486 North American Land (PA) 1795. 2 shs. No.495.
Signed by Robert Morris, signer of the Declaration of
Independence. Known as the ‘financier of the American
Revolution;” founder of the Bank of North
America; one of the original US Senators from Pennsylvania;
risky land speculation destroyed his fortune,
and he died a pauper. Also signed by secretary “James
Marshall.” With the North American Land Company,
Morris and his partners hoped to multiply their fortunes
selling 4 million acres they had acquired cheaply. Settlers’
payments came in too slowly to cover taxes and
loans that came due, forcing Morris into bankruptcy
and debtor’s prison. A decent example, with just a trace
of ink erosion in the bold Morris signature. Uncanceled,
and very desirable as such. Some right edge
roughness and toning, otherwise VF+. (photo)
