Remote Mine Site Development
Proper classification of Canada’s permafrost is essential to mine
planning, development and operation to ensure the location of mine
infrastructure will have the least impact on permafrost. NUNA’s
combined management and site personnel have worked throughout
Canada’s North gaining a high level of experience with varying
permafrost. Additionally, NUNA has the earthmoving fleet capacity to
address the movement and placement of millions of cubic meters of
earth required for mine site development.

AGNICO-EAGLE MINES LIMITED
Meadowbank Gold, Nunavut, Canada
NUNA’s work primarily comprised the construction of an
108 km all-weather road starting north of the Hamlet of Baker
Lake to the Meadowbank site. Nuna planned and mobilized all
equipment and supplies to Baker Lake necessary for year-round
construction activities – with only 6 weeks to source and position
at Churchill, Manitoba for furtherance by barge to Baker Lake. Road
construction required the planning and development of 22 quarry
locations, crusher operation, drill and blast activities, survey control
for layout and as-built preparation as well as installation of 9 bridges
to facilitate the river crossings and 119 culvert installations. NUNA
also carried out the construction and maintenance of all necessary
infrastructure to support the operation.
NEWMONT MINING CORPORATION
(Formerly Miramar Mining Corporation)
Hope Bay Gold Project (Doris North), Nunavut, Canada
Since 1991 Nuna has worked closely with Miramar Mining
(former owner) with respect to project planning, design and
costing estimates. Nuna continues that process under Hope Bay’s
new owners, Newmont Mining. In 2007, Nuna mobilized, via barge,
equipment, supplies and a crew of 37 into site and provided site
services, construction of the Windy Lake 2,800' airstrip, camp pad,
tote road, crushing and construction and maintenance of seasonal
ice access roads (Roberts Bay to the Doris North site). In 2010,
Nuna became General Contractor, as well as part of the EPC
Design-Build Team, to optimize design and minimize total installed
costs. Nuna provides a full complement of services including safety,
engineering, quality control and procurement and are involved in
all planning, scheduling and execution of site civil infrastructures:
roads, airstrips, jetty landings, quarry development, culvert and
bridge installations, and site services support. Nuna provides heavy
equipment, crushers, cranes, shops, concrete batch plants and drill
and blast activities as necessary to support the work.
BAFFINLAND IRON MINES CORPORATION
Mary River Iron Ore Project, Nunavut, Canada
The Mary River project started in 2007 and NUNA became the
General Contractor responsible for the successful delivery of a
120,000 ton bulk sample from Mary River to Milne Inlet. NUNA
carried out the planning and mobilization of all necessary equipment
and supplies for the: construction of a 120 km all-weather road
with 4 major river crossings to the Mary River site; 9 km road up
a mountain to the ore body; drilling, blasting and hauling of ore to
the crusher, crushing of fine and lump product and hauling crushed
product to the coast at Milne Inlet for transfer onto ships. NUNA
also provided services for the construction and maintenance of
all necessary infrastructure to support the operation such as camp
setup and operation, airstrip construction and maintenance, fuel
containment construction and maintenance, shops and
power generation.
