Some Swedish journalists (including Staffan Skott) have, in accord with the prevailing myth, tried to explain that most of this wealth was handed over to the Communist parties in other countries, while millions of Russians died of starvation. That is not entirely accurate. According to the historian Igor Bunich, Lenin and Trotsky took care of this money personally. The gold, meanwhile, was smuggled out of Russia and deposited into personal bank accounts around the world. (30 tons of gold per year were produced in the Tsarist era in Russia.)
