On Thursday 28th of June the GEIDB, GPCL and Eidos will be hosting Conference
participants for a sponsored boat tour of the Western Basin of the Gladstone Harbour.
The two hour tour leaves Gladstone Marina and travels past the RG Tanna Coal Terminal; Golding Point to view the current
construction of Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal; Fishermans Landing Wharf and the reclamation zone at Fishermans
Landing Wharf North; and the LNG Export construction sites for APLNG, QCLNG and GLNG on the Curtis Island Industry
Precinct of the Gladstone State Development Area before returning to the Marina.
The aim of the tour is to showcase major engineering construction and port operations in the Gladstone Harbour. In particular
the construction of three new LNG export plants on Curtis Island; the GPCL Western Basin Dredge and Disposal Project; and
the construction of the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET). In addition to work under construction the harbour
tour will also include a close up view of the existing RG Tanna 4 Berth Wharf and Coal Terminal; the Rio Tinto Yarwun
Alumina Refinery 2 Berth Wharf; the Cement Australia Wharf; other port facilities at Fishermans Landing Wharf plus the GPCL
facilities at Port Central. Technical experts will supply commentary during the tour highlighting both the new projects and the
capabilities of existing port facilities.
The harbour tour will provide an opportunity for Conference attendees to relax and experience the unique and beautiful
Gladstone Harbour Western Basin following the initial day of intensive discussions.
Sustainable development in resource intensive regions - eidos.org.au
welcome
The value of Australia’s resource and
energy exports in 2011 was $190bn,
a 15% increase on the previous year.
At a time of global economic stress,
Australia’s resources sector has helped
it weather the storm. Investment in
Australian mines is at all time highs,
increasing 34% between April and
October of 2011 alone.
The benefits of the mining boom
do not come without creating
challenges. Consideration for the flow
of industry-generated effects into
the wider community is necessary
on a variety of levels. Environmental
concerns regarding the impact of
mining continue to present problems
for the industry. Issues of use of
land, both nature reserves and prime
agricultural land, are becoming an
issue especially with the increasing
prevalence of Coal Seam Gas mines.
The impact of industry is also more
localised. Industry intensive areas
like Gladstone, the focus of this
conference, are seeing significant
changes as a result of the dominance
of those industries. An influx of
workers has led to issues regarding
housing, where supply may be
insufficient to meet demand. The high
salaries offered by mining companies
attracts workers both from across
Australia and within the local area,
which is in turn creating issues for
local businesses unable to compete
with escalating industry wages and
consequently, the cost of living.
Recently, significant scrutiny has
attached to work practices for
mine employees. Fly-in fly-out
(FIFO, DiDo, etc) workers, who
commute to the worksites and live in
work camps for weeks at a time,
are at the centre of the discussion in
terms of the social impact of resource
intensive industries. Psychological
and social problems, including bullying,
isolation, depression and high-risk
behaviour are developing in these
camps. In contrast, the significant
advantages offered by these industries,
in terms of developing a workforce
and regional economies, are allowing
this workforce to gain mobility as
workers are able to maintain their
lives at home whilst working in
remote mining areas.
Companies within the resource
industry are increasingly aware of
these issues that communities face,
and are pursuing sustainable practices
in response. In addition, sustainable
development is being pursued in
terms of economic growth, ensuring
its manageability and ability to be
continued at a steady pace over
the long term.
Given these issues, it is crucial that
industry, government, the community
and academia join together in order
to effectively balance the benefits and
the potential difficulties of Australia’s
resource industry. The Resource
Sustainability Conference 2012 offers
an opportunity for these groups to
share insights, discuss current solutions
and look towards future innovations
in the field in a joint format. In
addition, keynote speeches by leading
government representatives, and
a presentation by leaders in the
mining industry on the social impact
management plan in Gladstone will
be features of this conference. 2012
Currently, Eidos is partnering in
support of a number of major policy
projects seeking to answer some of the
nations toughest and most pervasive
economic and social policy challenges.
These progressive topics are geared
towards influencing and shaping
Australian public policy. As an avid
supporter of open debate and dialogue
on topical public policy issues, the
Eidos Institute has recognised the need
for an open space for Australia’s leading
and emerging researchers and policy
leaders to promote and present their
latest findings.
The Eidos Institute’s National
Conference Series 2011 provides an
opportunity for researchers and policy
leaders to present, promote and
disseminate world-class research to a
broad audience. This dissemination
allows the private and public sector, key
government decision makers, as well as
world-class researchers to initiate and
maintain dialogue, resulting in a more
informed public sphere.
In light of this recognition, The Eidos
National Conference Series was born.
Held nationally and presented by Eidos
in partnership with university members
and partners, is unique in that it focuses
