580 [Whaling Manuscript]: Green, Capt. James - Journal of a whaling voyage for the bark “Nimrod” out
of Sag Harbor on July 4th, 1851 - New Bedford, CT - a log kept by the master of the vessel, James Green,
during the bark’s four year voyage to the South Atlantic, returned in August of 1853. Plain boards with
marbled paper intact but splitting from spine, 75 pages, some pages missing at beginning and end, half
torn pages, no whaling stamps or illustrations save one small sailing vessel {July 5, 1852}. Pencil markings
throughout and some pasted in verses and articles. Complete transcription accompanies lot as well
as contemporary tradespaper, Whalemen’s Shipping List, and Merchants’ Transcript,” New-Bedford, May
31, 1853, No.13, Vol. XI.
In terse commentary throughout this journal, Captain Green conveys to the reader all of the boredom and
tedium of a four-year long whaling voyage, punctuated by the aggravation of many missed opportunities to
capture “spurm” and right whales. In one passage Captain Green’s exasperation is only too clear as he writes
“....the West Boat went on to one Large 110 Bll (barrel) Whale and the Boatsteerer Mist (SIC) him. A First
Rate Chance Mist, Mist, Mist, Mist.” Captain Green probably would have added the word “Mist” a few
more times, but he was at the end of the ledger page! (photo) Est. 750-1,250
