Background
M/s Orenda Aerospace Corporation., (Orenda) based in Canada, have developed the OGT
1200 turbine engine (refurbished helicopter turbine engines) capable of generating 1.2 MW /
2.4 MW power that can run on a variety of feed stocks ranging from bio oils derived from
biomass or non-edible seeds to conventional fossil fuels. It is proposed to offer a complete
power generation package, based on the OGT 1200 starting from fuel
preparation/processing to distribution of the generated power. The plant will not only cater to
the in-house requirement of a private power consumer (an industrial establishment), but also
supply surplus power to nearby rural cluster(s). For the supply of surplus power, emphasis
will be on interventions that stimulate rural economic growth and contribute to a variety of
cross-sectoral development objectives. The program is also intended to create demand
through productive end-uses such as agricultural processing, lighting for business purposes,
communications, irrigation, and income generation activities. In the above context, Orenda
along with its partners CFM, VDMI and EMAI has sought co-operation with M/s Uhde India
Private Ltd. (UIPL) and M/s Winrock International India to implement this concept, and help
undertake the necessary accompanying measures to create a market for such models. The
Phase of I of the support involves the following:
Develop criteria for site selection;
Provide assistance with the selection of three pilot sites to participate in the Program;
Work plan development for Phase-II
The following chapters of the report detail the approach and activities under each of these
tasks, entailed in Phase-I of the project.
