The January 2013 Collector’s Series Sale 571 571 Roosevelt, Theodore and William Howard Taft Partly engraved Document Signed “Theodore Roosevelt” as President and “Wm. H. Taft” as Secretary of War, 1 page, folio, Washington, December 20, 1904. They appoint Robert Bailey Hewitt a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, effective from the preceding June 15. With blue War Department seal at lower left with a few point missing and secretary’s docket at upper left. Minor vellum toning and edge crumples throughout, otherwise Very Fine. Also includes Hewitt’s Kansas City, Missouri Grammar School Promotion certificate, 1895; his US Military Cadet Appointment, signed by “Elihu Root,” 1900; and lastly, a Temporary Major of Infantry appointment, dated February 1918, signed by the Assistant Secretary of War, B[enedict] Crowell. January 15-16, 2013 - New York, NY 572 572 Taft, William Howard Twenty-seventh President of the United States (1857-1930, served 1909-13); Chief Justice, U.S. Supreme Court (from 1921), the only ex-president to hold that position. Fine partly engraved Document Signed “Wm H Taft” as President, 1 page, folio, Washington, May 24, 1911. Also signed by Acting Secretary of War “Robert Shaw Oliver”. They appoint Robert B. Hewitt a First Lieutenant of Infantry effective the 11th day of March. With blue War Department seal and secretary’s docket at upper left. Seal has some missing pieces and damage. Yellow vellum age-toning at top, nibbling and pieces out at right and upper left, however, does not impede the signature or the vignette illustration at bottom. VG-Fine. A certification by John F. Crosby, County Clerk of Hudson County, New Jersey that “Conrad J. Dankoskey” was duly elected as the candidate to be voted for in the 1913 General Election. 1 page, legal folio, dated September 27, 1913 [original printed date of October 1911 has been crossed out], red embosed seal at lower right. Yellowing of paper, minor upper left corner fold, splits at right and left edge, otherwise Fine. An interesting glimpse at the Primary process at the turn of the 20th century. Est. 75-125 Page 91
