Having satisfied <strong>the</strong> authorities at Savona by furnishing <strong>the</strong> altarpiece for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir ca<strong>the</strong>dral, <strong>Foppa</strong> was now at liberty to enter upon <strong>his</strong> duties at <strong>Brescia</strong>.<br />

It will be remembered that before leaving that city for Pavia in <strong>the</strong> autumn<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1489 <strong>the</strong> painter had approached two members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Brescia</strong>n Council on<br />

<strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>his</strong> repatriation ; all <strong>the</strong> details relating to t<strong>his</strong> are contained<br />

in two important documents, Nos. 52 and 55. The wording <strong>of</strong> No. 52<br />

plainly shows that at t<strong>his</strong> date <strong>Foppa</strong> was highly esteemed in <strong>his</strong> old home,<br />

and that <strong>the</strong>se two distinguished <strong>Brescia</strong>n citizens, Giov. Crist<strong>of</strong>oro da Cazzago<br />

and Emanuele Lana, who in <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>of</strong>ficial capacity are continually mentioned<br />

in <strong>the</strong> municipal archives, were eager to serve him.<br />

On December 18, 1489, <strong>the</strong>y presented at <strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Special<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> governing body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city "<strong>the</strong> well-worded petition" <strong>of</strong><br />

" Master <strong>Vincenzo</strong>, <strong>the</strong> excellent painter, our fellow-citizen," adding on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own account an eloquent statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great master's wishes, and recommending<br />

him in <strong>the</strong> warmest terms with <strong>the</strong> view <strong>of</strong> obtaining a favourable<br />

answer in <strong>the</strong> Council to <strong>his</strong> appeal. <strong>Foppa</strong>'s chief desire was now, after an<br />
