the Foundation continues to make for the betterment of our community.
in 2005, many individuals and businesses generously contributed to the
various funds at the Foundation. these gifts have brought our total assets
to nearly $4m and total number of charitable funds to 66.
thanks to our financially successful Key event and Community golf Classic,
plus our growing operations endowment Fund, the Foundation has been able
to increase our support of the community through additional grant-making
dollars this year. more than $200,000 in grants have been awarded through the
many charitable funds held at the Foundation. we are proud to report that since our
inception in the fall of 1999, the Foundation has surpassed $800,000 in charitable
giving. no other organization, public or private, is as committed to providing for the
future needs of this community. with your support, the possibilities are endless!

in the past few years, the Foundation has experienced phenomenal growth. with the
establishment of the Community Foundation, our community was provided a vehicle
that would assist and guide them in their charitable giving. and, they were certainly
ready to seize the opportunity.
today, more than 66 funds have been established! and, for the Foundation staff, it
requires continuing guidance and research for 66 different donors. the staff must be
knowledgeable about the community needs, the nonprofits serving our area and the
many different quality-of-life projects available in our area. working to secure the
continuing confidence, trust and support of our donors is the ultimate task of our
exceptional staff.
in 2004, realizing the continual growth and the inadequate amount of dollars available
to operate the Foundation, the Board of Directors kicked-off a campaign to establish
an operations endowment Fund. these dollars would provide an income to secure the
future of the Foundation. this income will be used to pay for the Foundation’s operation
costs to allow all monies raised at the Key event and the Community golf Classic to be
used solely to benefit community projects and our residents. we are continuing to
secure pledges from both individuals and businesses to reach our $4m goal.
today, the Foundation is more than a vision... the Foundation has become an integral
part of charitable giving in our community. thank you to all of you who have seen the
vision… made the Foundation a reality… and for building today to meet the needs
of tomorrow.

the Foundation helps facilitate this process making it easy for donors to achieve their
charitable goals.
the Foundation offers donors a variety of fund options for
individuals, families, businesses and nonprofit organizations.
our personalized service offers efficient and flexible
ways for donors to be charitable through the Community
Foundation. our staff works closely with donors to assist
them in selecting the right fund to fulfill their philanthropic
aspirations. Fund-holders can determine how much or how
little they want to be involved with their fund.
the following funds are available through the Community
Foundation. each fund carries its own name and set of
guidelines. Contributions to each fund can be made at
any time.

T y p e s o f f u n d s
Unrestricted Funds
Enable donors to make charitable gifts for the benefit of the entire community. These funds allow the
Foundation to respond quickly to pressing community needs. Grants are provided to those organizations
working to enhance the quality of life in West Chester and/or Liberty Townships.
Agency Endowments
Support the mission and goals of a nonprofit agency. Established by an organization or family, these
funds help create a steady stream of income for operations, programming and other organizational needs.
Donor Advised Funds
Provide an opportunity for donors to recommend distributions to specific charities at their convenience.
These funds allow givers to combine income tax planning with charitable giving. Donors obtain an income
tax deduction for the value of appreciated assets when making a gift to the Foundation.
Designated Funds
Provide support to a donor’s favorite charity. These funds create a permanent endowment to support
organizations long-term.
Field of Interest Funds
The perfect choice for donors who wish to support an area of interest, such as the arts, the environment
or children.
Scholarship Funds
Provide an opportunity to help students achieve their educational goals. Scholarship funds can be
designed for any level of education from pre-school to post-graduate work. Donors may designate
particular eligibility requirements, field of study or a specific geographic area.

the foundation helps donors identify
issues of importance to them and
inspires community organizations
to address these important issues.
Bob lawhorn was an inspired man who inspired others. his legacy will continue
through the Bob lawhorn education Fund, established to inspire others to fulfill their
dreams. Bob, a norwood high school graduate, was a spirited man who, throughout
his life, always cared about others. with his caring smile, generosity, humor, and real
compassion, Bob reached out to people from all walks of life. his zest for life was felt
by everyone he touched.
last spring, Bob passed away after a short, courageous battle with cancer. with the
support of Bob’s wife, lew ann, along with many other friends and family, Bob’s spirit
is able to live on through the scholarship established in his name. to help raise funds,
friends and family hosted the 1st annual Bob lawhorn golf outing. the event raised
more than $180,000 for the scholarship fund. awarded to a graduate of norwood
high school, this full tuition scholarship to the university of Cincinnati is renewable
for up to four years of undergraduate enrollment. there is no doubt that this
opportunity will brighten the future of a young student working hard to pursue
his/her educational aspirations.
a self-made man, Bob not only valued education but also the importance of giving
back to the community. the Bob lawhorn education Fund provides an opportunity for
Bob’s generosity to continue, even after his passing. there is no doubt that Bob’s spirit
and love of life continues to inspire others.

scholarship—$1,000
this scholarship, open to any student in the west Chester/liberty area, is for students who wish to attend
a trade school, two-year technical or community college or a four-year college or university.
Kyle J. Babcock scholarship—$2,000
this scholarship allows Kyle Babcock’s spirit to endure. Kyle was a passionate 18-year-old with an infectious
smile and quick wit. as a competitive soccer player at Bishop Fenwick high school, he is remembered as an
intelligent, athletic, outgoing student with a great sense of humor.
harold Draut scholarship —$750
the harold Draut scholarship provides a legacy to mr. Draut, a lakota educator for almost 30 years.
mr. Draut was a caring, sensitive, trustworthy and unselfish man whose sense of humor and humble spirit
endeared him to everyone.
Bob lawhorn education scholarship—$8,900
this scholarship has been established in memory of Bob lawhorn, a spirited man who cared about others
throughout his life. Bob reached out to people from all walks of life which was demonstrated by his caring
smile, generosity, humor, and real compassion. his zest for life was felt by everyone he touched.
glen e. mieling scholarship—$2,000
this scholarship honors glen mieling who had a passion for living and a love of science. as a senior scientist
at procter & gamble, his insight and intelligence allowed him to make many valuable contributions in the
area of drug design and development. outside of work, his great sense of humor and vitality endeared him
to family, friends and co-workers.
pete’s list of excellence in history and government—$500
raymond (pete) peters put aside his educational aspirations to put his life on the line in world war ii.
after legislation was signed enabling wwii veterans to receive their high school diploma, pete received
his diploma during a celebration for his 75th birthday. like pete, pete’s list, recognizes students who have
excelled in history and government.

Kristin Renneker Scholarship Fund—$4,000
Kristin Renneker’s legacy lives on through this scholarship fund. Kristin is remembered as a beautiful,
intelligent, athletic and outgoing student. In addition to sharing the captain spot on the varsity basketball
team, Kristin was an All-Academic GMC player who participated in a varsity sport.
Dana Spangler Scholarship Fund—$500
This scholarship has been established in memory of Dana Spangler, a young lady who had a great love of
life. Dana was active in school and community and loved volleyball and softball.
Mark Vaccariello Scholarship Fund—$600
This scholarship allows Mark Vaccariello’s spirit to live on. “Mr. Lakota, 1979” was the caption under Mark’s
name in his high school yearbook. An outstanding young man, Mark faced an overwhelming battle with
cancer and fought with great courage, spirit and endurance. He was never without a charming smile.
Voice of America Centre Scholarship Fund—$5,000
This scholarship provides an opportunity to recognize and reward the community’s military men and
women by assisting veterans returning from active duty with educational and/family obligations.

through the Youth in Philanthropy
program, a youthful perspective is
infused throughout the foundation.
Y o u T h I n p h I L a n T h r o p Y
engaging youth in philanthropy is an opportunity to prepare young people to be
active, lifelong community citizens. this is the philosophy the Foundation used to
guide the development of its Youth in philanthropy (Yip) Fund.
Developed as an initiative of the Foundation and the Pulse Journal, the program is
designed to introduce local high school students to philanthropy and community
development. the program provides hands-on experience that benefits both the
participating students and local charities. By their involvement with the Yip program,
students work in the community to raise money, build endowment funds and make
grants to nonprofit organizations working to improve the lives of youth in
our community.
in 2005, Yip was engaged in a variety of community initiatives including the shamrock
shuffle, the union Centre Boulevard Bash, and the liberty township Fall Festival. Yip’s
biggest effort occurred on september 11th, when the students hosted the 2nd annual
operation gratitude gift Drive. this initiative provided students an opportunity to use
their voice to rally support for the troops serving oversees. as a result, the community
generously donated food, toiletries, games, books, and toys, along with many other
items to be delivered to troops during the holiday season.

Since the fund has been established in 2004, nearly $20,000 has been given back to
the schools in support of various projects. Every day throughout the school district,
teachers, staff and parents are taking money out of their pockets to help where there
is a need in the classroom. Needs range from classroom incentives to bringing in a poet
or author to work with students for a week.
The needs continue to grow and the requests
continue to outpace the funds available from
within the district. Thus, the Lakota Fund was
established to provide an added resource to
specifically benefit the Lakota teachers and
staff to maintain the resources critical to the
success of all Lakota students.
“Dollars from the Lakota Fund
were a life-saver this summer for
our 90 plus English-as-a-Second-
Language (ESL) students. The
money was used to purchase
healthy food for the children over
the six weeks. Our school nurses,
along with the teachers, coordinated
healthy snacks because many of our
children have poor eating habits.
The junior high class presented a
wonderful unit on the rain forest
and included the opportunity for
the children to taste the different
foods available from the rain forest.”
The purpose of the Lakota fund is to provide
funds for special class projects for all Lakota
schools and for the educational development
of Lakota teachers. It is critical to the success
of every Lakota student to have the best
teaching resources available. Through this fund, the Lakota teachers and staff are able to
think outside the box and have the resources to make their projects come alive.
One of the unique aspects of this fund is that donations to the fund are given from the
Lakota teachers and staff. This is one way they can give back to benefit many others in
the district. Community members also give to this fund in honor of their child’s teachers,
retirements, birthdays and just because they believe in the education of their students.

everyone to consider planned giving as a charitable giving vehicle. Donors can make
planned gifts through wills, trusts, gift annuities, life insurance or real estate. each of
these gift options provides donors an opportunity to fulfill their charitable giving goals
while providing incentives and financial benefits.

goals. in the Fall of 2005, the Foundation partnered with the hamilton Community
Foundation to host a Financial advisor Conference. as a result, over 100 attorneys,
financial planners and accountants attended a variety of sessions focused on promoting

The Top 10 Things To Do
1. Prepare a will. Only 50% of those who pass away have one. Without a will, you lose control of the
possessions and wealth you worked a lifetime to acquire.
2. Leave a gift in your will for the charitable organizations that made a difference in
your life. Less than 3% of all wills settled contain a charitable provision. Imagine the positive impact on
our community if everyone made a donation to a favorite non-profit, even a modest gift.
3. Leave a specific dollar amount or percentage of the assets in your will to your
favorite charity. The provision can be part of a new will or added to your existing will with a simple
amendment, called a codicil.
4. Consider using assets for your charitable gift. These include, but are not limited to, cash,
stocks, mutual funds, term deposits, real estate, vehicles, art, jewelry or insurance. Such gifts may even
provide tax savings to you and your family.
5. Name your favorite charity as the beneficiary of your IRA, retirement plan or
pension plan.
6. Purchase a new life insurance policy naming your favorite charity as the beneficiary.
7. Name your favorite charity as the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy.
8. Remember deceased loved ones with memorial gifts to charities.
9. Encourage family and friends to leave gifts to charities in their wills.
10. Ask your financial or estate planning advisor to include charitable giving as
part of their counsel to clients.

thirteen years ago a group of caring people in our area came together to raise funds
for the american Cancer society. led by patti alderson and Debbie Boehner, the event
raised thousands of dollars and became what is known today as the Key event. their
vision was to provide a venue to bring the community together for an evening of fun
and raise money to help those in need at the same time. throughout the early years,
the Key event also supported reach out lakota, Dreams Come true and others. today,
the Key event raises more than $100,000 hosting 500 guests and continues to allow
the Foundation to fulfill its mission of facilitating charitable dollars through its grants
to many nonprofit groups benefiting our community.

G o l f C l a s s i c
On the first Monday of August the Foundation holds its annual Community Golf
Classic. With 220 golfers, the 2005 event was held at two area courses, Beckett Ridge
and Wetherington, followed by dinner and a live auction at Beckett Ridge. The Golf
Classic, founded by the late Bob Lawhorn, is presented each year in his honor. As Bob
was known for always having a good time, the event follows his lead. While enjoying
the camaraderie and competition of good friends, the 2005 Classic raised more than
$70,000 for the community.
