The key finding in each of the follow-up surveys is that all three schools support ongoing efforts of
the SchoolTravel Plan, with IO0% support from Ellison,g6%o from Harwood and 97%from Okanagan
Landing elementary schools' respondents. The survey also demonstrated a decrease in the number
of students being driven to and from school, with an increase in students walking, taking transit and
cycling. The most effective activity identified in the change in student travel behavior of all three
schools was infrastructure improvements. These results are identified in Attachment 3.
Next Steps
The next phase of the STP for each school is to assist Ellison, Harwood and Okanagan elementary
schools in implementation of the action plans, including:
lnstallation of traffic school zone signs,
lmplementation of the "Walking School Buses" now that the construction is complete,
o Continuation of safety education and promotion through parent newsletters, assemblies,
PAC meetings, websites and ongoing classroom education,
o lnitiation of the six week bicycle skills and safety program for grade 4 and 5 during their
physical education classes,
o lmplementation of the community awareness events (Bike to Work/School, Clean Air Day,
Car Free Day and lnternational Walk to School Month),
Conduct follow-up hands-up surveys in the fall of 2011 on modes of travel and,
Continue with the two new school travel plans for Mission Hill and Silver Star elementary
schools.

Attachment 2 - outlines the proposed "Walking School Bus" routes. The school travel plan report
was sent to the national office in November of 20L0. These reports will be posted
on the new transportation demand management section of the city website this
spring.
Attachment 3 - outlines the results summary of:
o Travel habit changes for trips to and from school,
o Change in travel modes and
o Most effective activities (such infrastructure changes, safety education,
newsletters, route identification etc).
