from Bergamo, Milan, and Cremona.' The most important <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m all, so<br />

far as we can judge, must have been Enrico da Milano,^ son <strong>of</strong> a painter<br />

Jacobino, who, in <strong>the</strong> Deliberations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Special Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Brescia</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

March 4, 1449, is spoken <strong>of</strong> as having been long resident in <strong>the</strong> city where he<br />

diligently practised <strong>his</strong> art,' and is fur<strong>the</strong>r described as one <strong>of</strong> good repute<br />

and character and well skilled in <strong>the</strong> art <strong>of</strong> painting/ Here, <strong>the</strong>n, we have<br />

evidence <strong>of</strong> an artist <strong>of</strong> some standing, capable, it is to be assumed, <strong>of</strong><br />

training o<strong>the</strong>rs, though no works <strong>of</strong> <strong>his</strong> have been preserved to testify to <strong>his</strong><br />

merits/ In <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong> <strong>of</strong> Jacopo and Enrico da Milano it is possible that <strong>the</strong><br />

Among early frescoes at <strong>Brescia</strong> <strong>the</strong> authors <strong>of</strong> which still await identification, may<br />

be mentioned <strong>the</strong> Descent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Ghost and Coronation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Virgin over <strong>the</strong> first<br />

altar on <strong>the</strong> right in <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carmine, and <strong>the</strong> frescoes in a small chapel on <strong>the</strong><br />

north side <strong>of</strong> S. Giovanni Evangelista, which are now in process <strong>of</strong> being recovered<br />

from whitewash.
