The January 2013 Collector’s Series Sale 563 563 Tyler, John (1790-1862) Tenth President of the United States, who succeeded to the office upon William Henry Harrison’s death in 1841. Attractive partly engraved Document Signed “John Tyler” as President and “A.P. Upshur” as Secretary of State, 1 page, folio, on vellum, [Washington], November 11, 1843, #54 issued in New Bedford, Massachusetts. A scallop-topped ship’s passport for the “Ship Corinthian of New Bedford John Minkley” master or commander of the burthen of “401 and 32/95” tons...mounted with “no” guns navigated with “thirty” men. Countersigned for the State of “Massachusetts” District of “New Bedord” and countersigned by customs collector, “Rodney French Collector.” Seal of the United States at lower left. Docketing on reverse “...October 6th 1847 George W. Armington having taken the oath required by law is at present master of the within vessel. [signed] “...James Truman” and “...June 3rd 1851 Ansel N. Stuart...[signed] Wm. T. Russell collector.” Overall: 13” x 15”. Framed in simple wooden frame under plexiglass, outer dimensions measure: 18” x 20 1/2”, with area cut out of mat board to display docketing on the reverse of document. Nineteenth President of the United States (1822-93, served 1877-81); his election was controversial, with Republican Hayes chosen over Democrat Samuel Tilden by a special commission to determine voting results from four disputed states; ended Reconstruction, alienating his own party. Partly engraved Document Signed “R.B. Hayes” as President, 1 page, folio, Washington, November 27, 1877. Also signed by Secretary of War “Geo. W. McCrary”. They appoint Ammon A Augur (1852-1908) a second lieutenant in the 24th Regiment of Infantry. With blue War Department seal. Recorded and signed in the Adjutant General’s Office, December 5, 1877. Piece out at bottom mid-left, light age-toning, otherwise VF. Also includes Cadet Appointment Certificate of the United States Military Academy, #431, July 1, 1873, for Ammon A. Augur. Signed and dated by Secretary of War Wm. Belknap on March 7, 1874. Also includes a mixed group of world currency, that may have been acquired during WWII: Belgium (2), France (5), Germany (10), Japan (20), Luxembourg (1), French and German MPCs (2), a Greek coin (1) and 2 others.
