The Cranbrook Chronicle Sports pages Unfortunately Trinity scored the couple of tries but the boys defended brilliantly on their line, the biggest and the smallest players all hitting the Trinity students hard. After the break Cranbrook let in another try and we were unable to convert the awesome pressure into points until the last few minutes when Peter Kaissis crossed the line. By Finn Parker 13C Lost 48 – 10 An early try to Jake Van Der Byl in answer to Trinity’s first points showed promise for the rest of the game. The game remained reasonably evenly matched with another Cranbrook try, this time to winger Ben Ritchie, in response to Trinity’s scoring efforts. Unfortunately despite the determined tackling by Anthony Stammel and Charlie Wood amongst others, Trinity were able to run away with the game in the later stages. 13D Lost 15 – 0 The 13Ds started strongly, keen to reverse their form from last week. They tackled strongly and were contenders in the game from the outset. Stephen Neophytou was dominant throughout, using his size and determination to give Cranbrook some advantage. Konrad Kluck made some strong runs but was unable to find space and Tom Beckhurst made some great tackles. The boys kept the opposition to just one try for most of the game and should be proud of the improvement they have made since last week. Tennis Round 4 1sts & 2nds Coming up against arguably the best team in the competition, it was never going to be an easy weekend. Unfortunately, it was the toughest encountered yet by the Cranbrook firsts and seconds. In the firsts, no set was won. However, this is not a reflection of the effort that the boys put into every point they played. The standout player came in the seconds through Jack Mowbray. He was the only victorious player in the team and easily won his singles 6-2. Unfortunately the same can’t be said about the doubles, as Jack and Alex Lowe came close in the first set, losing it 7-5, but losing the second, 6-2. It is only very early in the season and so, Cranbrook tennis still has a long time to grow 30 its skill. As long as the boys have tried their hardest and continue to do so, there is nothing to worry about, because the wins will come themselves. Nathan Chalik, 1sts A1 & Captain Yr11C 3rds & 4ths Round 4 of the winter tennis season was met with fierce competition on both sides. Having travelled out to Trinity for the matches, the 4ths ended up winning tightly 27-21, while in an astonishing turn of events the 3rds achieved a draw 29-29, a rare feat in tennis. Doubles results were strong across the board, with all partnerships managing to secure a win. The singles, however, were far more varied; one outright victory 6-1 courtesy of Max Busch whilst Oscar Howard narrowly went down in a tiebreaker 7-4, with the end result of the match leading to final score of 29 games all. The 4ths’ win was headed by Sam Adler and Monty McPherson, winning 6-3 in their doubles as well as obtaining vitally needed games in their singles. On the other side, Luke Ditchfield and myself were lucky enough to win all matches, singles and doubles, with Luke taking out the prestigious 6-0 singles game. Strong doubles victories brought the 4ths to an overall win. Lewin Cary 10A/B Cranbrook 10s have played Trinity before many times and they have always proved to be a tough opposition and, once again, they displayed this ability this weekend. Beginning with some tough doubles, the 10As faced a tough opposition, and fought hard for each and every point. However, we saw Matt Chard and Sam Atkinson prevail and with a devastating game from Sam, leaving his opponent with a dismal 6-0, and with Matt Chard playing his consistent and powerful groundstrokes to wear his opponent away into dust with a 7-5 win. On the other hand, the 10Bs started with powerful doubles games, cleaning away their opponents, however sadly they were beaten back in the singles but for Darren Choi’s quick and clean game ending on a 6-3. And while this weekend was not encouraging, it is simply a sign that we need to observe some of our teammates and follow the example set by them. 10C This weekend was another great set of games for the 10Cs at Dangar against Trinity. Our match play showed how we’ve been improving throughout the start of the season despite our limited number of matches. Laurence Nettleton and Ben Yang’s doubles went quite well, even though they didn’t win as their final score was 5-7 after a long battle. Laurence Nettleton unfortunately lost with a score of 0-6, not that it wasn’t an exciting set to watch. Ben Yang came out with 1-6, but his serves have improved tremendously with a greater accuracy. The C2 Trinity player didn’t turn up at first, so Jack Rex started with his singles with an unfortunate score of 0-6, he had great technique but the Trinity player just hit every ball back! Once the C2 player turned up Christopher Cunio was able to complete his singles with a score of 2-6, and finally the doubles of C1 and C2 (Jack Rex and Christopher Cunio) finished with a loss of 1-6. Our overall score was 9-37, despite the losses, the team overall showed an improvement in technique and were definitely enthusiastic. Many of the matches involved deuces so they were actually closer than you think. We look forward for another great set of matches next week! Christopher Cunio 9A Coming up against an undefeated side, we knew round 4 against Trinity would test us. On wet courts and with the sun reflecting off the water, we fought hard but unfortunately went down 1 set to 5, 19 games to 35. Alex Gall and Eddie Lewis fought very hard in their doubles but unluckily went down 4-6. Braden Liu and Daniel Siu dug deep but also lost 4-6. Alex was up against a very strong opponent and lost 0-6. Eddie had a very close match with many crowd pleasers but unluckily lost 4-6. Braden Liu was troubled by his opponent’s calls, yet fought hard and lost 2-6. Daniel Siu also fought very hard against a consistent hitter, and out skilled him to win 7-5. 9B The 9Bs unfortunately went down 0 sets to 6. Tom Riepler had a tough match but unluckily went down 4-6. Josh and Jasper also unfortunately went down. Their Trinity opponents were strong. The team has learned a lot from the experience. Thanks to Mr Knight for managing and supporting us. Eddie Lewis Captain 9AB 8A/B A super performance for Cranbrook School on the weekend against Trinity. Starting off with the As, Ricky Gonzalez and I faced a tough doubles side. Ricky gave everything he got but we just came up short with a tough loss 5-7.

Thursday, 30 May 2013 | Term 2, Week 5 Sports pages Daniel Walters and Jasper Hudson teamed up to face an opposing Trinity doubles squad. Tough match but a hard, 4-6 unlucky loss. In the singles Daniel had a superb win 6-2 but a tough loss for jasper 4-6. Ricky played outstanding the whole day but another unlucky loss 5-7. Due to time constraints though I was unable to finish my match 4-5. For the Bs Sam Folden and Sasch Mayo faced a strong Trinity doubles team losing 1-6. Louis Shapiro and Thomas Goodman gave their all but another tough loss going down 2-6.Sam Folden was a beast on the court on Saturday with an outstanding 6-2 win. Sasch Mayo played a strong game but his opponent was just too strong winning 1-6. Louis and Thomas each went down 3-6 but both did their best. Overall not Cranbrook’s best match yet but as always Cranbrook always performs their best. Tex Smouha-Ho, Captain Year 8 8C The 8Cs played Trinity on Saturday. In the doubles Charlie Macdonald and Emmanuel had a 1-6 loss and Charlie Pizzy and David Loewy had a close 4-6 loss. In the singles David, Charlie and Emmanuel unfortunately had 0-6, 2-6 and 0-6 losses but Charlie Macdonald won his match with an impressive 6-0 victory. 7A The 4th round of winter tennis at Trinity Grammar School was played in sunny autumn conditions despite the torrential rain all evening before. The 7As were very pleased with their 6-love in sets and 36-6 in games domination of Trinity, traditionally a very strong CAS tennis school. In the first match first doubles pair Jay Gerrish and Graham Heller quickly adapted to the synthetic courts, worked well as a team and completely devastated Trinity’s A1 and A2 for an amazing 6-love result. Maxwell Liu (A3) and James Drielsma (A4) communicated well, amused each other between points, but concentrated particularly on big-points to outplay Trinity’s second pair for a great 6-2 win. Jay kicked off the singles and both outplayed and overpowered this opponent for a strong 6-1 win. In the second singles, Graham constantly manoeuvred the ball making his opponent run before crushing him for a cool 6-love win. Next up, Maxwell pressured his opponent constantly by taking the ball early to break his opponent’s serves for a tidy 6-2 win. In the final A singles, James dominated Trinity with his top spin forehand and pulled off numerous clean winners for a great 6-1 finish. Team name 7B Bs also had a great 5 sets to 1 win, but much closer in terms of games 36-25. Kicking off the day, first pair Emeil Aroney (B1) and Max Kanuk (B2) won a closely fought match 6-4. Emeil and Max’s strong communication and mental attitude gave them the edge they needed to win. Second pair Lucas Berger (B3) and Jackson Rogers (B4) also had a great close-match 6-4 doubles win. Lucas and Jackson’s quick adaption to Trinity’s home synthetic courts gave them the edge for this hard fought handy win. Emeil and Trinity B1 in the singles pushed each other neck and neck to 5-all, before Emeil successfully shifted up a gear and closed-out his opponent 7-5. Max also successfully won in a long and closely fought 6-4 match (with everyone watching) by putting pressure on his opponent with his unrelenting determination. Trinity’s B3 had no answer to Lucas’ scorching return of serves and was outclassed in a decisive 6-1 Cranbrook win, giving Lucas the Bs best result of the day! Jackson capped off the final B singles of the day. Unfortunately, Jackson narrowly lost 5-7; unlucky, as it could have gone either way. Maxwell Liu, Captain Yr7 7C Sets for Sets against The C team started with a tough start with the doubles matches. First pair Sam Lane and Dylan Arya played hard but unfortunately lost 1-6. Second pair up was Tom Lorang and Tristan Lien putting some pressure on the Trinity boys and winning 6-4. Sam opened up the singles campaign with a tight match 4-6 against Trinity’s C1, Sam, as always, gave it his best. Dylan was up next and lost 2-6, he Games f or put in his best effort and had a great attitude. Tom Lorang was successful in his match, 6-2. Tristan was up next and played a great game but he couldn’t finish the match ending with a tie 4-4. Overall, the end result was Trinity won 3 ½ sets to 2 ½ sets in games 23-28. 7D Games against Comments win/loss 1sts 0 8 9 48 Loss 2nds 1 7 24 45 Loss 3rds 3 3 29 29 Draw 4ths 4 2 27 21 Win 10As 2 4 38 30 Loss 10Bs 3 3 21 27 Loss 10Cs 0 6 9 37 Loss 9As 1 5 19 35 Loss 9Bs 0 6 6 36 Loss 8As 1 5 29 33 Loss 8Bs 1 5 16 32 Loss 8Cs 1 5 13 30 Loss 7As 6 0 36 6 Win 7Bs 5 1 36 25 Win 7Cs 2 ½ 3 ½ 23 28 Loss 7Ds 0 6 16 37 Loss Disappointment lay ahead for the D team.
