561 Monroe, James (1758-1831) and John Quincy Adams (1716-1848) Fifth and Sixth Presidents of
the United States, respectively. Attractive partly engraved Document Signed “James Monroe” as President
and “John Quincy Adams”as Secretary of State, 1 page, folio, on vellum, [Washington], September
14, 1821, #16 issued in Baltimore, Maryland. A scallop-topped ship’s passport for the “Brig
William Henry of Boston John G. Paine” master or commander of the burthen of “one hundred ninetyfour”
tons...mounted with “no” guns navigated with “eight” men. Countersigned for the State of “Maryland”
District of “Baltimore” and countersigned by customs collector, “Jas. McCulloch Coll.” With
original and intact government wax-seal impressed Seal of the United States at lower left. Docketing on
reverse states “Brig William Henry 194 tons.” Overall: 11 1/2” x 15”. Several spots of staining on back
of document, which soaked through to front side, not affecting autographs; typical creases present, VF.
