curative medicine to<br />

significantly reduce<br />

morbidity and<br />

mortality rates in<br />

recent years has led<br />

to an increasing<br />

emphasis on<br />

preventative measures.<br />

The Graduate Certificate<br />

course is equivalent to<br />

the first semester of the<br />

Postgraduate Diploma<br />

in Public <strong>Health</strong> and the<br />

Master of Public <strong>Health</strong><br />

degrees.<br />

Introduction<br />

This is a multidisciplinary course designed to<br />

provide specialist training in an area of public<br />

health for graduate students. Students who<br />

complete the Graduate Certificate may apply<br />

for entry into either the Postgraduate Diploma in<br />

Public <strong>Health</strong> or the Master of Public <strong>Health</strong> and<br />

receive RPL towards course competency.<br />

Course Entry Requirements<br />

Applicants usually require the equivalent of a<br />

bachelor degree or advanced diploma but, in<br />

certain cases, relevant work experience may be<br />

recognised.<br />

Specific Requirements<br />

Applicants for this course should refer to the<br />

Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record<br />

Screening and Clearance Section of the online<br />

handbook.<br />

Recognition of Prior<br />

Learning (RPL)<br />

Applications for recognition of prior learning are<br />

assessed on an individual basis.<br />

Duration and Availability<br />

This fee-paying course available in both internal<br />

and external study modes is of one semester<br />

full-time or equivalent part-time study. Where<br />

possible, classes will be scheduled in the evening<br />

to accommodate students already employed.<br />

This course is also available to international<br />

offshore students. International onshore students<br />

on student visas are not permitted to study this<br />

course externally. The following majors ae not<br />

available to international onshore students on<br />

student visas as they are only available part-time;<br />

Applied Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Children’s<br />

Environmental <strong>Health</strong>, <strong>Health</strong> Informatics, <strong>Health</strong><br />

Promotion and Sexology. The sexology major is<br />

not available by external/distance study.<br />

Course Organisation<br />

Students complete common core units in<br />

combination with electives. Part-time students<br />

should discuss their study plan with the course<br />

coordinator. Students wanting to enrol in other<br />

units related to their major that are available in<br />

other areas within <strong>Curtin</strong>, cross institutionally<br />

or internationally should discuss this with their<br />

course coordinator (this may have an impact on<br />

the total course fees). Students should check for<br />

availability of units in the online handbook as they<br />

may change.<br />

Additional Course Expenses<br />

Students may be expected to purchase a<br />

number of textbooks, readers and other essential<br />

study materials.<br />

International Students<br />

International Students studying in<br />

Australia on a student visa can only<br />

study full-time and there are also<br />

specific entry requirements that must be<br />

met. Please refer to international.curtin.<br />
