It is <strong>the</strong>refore hardly surprising that <strong>the</strong> Bolsheviks received enough<br />

rifles and ammunition from <strong>the</strong> West to crush <strong>the</strong> Whites. The Western<br />

democracies paid no heed to <strong>the</strong> reports which related that <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong><br />

those killed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reds were common people, <strong>the</strong> poor, <strong>the</strong> workers, even<br />

pregnant women. This was confirmed <strong>by</strong> a 90-year-old exiled Estonian,<br />

Kustav Pohla, in 1978. He had witnessed those crimes in Russia himself.<br />

The Famine as a Weapon<br />

Lenin knew he could break <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whites <strong>by</strong> damaging <strong>the</strong><br />

peasants. The systematic confiscation <strong>of</strong> agricultural produce led to a<br />

terrible famine which, in turn, caused epidemics <strong>of</strong> typhus and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

severe illnesses. People began plundering. The situation was chaotic. The<br />

fact that <strong>the</strong> confiscated grain was sold abroad was concealed from <strong>the</strong><br />

public. In this way Lenin used <strong>the</strong> famine as a weapon against his enemies.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r reason for <strong>the</strong> famine was to establish <strong>the</strong> Bolshevik regime<br />

and to reduce <strong>the</strong> Russian population, according to Vladimir Soloukhin<br />

("In <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> Day", Moscow, 1992, p. 52). The situation deteriorated<br />

drastically. Therefore, <strong>the</strong> Bolsheviks had to stop confiscating grain in<br />
