Principal’s Message
We recently finalised our evaluation of
2011 Year 12 students’ final scores and
their post school study/destinations. The
evaluation is finalised this time of year
because several of our students enter
northern hemisphere universities which
commence their academic year in August/
September.
I am pleased to inform our school community that all of
our graduating students from 2011 have secured a place in
further education in the field of their choice in the country
of their choice. Our graduating students are currently
studying degrees in Law, Political Science, Aerospace, Adult
Health Services, Psychology, Business, Zoology, Science,
Animal Management, International Business, International
Relations, Fine Arts, Occupational Health and Safety,
Computer Sciences, Engineering, Theology, Accounting/
Finance and Hospitality Management. Countries where
students are studying include Australia, Malaysia, England,
Holland, USA, Japan and New Zealand.
We are proud of all of our 2011 graduating students who
have followed their passion for learning and vocational
interests into their further study pathways. AISM offers
a holistic, rigorous and well supported pathway to higher
education in any field of study anywhere in the world.
communication. There is more information on this in
page 11 of this newsletter.
Last year, we embarked on a video project called Alana’s
Journey, a story of Alana Miller-Foote, a student of
AISM for ten years who now is studying at Melbourne
University. Alana’s Journey speaks of her experience in
the early days of the school when it was housed in a
bungalow in Country Heights, Kajang to what AISM is
today. In developing the video, we received the support
of AISM parent, Richard Langridge who helped direct
the video. We also thank Alana for her effort in this
video and members of the staff who have contributed
towards this project, namely Mr Ian Martineau and Mr
Jon Suffolk.
The video is being screened within the school on our
LCD screens. We are in the process of finalizing the
permissions we require from parents of students shown
in the video before we launch it to external audiences.
I wish all departing students and families the best for
the future. Keep in touch, as you all are an important
part of our school history and our memories of you will
stay with us forever.
David Kilpatrick, Principal
Our current Year 12 students are on the final stages of
preparing for their external examinations. Our school
internal marks have been submitted to the Board of Studies.
If Mr Martineau and his senior school teaching team’s
predictions are correct (and they usually are) we should
see a significant amount of students well in the 90’s this
year. We are building a strong track record for getting the
best out of our senior students and ensuring they achieve
entry into their post-school study choices. Last year more
than 50% of our students received an university entrance
score above the 70th percentile, out performing 70% of
students across Australia and candidates from around
the world sitting the Australian qualification. We also saw
several scores in the high 80s and 90s. Our students are
a talented group who manage to mix rigorous academic
effort with involvement in sporting, cultural and leadership
activities in their senior years.
We wish the current year 12s a peaceful but productive
vacation from their usual routines, as they prepare for their
forthcoming external examinations.
I was pleased to hear that our teachers’ team won the
Parents Association Trivia Quiz Night. It was a fun night,
extremely well organized.
The Parents Association has offered their support to the
school as we continue to look for ways to improve parent
Mr B’s Careers Corner
Visit from University of Melbourne &
Queensland
We had a number of very interesting visits
recently from a number of Universities. In Week
9, representatives visited us from the University of
Melbourne and the University of Queensland. It was
fantastic to have two ‘Group of Eight’ universities
visit us at the same time and there was an
enthusiastic response from our students with over
thirty students attending, and it was great to see
a number of parents present too. Initially, I was
nervous about organising an after school event, but
it was great to see such a positive response from
our community.
Visit from Creighton University, Nebraska
On Tuesday this week, we had a representative
visit us from Creighton University. Creighton is
a Catholic institution in Nebraska that has more
than 7,000 students of diverse faiths and races
from across the United States and 41 countries.
They offer courses in arts, business, medicine and
sciences. The representative was very impressed
with our students and enjoyed his visit. At AISM,
we are always keen to welcome representatives
from universities outside of Australia, so that our
students have a more complete picture of what their
options are when they graduate from us at the end
of Year 12.
University of Wollongong Selective Entry
Program
Speaking of graduation, a number of our Year 12
students were interviewed on Wednesday this
week by representatives from the University
of Wollongong (UOW) as part of their Selective
Entry program. The UOW Selective Entry program
rewards students who have performed well in their
final two years of pre-university study by granting
them an offer to study at UOW before they sit their
final exams. Successful Selective Entry applicants
receive a guaranteed unconditional offer to study at
UOW in 2013; however, they must still successfully
complete their final exams. It’s a great initiative, and
may provide piece of mind to some of our nervous
Year 12 students!
I wish you all a peaceful and relaxing holiday.
Congratulations to all those students who participated
in the swimming carnival, I was impressed by those
students that repeatedly showed up all day in many
races. Also to those students who participated in the
music showcase, congratulations on your outstanding
achievement in being selected to perform. To those
middle students who auditioned but were not
selected, I congratulate you on having a go. I wish all
families a safe and restful holiday and I look forward
to welcoming many new families to the middle school
for fourth term. To students who are leaving us at the
end of third term, I wish you all the best for the future
Book Week 2012 “Champions
Read”
As part of AISM Book Week
celebrations, students created
some impressive book cover
images on their Homeroom doors.
These cover images included
popular books such as The Twits,
The Hunger Games and The Very
Hungry Caterpillar.
Hip Hop Dancer, Sabrina Saw visits
AISM Middle School
Last Friday, Sabrina Saw ran some
dance classes with students from
our Middle School. The classes were
put through a test of fitness using
flexibility, coordination and rhythm
through a combination of ‘Hip Hop’
and ‘House’. This celebration of
dance was used as a finale to our
dance and gymnastics topic which
students have been involved in
throughout the Middle School.
Sabrina is one of Malaysia’s best hip-hop dancers and
she has worked with some amazing artists like Chris
Brown and even James Brown! Sabrina is presently
working on a charity project called The Pet Project
Malaysia, in which we hope some of our students will
get involved in. For more information check out her
Vising Authors Term 4
We are very fortunate to have both Ian Billings from the
UK and Coral Tulloch from Australia visit us in the first 2
weeks of next term. Please find Ian Billings book order
attached to this Newsletter.
Overdue Library Resources
Unfortunately many students have not returned their
books on time. Also some textbooks from 2011 are still
overdue and we have sent a letter home to parents to ask
that these books are found and returned to the Library.
Year 11 students should note that as they finish their
exams their Year 11 textbooks need to be returned. Year
12 textbooks will then be issued as students return their
Year 11 books.
Book Donations
Gabriel & Macauley Robertson have kindly donated a wide
selection of popular books including some by authors
Roald Dahl and C.S. Lewis.
Junior School News
Next term from Week 2 we will be commencing our
swim programme for Junior School. The lessons
will be on Mondays and Wednesdays for five weeks
and will conclude in Week 6 with our Annual Junior
School Swimming Carnival. To ensure that the swim
programme is of a high standard, a member of the
Junior School staff will be travelling to Australia during
the holiday break to become an accredited Austswim
instructor and coach of competitive strokes. We are
an Australian school and as such we believe that
all children should have a quality Learn to Swim
programme in their early years. All classes will have
swimming lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays and
class teachers will inform you of your child’s specific
lesson time.
Recently we have been spending a significant amount
of time working to ensure our teaching and learning
programmes are differentiated to ensure all students
are gaining the most out of their education here at
AISM. Differentiation is essentially adapting teaching
practices so that all students are participating in
challenging, meaningful and engaging learning
activities. If you have any questions about how
your class teacher is differentiating their classroom
instruction please feel free to have a chat with them
about it.
Roald Dahl Day 2012
On Thursday, 13th September
2012 , a number of Junior
School classes participated
in various Roald Dahl Day
activities.
These activities included
activities such as creating
new book covers for existing
Roald Dahl books, a jumbo
Roald Dahl Day quiz, a Wonka
wisdom challenge and much
more.
It was a great day to learn more about such a well
known and talented author.
Year 2 - Enjoyed watching Matilda as well as an inclass
dress up party!
Year 4 - Enjoyed some English rotation activities
including, creating new book covers for existing Roald
Dahl books; a jumbo Roald Dahl Day quiz and they
also watched the all time favourite ‘Matilda’.
Harriet Fearon
I know I make mention of this at the end of every
term, but it is very important to maintain some form
of reading programme during the holidays. Even if
it is just a little bed time reading, this is enough to
maintain the gains the children have made during the
previous term.
As always in an International School we have some
families leaving us at the end of term. It is always sad
saying goodbye, especially to those families who have
been with us for quite a few years. We wish you all the
best and encourage you to keep in touch.
Visit to “Farm in the City”, Seri Kembangan
Kindergarten Excursion
Last Wednesday P/KG and P/KW visited a place called the “Farm in the City“
at Seri Kembangan. The bus ride was exciting as it was a first for many
students. We had an interactive farm experience patting deers, goats and
horses; feeding fishes, tortoises and cows; holding rabbits and guinea pigs.
The bird show was funny with a parrot playing dead and an environmentally
friendly racoon putting litter in the bin. We had a wonderful day!
Performing Arts News
Congratulations
The end of the term always gives us the opportunity to reflect on the work achieved by staff
and students during what has been a very busy and exciting term. Music Showcase, Junior
School Production, International Day Assembly, HSC Drama Examinations and Showcase,
and class performances at assemblies have been the major highlights. It is the dedication
of the teaching staff and, this term, the massive contributions by our Junior School parents
that have made all of these events so successful. Congratulations to everyone involved
but particularly to Mrs. Bal-Short and Mr. McCormick for continuing to design and deliver
outstanding Performing Arts opportunities for our students.
“Broadway or Bust” – Music Theatre Workshop
AISM will host a two day intensive Music Theatre workshop with American presenter Mr.
Michael Parks Masterson on Friday, 19th and Saturday, 20th October in our theatre. Mr.
Masterson has had over 30 years experience on the stage in the USA, Europe, North Africa
and Asia. He is a highly acclaimed presenter and performer. There are only 25 places available.
Please have a look at the advertisement in this issue of the newsletter. Students interested in
attending must see Mr. Suffolk for an application form. To participate you must be willing to
sing, dance and act. For more information please contact me via email, jonsuffolk@aism.
From the Music Room
Music Showcase Concert
Congratulations to all the students who performed at last Thursday’s Music Showcase Concert. The audience
was impressed with the variety and quality of the performances from Junior, Middle and Senior school students.
Thanks also to staff who helped out on the night in the organization and the preparation for musical events.
Instrumental Music Academy
Please note that there are many overdue payments for lessons this term. We have sent out two invoices
via email to date. The first invoice was sent in week 3, and the second in week 7. We would like to urge parents
to pay the instrumental fees on time.
Please find the below guideline for payment:
1. Please pay for lessons at the beginning of term. Payment for lessons is not retrospective.
2. There are 8 lessons at RM 40.00 each. This adds up to RM 320.00. If there is a variation to this payment,
parents will be notified.
3. Missed lessons. If lessons are missed, the teacher will try and make these up. This will occur when there is
a school event or a notified absence on the day of the lesson. A missed lesson is not when a student forgets or
does not turn up for the lesson. If a student is to be absent or is sick on the day of the lesson, please notify the
teacher in the morning, so that another lesson can be arranged. Some of these missed and notified lessons may
roll over into the next term.
4. If you have a dispute or complaint about the lessons, please contact me directly (Mr. Malcolm McCormick –
malcolmmccormick@aism.edu.my). Our parent volunteer is assisting in the administration of the program
only.
5. Invoices for term 4 will be sent out in week 1. If you do not receive an invoice, please contact me and we will
review our contact details. We look forward to receiving your prompt payments.
2012 AISM Annual Swimming Carnival
Our Annual Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday, 11th September. The day was full of action and close racing
as each swimmer, whether a squad member or a novice racer, gave their best to gain points for their house. As
we worked our way through the 25 and 100m events the scoring was neck and neck. Then the 50m events in
all strokes hit the water with a massive splash. Race after race started to reveal who would fight out the age
champion positions with many coming down to the final events.
Then the real excitement began with house relays in both medley and freestyle. Very
little could be heard over the PA as the roars of cheering could be heard from KL
Central. As the racing came to an end it was still not clear who would take the trophy
from last year’s champions, Sauvage. It was a great day of competition and many
of the competitors will now represent AISM at the ISAC Championships on Saturday,
1st December.
A very big thank you must be given to all the staff for their officiating, supervising,
recording and a special mention to the parents for manning the stopwatches at the
busy end of the pool. It was a fantastic team effort.
Touch and Rugby Tour to Singapore
On Friday, 7th September, 30 of our U14 and Open International School Athletics
Conference (ISAC) Rugby players and 14 of our Girls Open ISAC Touch players
headed off to Singapore to play some warm up friendly games against the Australian
International School Singapore (AISS). AISS are renowned for their strength in Rugby
and Touch, which would prove to be a test for all our teams.
Arriving on the Friday night the students settled with a light training run and then
some dinner. Later in the evening the teams had a run through of tactics and moves,
with the girls training late into the night.
An early rise in the morning after a good night’s sleep and a belly full of breakfast, preparations were made for
the first of the games. All players were excited and nervous as the stage was set for
a tough morning of sport.
First up were the U14s and whilst it became obvious, by the size of the opposition,
that we would find the going hard, the boys never gave up and displayed some bright
passages of play. Being a new sport for some of the boys, the game was a great
opportunity to learn the basics and get a feel for the skills,
tactics and teamwork needed in this great game. The team certainly can hold their
heads high.
In the Open game, once again size and speed were evident in the final score. However,
with a majority of the boys now having a season of experience they were able to hold
their own in many areas of the contest. This team, whilst beaten, displayed great
rugby skill in a number of facets of the game, which I’m
sure will help towards future success in the ISAC competition. The friendlies proved
to be a successful venture in the promotion and learning process of Rugby at AISM.
The last game was an opportunity for the Touch girls to display what they have spent
the last 18 months practicing. The nucleus of this team has worked together this term
focusing on game plans and tactics. This was their chance to put this into practice
against a formidable side. As the game progressed the girls persisted with their patterns of play, which were
rewarded with field position and opportunities to score. Team moves provided some entertainment as they
resulted in achieving territory and finishing off with tries. The final score was a 4 – 1 victory to AISM. This was
unfortunately the last game for the team’s Captain Rebecca Murdoch as she heads off to Australia. I’m sure she’ll
find a team to play with. We wish her all the very best.
This exchange was another example of how our sporting teams are progressing and the sort of opportunities
that are opening for the students of AISM.
Thanks must go to the staff, who give up their time to coach these students, Mr. Coombes and Mr. Bouchardeau
with the Rugby and Miss Wilkins with the Touch.
AISM Girls Volleyball Team Have An Exceptional Start
The Girls Volleyball team had an exceptional start to their International Schools Athletics Conference (ISAC)
season by winning all three matches. The team was challenged in the first round against Tenby who pushed
them to three sets. Always in control, the team easily won the remaining matches against ISKL and MKIS in
straight sets.
Despite having no subs, and Shevonne having a bandaged hitting hand, the team showed exceptional talent
and great teamwork, well led by Hayli. The player of the day was Joanne, who was unwavering in her brilliant
serving, at one stage serving 12 points in a row! Congratulations to Hayli, Gizem, Joanne, Stephanie, Emily and
Shevonne for a great start to their quest to be Division 2 Champions! Good luck for Thursday.
Match Report Friday, 14th Sept
The boys put in a supreme effort at the International School
Athletics Conference League held at the International
School of Kuala Lumpur. All players shone in some way
during the games. Joshua Tan, Bazil and Callum put on
an awesome display of serving quite a few straight points.
Bazil also spiked the ball with skill worthy of an ‘A’ Grade
player.
International School Athletics
Conference (ISAC) Cross Country
coming up on October 7th!
Following our school Cross Country carnival, a
number of fine runners were selected to take part
in the ISAC cross country set for Sunday, October
the 7th. Around 80 students received a note at
this time regarding their race and the distance
they should get ready for.
This past week a number of students also
received notification that the race will be at the
Forest Research Institute Malaysia. We will have
a convoy of cars leaving AISM at 6am heading to
FRIM on the day of the event. However, students
can opt to go there directly. Singlets and numbers
will be given out on the day, but students should
also bring their blue and white PE shirt as well to
identify ourself as members of AISM.
Ajit Lim (Yr 10) wins ShortStuff Saigon Student Film Festival
The Australian International School (AIS) in Vietnam hosted the 2012 Saigon Student
Film Festival, known as ShortStuFF. This year all international schools in Vietnam, local
Vietnamese schools and for the first time all the schools in the Australia International
Schools Association (AIS Hong Kong, AIS Malaysia, AIS Indonesia, AIS UEA and AIS
Singapore) were invited to participate. The competition required participants to create a
short film of a maximum 5 minutes on a theme, and this year the theme was “Dreams”.
Students aged 7 to 18 years old were invited to participate, with three age divisions and
six different categories.
Ajit Lim created a stop/go animation based on the theme
“Dreams”. Ajit’s film was voted the MOST OUTSTANDING film of the festival. Ajit is
very proud of his achievement that took him three days to produce.
Third Culture Kids Talk
Quantum Education,
under the Taylor’s
Education Group
organised a talk at the
school on the topic of
Third Culture Kids (TCK)
for parents and students
on 18th Sept, 2012.
The speaker, Chris
O’Shaughnessy, a Third
Culture kid himself,
delivered the entire
concept in an amusing storytelling way
which engaged and amused the parents in
the morning. Parents left the talk with better
understanding of the unique characteristics
of cross cultural
children and
learnt methods
of addressing
challenges and
cultivating the
benefits of the
experience.
In the afternoon session with the Year 7
to 10 students,
the speaker
connected very
well with the
children and
provided useful
tips to the
Parents’ Association Information
Hi Parents,
Term 3 - done and dusted! Time for a well-earned
break before the end of the year will be upon us.
Firstly, I would like to say a huge “Thank-you” to
Jane Bartley who co-ordinated the food tasting on
International Day and to all those parents who brought
along their fabulous food and helped make this event
the success that it was.
Another big “Thank-you” goes out to Emma Wilson
and her merry band of helpers for making Trivia Night
an “eventful” and fun evening.
There is a lot of effort goes on behind the scenes to
make these events happen successfully and without
the support of our hard-working (not to mention,
unpaid!) parents, we wouldn’t get to enjoy such great
events.
On another note, some interesting points were brought
up at our last PA meeting regarding communication/
comprehension of information. It came to our attention
that not all parents understand eg what a swimming
carnival is, what certain abbreviations mean (ISAC,
IRP etc), who the Chin students are, what charities
the school officially supports. As a result of this
feedback, the PA together with the school would like
to know what information/explanations you would like
to have. We are considering an information “library”
on the website which can then be easily accessed.
Please e-mails thoughts/suggestions to pa@aism.
edu.my.
Looking forward to Term 4 - we are hoping to have
another Twilight Affair evening towards the end of the
term. We’ll keep you posted!
Enjoy the holidays and stay safe.
“AISM OLYMPICS”
Our “cerebral athletes” competed on the 8th September
in the AISM Parents Association Olympics Trivia Night.
Under the watchful eye of chief official and MC Antony,
our parents, teachers and their friends grappled
with questions on a range of subjects and competed
in events such as javelin and shotput. “Nurse Bett”
ensured everything was truly sportsmanlike and above
board.
Competition for Best Dressed team was also tough as
our community had pulled out all the stops, there were
some well dressed Ancient Olympians but the Weight
Lifting team took out the prize.
Congratulations to the AISM teachers team who won
a very close run competition and are this year’s Trivia
Champions.
Our thanks go to all the parents, teachers and friends
who were great sports, making our Trivia Night an
evening of fun and laughter while also raising money
for the Matilda Project. Thanks also to our sponsors
who generously provided our prizes.
Thank you.
