ORPHEUM THEATRE
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA
D
o you hear the people sing? You will today, as our
special guest at the Orpheum for the 25 th anniversary
production of Les Misérables, the world’s longest
running musical, with its timeless themes of grace, love and
sacrifice. This powerful epic, winner of eight 1987 Tony Awards
including Best Musical, keeps drawing people back. It was called
“an unquestionably spectacular production from start to
finish” by the New York Times and has been seen by nearly 60
million people worldwide in 42 countries and translated into 21
languages.
Since an extremely successful run at the Orpheum in December
2011 and the 2012 release of a lauded feature film starring Hugh
Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, I’ve been asked
frequently about its return. On behalf of Hennepin Theatre
Trust, I am delighted to welcome this enduring musical back. You are some of the lucky few
to get the chance to see this show before before it re-opens on Broadway next spring!
In addition to bringing some of Broadway’s hottest shows to the Twin Cities, the Trust is also
encouraging a diverse group of young patrons to explore their potential through our
education and community engagement programs. Our Critical Review student reviewer
program gives metro area high school students the opportunity to attend Broadway
productions and write reviews to be posted on the Trust’s website and in community
newspapers like the Twin Cities Daily Planet. After seeing War Horse recently, Madeline
Bertch wrote, “It was unlike anything I’d ever seen before. Five Tony Awards form quite a
resume but War Horse speaks for itself.”
As part of the program, students receive the same professional press materials that are
distributed to the Twin Cities media, attend Broadway Confidential talks for background on
the shows and are offered behind-the-scenes historical theatre tours. They also participate in
workshops with local theatre professionals such as Jeffrey Hatcher, an award-winning
Broadway and Off-Broadway playwright and screenwriter, and Star Tribune theatre critic
Graydon Royce.
We extend a special thanks to long time Trust Donors Fred and Ann Moore for their ongoing
financial support of Critical Review. Any metro area high school student is eligible to apply
for this free program. Registration for the 2013-14 school year will begin in early September.
To read student reviews or learn more about how you can help ensure that these experiences
remain available for Twin Cities high school students, please visit our website at
www.hennepintheatretrust.org.
Thank you for being here to “dream the dream” with one of the greatest productions ever
created. Enjoy the show!
Yours truly,
Thomas L. Hoch
SYNOPSIS
ACT ONE
PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNE
After 19 years on the chain gang, Jean Valjean
finds that the ticket-of-leave he must display condemns
him to be an outcast. Only the Bishop of
Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered
by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some
silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by the
police and is astonished when the Bishop lies to
the police to save him. Valjean decides to start his
life anew.
1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MER
Eight years have passed and Valjean, having broken
his parole and changed his name to Monsieur
Madeleine, has become a factory owner and
Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret
illegitimate child. When the other women discover
this, they demand her dismissal.
Desperate for money to pay for medicines for
her daughter, Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and
then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly
degraded, she gets into a fight with a prospective
customer and is about to be taken to prison by
Javert when the ‘Mayor’ arrives and demands she
be taken to the hospital instead.
The Mayor then rescues a man pinned beneath
a cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength
of convict 24601 Jean Valjean, who, he says, has
just been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent
man go to prison, confesses that he is prisoner
24601. At the hospital, Valjean promises the
dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter
Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean
escapes.
1823, MONTFERMEIL
Cosette has been lodged with the Thénardiers,
who horribly abuse her while indulging their own
daughter, Éponine. Valjean pays the Thénardiers
to let him take her away to Paris.
1832, PARIS
Nine years later, there is unrest in the city because
of the likely demise of the popular leader General
Lamarque, the only man left in the government
who shows any feeling for the poor. A street gang
led by Thénardier and his wife sets upon Jean Valjean
and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who
does not recognise Valjean until he has gone.
The Thénardiers’ daughter Éponine, who is secretly
in love with the student Marius, reluctantly
agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he
has fallen in love.
News of General Lamarque’s death circulates
in the city and a group of politically-minded students
stream out into the streets to whip up support
for a revolution.
Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius,
with whom she has fallen in love. Éponine brings
Marius to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by
her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean,
convinced it was Javert lurking outside his house,
tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country.
ACT TWO
The students prepare to build the barricade. Marius,
noticing that Éponine has joined the insurrection,
sends her away with a letter to Cosette,
which is intercepted by Valjean. Éponine decides
to rejoin her love at the barricade.
The barricade is built and the revolutionaries
defy an army warning to give up or die. Javert is
exposed as a police spy. In trying to return to the
barricade, Éponine is killed.
Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of
Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but
instead lets him go. The students settle down for
a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the
night, Valjean prays to God to save Marius. The
next day the rebels are all killed.
Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious
Marius. After meeting Thénardier, who
is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he comes
across Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver
the young man to the hospital. Javert lets Valjean
go and, his unbending principles of justice
having been shattered by Valjean’s own mercy, he
kills himself.
Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, Marius
recovers in Cosette’s care. Valjean confesses the
truth of his past to Marius and insists he must go
away.
At Marius and Cosette’s wedding, the Thénardiers
try to blackmail Marius. Thénardier says
Cosette’s ‘father’ is a murderer and as proof produces
a ring which he stole from the corpse the
night the barricade fell. It is Marius’s own ring
and he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him
that night. He and Cosette go to Valjean where
Cosette learns for the first time of her own history
before the old man dies.
THE STATE, ORPHEUM & PANTAGES THEATRES
The following information is provided to help you familiarize yourself with our facilities and services. Our goal is to provide you with personalized service to ensure
that your theatre experience exceeds your expectations. In order to serve you most effectively, please do not hesitate to address questions, comments, or requests
for specific assistance to any of the ushering staff.
CAMERAS • The use of cameras or other types of recording equipment
is strictly prohibited.
CANCELLATIONS • For one night events, please check the event description
for postponements or cancellations.
CELLULAR PHONES AND PAGERS • The ringing of cellular phones
or pagers can be highly disruptive during a performance. These devices
should be turned off or turned to vibrate mode while at the theatre. If necessary,
a cellular phone or pager can be monitored by the Event Manager.
CHILDREN • Children under the age of six are encouraged to attend
the theatres only for special children’s events. Everyone entering the theatre
must have a ticket. For the comfort and enjoyment of all guests, children
who are disruptive to other guests will be asked to leave the seating
area. Infants will not be allowed admission to Broadway performances.
DONOR PROGRAM • Hennepin Theatre Trust Donors experience special
benefits and have access to exclusive events while also supporting
the Trust’s education programming and the preservation of the State, Orpheum
and Pantages Theatres. Visit our website to learn more about becoming
a Donor.
DRESS CODE • While our theatres have no specific dress code, we
find that many of our patrons like to dress up to celebrate attending
a special event. The most important thing is to dress appropriately for
a special occasion.
EDUCATION • Hennepin Theatre Trust’s education department strives to
engage audiences of all ages through a variety of educational and outreach
programs. Visit our website to learn more.
EMERGENCIES • The telephone number for emergency messages is:
(612) 339-7007, ext 450. Emergency messages are delivered immediately
during performances when seat locations are known. Persons expecting
emergency messages are asked to leave their seat locations in
advance with the calling party and with the Box Office upon arrival.
EXCHANGES • Tickets may be exchanged to another performance of
the same show in person at the box office at least 24 hours prior to the
currently scheduled performance. Exchanges are subject to availability,
and are assessed a $5.00 per ticket exchange fee. If the patron exchanges
into a more expensive performance, they must pay the difference
in ticket price. There is no refund for exchanging into a less
expensive performance. There are NO exchanges on Group Sales or
Comp tickets.
FIRST AID • First aid supplies are available at all theatres. Ask any
usher for assistance. There is a security officer trained in CPR and First
Aid on duty at every performance from the time the lobbies open until
all guests have exited.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES • A variety of beverages including wine,
beer and soft drinks and light snacks including mints and cookies are
available for purchase in the theatre. No outside food or beverages are
allowed in the theatre.
HENNEPIN THEATRE TRUST • Hennepin Theatre Trust, non-profit
owner of the historic Orpheum, State, Pantages and the newly developed
New Century Theatres, is dedicated to enriching the vibrant cultural atmosphere
of the Twin Cities. We present a rich array of live performances,
create inspiring arts education experiences and advance a thriving cultural
destination in downtown Minneapolis. Our programs include Broadway
touring productions, the Broadway Confidential series, our SpotLight
Musical Theatre Program for high schools, the Critical View student reviewer
program, our free ticket Access Program and Kids’ Night and
leading the planning for the cultural corridor that will extend from the
Walker Art Center to the Mississippi Riverfront.
LOBBIES • Lobbies are open to the public approximately one hour prior to
showtime. Theatre seating traditionally begins 30 minutes prior to showtime.
LOST AND FOUND • Please notify any usher immediately upon discovery
of lost or found articles. After a performance, you may call the
Box Office at 612. 339.7007.
RE-ENTRY INTO THE THEATRE • Please see an usher if you would
like to exit and re-enter the theatre.
RESTROOM LOCATIONS • Restrooms are located inside the ticketed area
of each theatre, please see an usher for direction to the nearest restroom.
SEASON TICKETS • Season Tickets and flexible Pick Your Package
options are available for Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Broadway series. Visit
our website to learn more.
SECONDARY TICKET MARKET • Consumer Warning - the State,
Orpheum and Pantages Theatres use bar code scanning for ticket admissions.
As a result, patrons should be careful when purchasing tickets
and should make sure the seller is a State, Orpheum or Pantages Theatre
licensed contractor, otherwise, you may be purchasing a ticket that
is invalid and will be denied admission.
Ticketmaster is the ONLY authorized ticketing agent outside of the State Theatre
Box Office. If you purchase tickets from an unauthorized agent in the
secondary market (Scalper, Ticket Broker, eBay, Craigslist, etc.), you risk
purchasing counterfeit or invalid tickets. If you wish to purchase tickets from
the secondary market, we encourage the use of TicketExchange.
TicketExchange is Ticketmaster’s online service that enables premium
and fan-to-fan transactions. Only Ticketmaster can guarantee
100% legitimate secondary market tickets, because the tickets sold
through TicketExchange are linked to Ticketmaster’s barcoded ticketing
systems. Visit our website for more information on TicketExchange.
SEATING • Guests arriving after the start of the performance will be
seated at the discretion of management, in accordance to the wishes of
the performing company. These times vary with each production. Please
plan to allow plenty of time for parking.
SMOKING • The State, Orpheum & Pantages Theatres & their lobbies
are entirely smoke-free.
TICKETS • Tickets can be purchased in person at the State Theatre Box
Office, by phone through the Ticketmaster Artsline, online through Ticketmaster.com
or through Ticketmaster outlets.
is easy! Our standard group minimum is 15 people, but may vary with scheduled. Visit our website for the show you are scheduled to attend or
each performance.
