Traffic control is very important to the environment.
BELLIS presents practical solutions and lays the ground for the future.
BELLIS has been setting the standards for future-oriented, modern and environmentally-friendly traffic
measures in Brunswick since 2006. “Land of milk and honey for drivers,” is how the FAZ* described
the benefit to road users in Brunswick and said the following about the use of innovative technologies:
“There is no other comparable or more extensive test area in Germany.”
BELLIS indeed constitutes an unusual model. Originally established to implement municipal traffic
measures in Brunswick as a private project company, BELLIS has in the meantime developed into much
more. BELLIS pragmatically and efficiently takes up anything that promises to optimize and produce
immediate improvements to concrete municipal traffic management and, in particular, that promises to
enhance environmental-friendliness. Which is something that Brunswick road users are aware of every
day. Besides that, BELLIS also participates as a competent partner and driver in scientific projects
that are aimed at developing innovative, environmentally-oriented traffic technologies and tests the
actual effects of the results of these projects in practical use in the city of Brunswick. It is in this
way that BELLIS makes a decisive contribution to unique, innovative and future-proof solutions for
environmentally-oriented measures designed to manage traffic.
‘Grüne Lenkanstöße’ is what BELLIS calls this entirely individual approach and which it is developing
into an independent brand. Our services: benefit from our experiences and our competence. We would
be happy to work with you in finding environmentally-oriented traffic solutions for your municipality.
SUSTAINABILITY
Grüne LenkanstöSSe FOR
ENVIRONMENTALLY-ORIENTED TRAFFIC CONTROL.
BELLIS provides comprehensive services for municipalities
to all aspects of modern and environmentally-oriented
traffic management. BELLIS is able to deliver the
full range of services related to traffic-light systems,
parking-area/traffic control, traffic technology and
signs. We will handle traffic-engineering tasks using the
most up-to-date technologies. Our performance spectrum
includes the range of municipal operator models
for highly modern traffic-management solutions that
may be adapted in scale to suit individual municipalities‘
requirements and needs.
BELLIS works with its partners to create environmentally-oriented
traffic-management systems for its customers.
We will work with you to develop a profile
of requirements for environmentally-oriented traffic
management that is adapted and tailored to local circumstances.
In this profile, we will consider the various
framework conditions as defined by the size of the
town or city and the existing traffic infrastructure, assess
compatibility with existing IT environments, analyse
interface management and determine any useful
additions, e.g. detection or extended control features.
We will develop a tailor-made, thin and efficient solution
to specifically suit your needs.
Our ‘Grüne Lenkanstöße’ approach is presented in detail
below.
SERVICE
Consistent and practical.
BELLIS creates environmental
awareness in everyday road use.
We work in the real world and are so our experience
means that we know the practical solutions to
a municipality‘s needs. Over recent years, BELLIS
has done and achieved much in the implementation
of environmentally-friendly solutions.
Our employees use delivery bicycles, Segways and
electric cars to get around Brunswick in an environmentally-friendly
way and their daily work is simplified
with the help of these flexible vehicles. Existing
traffic-light systems that use conventional lighting
equipment are being gradually replaced with energy-saving
systems that employ LED technology.
BELLIS gets the power it needs for traffic-signal systems
from renewable energies (100% hydroelectricity).
Such intelligent traffic-management instruments
as the traffic-light control and the parking-guidance
system that BELLIS helped develop are assisting the
city in its efforts to considerably reduce fine-dust
and minimize CO 2
emissions.
Exemplary solutions have been created in this way.
They help to sustainably fulfil the municipal obligations
that have been specified in clean-air plans –
and are able to do so without the need for setting
up permanent and restrictive environmental zones.
BELLIS supports municipalities from planning to the
realization of their obligations to implement the
traffic measures defined in the clean-air plans.
BELLIS stands for ecologically aware management
measures. We would be happy to be your partner
in the creation of tailor-made implementations for
your municipality.
SUSTAINABILITY
OUR PERFORMANCES.
VEHICLE FLEET
TRAFFIC LIGHTS
BELLIS uses alternatives to equip its own vehicle fleet.
For instance, delivery bicycles are being increasingly
used for installation, cleaning and repair work. Segways
are frequently the more environmentally-friendly
alternative to motor vehicles, particularly for traffic
engineers.
Around 19% of the power required worldwide is consumed
by lighting equipment and bulbs. LED lamps
possess extremely longer lifespans and require considerably
less energy than conventional lighting systems
do.
That‘s why BELLIS is gradually converting all traffic-light
systems to use LED technology throughout.
CO 2
REDUCTION
Modern traffic- and parking-control measures are able
to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions considerably. Intelligently
controlled progressive signalling systems
ensure that traffic flows as smoothly as possible without
causing any unnecessary CO 2
emissions that usually
occur when vehicles are forced to wait at traffic
lights or get caught up in stop-and-go traffic jams.
Innovative parking-control systems help people find
parking spaces quicker and thus also eliminate unnecessary
traffic flows and therefore considerably reduce
CO 2
emissions.
Environmentally-oriented
development, environmentallyoriented
steering.
BELLIS – the driving force behind
entirely new solutions.
BELLIS has worked with its partners to develop the
UVM* environmentally-friendly traffic-management
system. UVM is unique. It constitutes the currently
most innovative and technologically leading solution
for environmentally-oriented traffic measures on the
municipal sector.
A new approach is required because increasing
quantities of traffic are causing pollutant emissions
to rise. And planning for the future also requires
functioning concepts that will reduce the emissions
of fine dust (PM 10
), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2
) and carbon
dioxide (CO 2
). The permanent measures that have
been employed to date, e.g. environmental zones
and traffic bans, are static and restrictive. But dynamically
changing parameters – fluctuating traffic volumes
and changing meteorological conditions – mean
that such measures often quickly reach their limits.
So a solution is needed that doesn‘t only measure
pollutant emissions and then creates static solutions
in response to these measurements but that makes it
possible to develop measures to manage traffic that
are dynamic.
This solution is called UVM. UVM has been incorporated
and tested as a pilot system within the trafficmanagement
system implemented in the city of
Brunswick and is now available to the market as a
fully developed solution. The system constitutes a
major milestone in the development of modern
traffic concepts and sets standards for the future.
UVM is a service being offered to municipalities
wishing to optimize their traffic infrastructure in
an environmentally-oriented fashion.
BELLIS initiates, coordinates and creates answers for
future solutions to municipal traffic problems.
Protection among others.

SUSTAINABILITY
UVM – ENVIRONMENTALLY-ORIENTED TRAFFIC
MANAGEMENT IN THREE STAGES:
DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENTAL
1. MONITORING
The solution developed by BELLIS and its partners produces a dynamic register
of the environment. Emissions by traffic are modelled on the basis of traffic-data
measurements that are already available. These calculations are verified with the
aid of measuring containers operated by the state‘s environmental authority. The
data that is thus validated in this way may then be used to determine emissions at
any place within the city without the need to install measuring containers everywhere.
The data is collected in a register and presented graphically in a map of the
municipal grid. This is the prerequisite for online-based, effective and dynamic environmental
monitoring.
2. EFFICIENT
TRAFFIC CONTROL
The up-to-date data measurements allow traffic-control measures to be derived
that help make a quantified contribution to reducing traffic-related emissions. They
are initiated in a targeted manner so that they are only implemented in limited areas
and for limited periods of time. Bundles of traffic-control measures are appropriately
downgraded and deployed so that emissions may be specifically reduced in
critical areas. The result is an optimum mix of measures designed to make traffic
flows more constant and to eliminate concentrations of traffic by spreading it out.
3.FORECAST MODULE
In future, a forecast module will be added to the system that will enable corresponding
preventive measures to be initiated. The pollutant emissions will be calculated
on the basis of traffic forecasts with the resulting appropriate traffic measures
being derived from these calculations. Road users will be informed in advance
and at an early stage about current traffic measures and their causes. The consequence
will therefore also be a greater acceptance of restrictive measures in road
users.
UVM is a concrete and pioneering solution that has been fully developed in practice
to achieve environmentally-oriented progress in modern traffic-management
systems.
BELLIS is the driver for green approaches to traffic control and creates solutions.
We are your partner on your way to environmentally-oriented traffic solutions of
the future.
