560 Monroe, James (1758-1831) Fifth President of the United States. Attractive partly engraved Document<br />

Signed “James Monroe” as President and “Richard Rush”as acting Secretary of State, 1 page,<br />

folio, on vellum, [Washington], July 16, 1817, #26 issued in Charleston, South Carolina. A scalloptopped<br />

ship’s passport for the “Ship Amphion of Hartford, Levi Goodrich master or commander of the<br />

burthen of “three hundred and one 17/95” tons...mounted with “no” guns navigated with “thirteen<br />

men”. Countersigned for the State of “So. Carolina” District of “Charleston” and countersigned by customs<br />

collector, “Simon Theus Coll.” Seal of the United States at lower left. Docketing on reverse - July<br />

1, 1811, from the District and Port of Savannah (Georgia). It reads “...R. Halsey having taken the oath<br />

required by law — is at present master of the within named vessel in liew of Levi Goodrich late master<br />

[signed] Thomas F. Bond Dept. Coll.” Overall: 11 1/2” x 14 3/4”. Two minor areas of loss to text along<br />
