INFLATIONS
Designed by
Specialists
for Exceptional
Performance

Experience
Since 1933, Maes has been designing and producing superior milker inflations for the
dairy industry. Maes designers know that dairy producers depend on their inflations for
thorough, gentle, timely and consistent milkout, from cow to cow, from milking to milking,
from the first day throughout the life of the inflation.
Years of experience have trained us to pay attention to all the elements that go into an
excellent milker inflation. The rubber/polymer mix must have the correct characteristics
of strength, compression, smooth finish, and elasticity. From the mouth to the bore
to the milk tube, inflation shape, size and dimension must be properly proportioned to
allow problem-free flow between the cow and the milk collecting system. From cow to
cow, from milking to milking, from the first day throughout the life of the inflation.
Quality
We are confident that the materials, manufacture, testing and quality control of Maes
inflations are unsurpassed in the industry. Maes inflations are compounded of the
finest quality raw materials, with an optimum level of natural rubber to balance milking
speed with gentleness. Pure rubber is combined with polymers and additives which
address specific needs. Some additives help the inflation resist distortion which age
and milk fat can cause while others contribute to a smooth finish for cleanability or help
to soften the material for enhanced suppleness and gentle milking. Our formulas aim
to balance the characteristics of safety, performance and cleanability to satisfy our priorities
in inflation design.
The Maes manufacturing process assures quality at every stage. Only the highest
standards are acceptable in raw material, personnel, equipment condition, and cleanliness.
Maes practices aggressive quality control at every step to assure the producer’s
new set of inflations is identical to the set being replaced. Before coming to market, a
new inflation, such as the Tri-Magna triangular inflation, is extensively field and lab
tested for the all-important attributes of gentleness, performance, and quality.
Innovation
Maes is known as the “Problem Solver” in the inflation business because of our specialty
in addressing specific problems such as drop-off, slippage or incomplete milkout.
For example, the Magnaflex M226 has a bore which narrows down gradually to a
wide milk tube resulting in a much smoother milk flow and less chance of back flow.
Maes Tri-Magna styles, available for Surge, Delaval or Bou-Matic milking systems,
combine our custom rubber blend formulation with an innovative triangular bore. This
gives a uniform, gentle, three-sided rather than two-sided massage on the teat. The
triangular bore improves grip especially toward the end of the milking period when the
flattened empty teat is more susceptible to slips and drop-offs.

Anatomy of an Inflation
the mouthpiece
The opening at the top of the inflation should be
the appropriate size for the cows. If the mouthpiece
is too large, small teats can be
sucked down into the bore. If too small, the inflation
makes a poor attachment which can be costly
in time, udder health, and lost milk.
the head
The head is designed to fit the milking shell snugly
and securely in order to eliminate slips,
squawks, and deforming.
the vacuum chamber
The space inside the head is proportioned to provide
the correct reservoir of vacuum around the
teat, resulting in a secure attachment.
the bore
The bore flexes with the vacuum pulsations to
massage the teat and release the milk. This is
where Maes’ super-soft formula is most appreciated
in gentleness, cow
comfort, and udder health.
the rings
Several Maes styles, including the M226
Magnaflex Inflation for Delaval 06 shell shown
here, feature a series of three positions for shell
fit. The first ring provides the least tension on the
bore for good flex in low vacuum situations. The
second position creates a little more tension and
is good for cows with small teats. The third position
provides the proper tension on the bore for
top performance in high level vacuum systems.
the milk tube
A well-designed, tapered milk tube quickly carries
the milk away without flooding the claw.
the claw end
Most styles of Maes inflations feature a reinforced
claw end to minimize cuts caused by the rubber
flexing against the stainless steel claw nipples.
Claw end reinforcement contributes to longer life,
lower replacement costs
and higher profits.
®
The Maes story began in 1911 with Bob Maes, a
young inventor working on a dairy farm with the
crude milking equipment in use at the time. He
visualized more practical, safe, and efficient ways
to milk cows and he began to patent and produce
inventions which soon proved their worth with top
dairy herds. Over the years, the creative spirit of
Bob Maes has been kept alive with innovations in
design, materials and manufacturing processes.
The Maes brand was acquired by The Coburn Co.,
Inc. of Whitewater, Wisconsin, in July of 1996. A
family business with a long history of its own,
Coburn has been manufacturing and distributing
livestock supplies and milking equipment since
1925. Coburn has earned a reputation for superior
customer service throughout its widespread
dealer network. That reputation now stands solidly
behind the Maes brand.
Maes inflations are available for all
major brands of milking equipment.
