With First Day of Issue envelope from Cooperstown,
June 12, 1939 with Centennial of Baseball stamp.
Alexander J. Cartwright (1820-1892) was the man
who invented modern baseball. Cartwright and the
members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club,
devised the rules and regulations for the modern game of
baseball. The first recorded baseball game was played in
1846 when Cartwright’s Knickerbockers lost to the New
York Baseball Club. The game was played at the Elysian
Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey. Cartwright later went to
the goldfields of California and later headed for
Hawaii, where he would eventually become a wealthy
merchant. He took his bats and balls with him and continued
to promote and play baseball wherever he went.
