PREFACE
In the course of the production of this book we have received much help and
kindness from a great number of persons, all of whom it would be impossible
to mention by name. We desire, however, especially to record our gratitude
to the following : and first to Dr. Gustavo Frizzoni of Milan, for never failing
help and valuable advice during many years and for informing us of the
existence of several works by Foppa which might otherwise have escaped our
notice ; and to Cav. Pietro Da Ponte of Brescia, for much assistance and
kindness, and especially for directing our attention to the Archives of S. Alessandro
and for obtaining for us permission to study there as well as in
