Santa Anna (NY/Mexico), $500 7% US first mortgage<br />
bond, secured by “about three hundred and seventy<br />
eight square miles of land in the State of Vera<br />
Cruz...together with two palaces,” 1866, #1117,<br />
signed by A.L. de S.ta Anna, vignette of estate in<br />
Vera Cruz, each of the palaces at left with a portrait of<br />
Santa Anna, black with green underprint, red wax seal<br />
with Santa Anna’s monogram, and green embossed<br />
notary seal, corner margin folds, lower right, Good<br />
VF. Mexican general and politician Antonio Lopez de<br />
Santa Anna (1794-1876) had been the country’s president<br />
eleven times, most of them acting as its military<br />
dictator; his defeat at the Battle of San Jacinto led to<br />
Texan independence; later led Mexican forces in their<br />
doomed war against the United States; at the time of<br />
this bond, he was living in exile on Staten Island, and<br />
was trying to raise funds and troops for an assault on<br />
Mexican Emperor Maximilian; the plan never got off<br />
