568
568 Roosevelt, Theodore and William Howard Taft Twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh Presidents of the
United States; Taft had been Roosevelt’s Secretary of War and his hand-picked successor, but the two
clashed over Taft’s methods and goals; both entered the 1912 presidential election, effectively splitting
the Republican vote and ensuring victory for Democrat Woodrow Wilson. Exceptional partly engraved
Document Signed “Theodore Roosevelt” as President and “Wm. H. Taft” as Secretary of War, 1 page,
folio, Washington, December 15, 1906. They appoint Ammon A. Augur Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry,
effective from the preceding July second. With blue War Department seal at lower left and secretary’s
docket at upper left. Minor crumpling at lower corners, otherwise VG. Both signatures are
uncommonly clean, large and bold, making this an exceptional example. (photo) Est. 600-800
