Ihe primary objective of the proposed proJect is to provide flood protection in the lower reaches of
y'emon Crqek drainage basin and limit the impact of flooding on land and structures. A secondary
rbjective/benefit of the proje.ct will be a higher level of treatment of water in the basin (metals and
roilutants) and habitat protection and enhancement for blue and red listed species.
Ihe City of Vernon Master Drainage Plan identifies that significant flooding will occur in the area with
:he Water surface of flooding for the 10 year storm being 4.08 meters above the normal water level
i4 meters deep) which would result in a breach of the creek banks and be 325 meters wide (normal
:¡.eek width is between 5 and 25 meters). This depth and width of flooding would impact
approx¡mately 74 Hectares up to a depth of 4 meters (approximate maximum depth of flooding on
mprovements/ developed property of 2 meters). Flooding to this extent damages residential houses,
:ommercial properties, airport industríal lands and buildings and the airport runway thereby
rotentially limiting emergency services access to the airport as it is designated.
l'he proposed project is the fist of several phases that will provide the following:
, Flood mitigation and protection for existing lands to the 200 yeâr return period storm event.
'Conveyance of 100 year return period storm event.
, Sediment removal
' Metals and pollutant removal where possible.
, Habitat protection for red and blue listed species and enhancement for blue listed species,
' Flood protection of existing airport site.
, Flood protection of approximately 74 Hectares of residential, airport industrial and commercial
ands inoluding lR#6 First Natìons Lands.

The project would address the problem (flooding) through the construction of flood ptotectlon

beneflt).
