President’s Message
Kevin Cunningham, President, Ramsay Community Association
So far we have had some great weather this spring, the snow
has been kept to a minimum, and we have had some hot days
that are rare, even for July. Hopefully this means we are going
into a fantastic summer!
Visioning - Action Planning
The third phase of our visioning is the action planning phase.
It will be in the lower hall on Saturday, June 23rd, from
10:00am – 2:00pm. This is going to be the time to put ideas
to paper, so make sure you come out and participate.
Community Cleanup – Sunday, June 10th
Community cleanups are a great way to get the community
working together to clean the alleys and local green spaces.
Here’s some tips on how to make our cleanup a success:
• The cleanup will start at 9 a.m. and end by 2 pm sharp.
Residents arriving with garbage after 2 pm will be refused.
• The following items may not be placed in the packer trucks
or brought to the cleanup site: tires, household chemicals,
car batteries, home appliances, propane tanks, home electronics,
glass, microwaves, liquids.
• If using personal trucks, ensure loads are properly tarped
according to the City of Calgary’s rules.
Volunteers are needed to help in the cleanup. We need trucks
to help pick up, as well as adults and kids to pick up garbage
along the streets. Food and beverages will be provided for all
volunteers. Sunshine will also be provided.
Inspiration
I’ve had a few conversations with fellow Ramsayites over the
last month or so about what has inspired me when talking
about community. So I’ve decided to list out some of the
fantastic documentary films that have served as
great inspiration for me. I hope they will do the
same for you.
Us Now, 2009
You can watch this one right online for free.
watch.usnowfilm.com/ This film, for me, was about public
governance and the use of the web as a tool to get people
connected in a mass collaboration.
Urbanized, 2011
A great look at urban design throughout history, focusing
on the more recent. I feel this gives me some perspective on
issues that we have in our community and inspires ideas on
solutions for those issues.
No Impact Man, 2009
This is a film and a running blog by Colin Beavan. What I
love about this is the simple message: “What can we do to
make a positive change while maintaining our happiness?”
What a great line! noimpactman.typepad.com/
Slumming It
A two-part series portraying Kevin McCloud’s epic two-week
experience in the slum made famous in Slumdog Millionaire.
This truly hits home the message that strong community can
happen anywhere, it is independent of the containers we shelter
ourselves with.
There are plenty more, but I have found that these help
inspire us to shift away from the “me” thought pattern to the
“us” movement. Let me know if you have a book, film, blog,
or article that has inspired a small or large change in your life.
City Hall Report for Ward 9
Alderman Gian-Carlo Carra, Historic City Hall • 403-268-2477
Well, Ramsay, it seems summer is finally upon us. I hope, making a real difference in our neighbourhoods
as I write this in early May, that this is the year the mosquitoes
decide to pack up and relocate to Edmonton, and that well as examples of Calgarians’ three things, are
and our City. More details of the project, as
our predictable June rain only comes at night- leaving all of online at www.3thingsforcalgary.ca. I have my 3
us free to head to Pop’s for ice cream, take the dogs up to things, and hope you can come up with three things too!
Scotsman’s Hill, or head over to Caffe Rosso for an earlymorning
coffee.
initiative my office piloted over the winter was a great suc-
Finally, I’m happy to report that the west-gate Zoo access
With the grass now green and schools finishing up, I wanted
to briefly introduce the Mayor’s “3 Things for Calgary” everything went smoothly, there were minimal issues, and
cess. According to the Zoo representatives I met last month,
initiative, for of all those who have not yet heard about this they are more than happy to continue this project for Winter
great civic project. The premise of the project is as follows: 2012/2013. For those unfamiliar, our office issued special
1 Think of three things you could do to make Calgary better access passes to all Inglewood and Ramsay residents who have
2 Do those three things
an annual Zoo membership so that they can walk to the Zoo
3 Get three more people to do their three things.
in the winter and have access through the south security gates
It essentially asks every Calgarian to think about things when the west gate is closed.
they love about the City, and try to make the City better, In closing, as June begins, I hope you get out and enjoy
in three ways. It can be as small as smiling at the strangers the parks, the people, and the festivals that make this City
you encounter on the street, or baking cookies for your busy so great in the summertime. Amidst the gardening, the biking
and the barbeques, if any issues come to mind that Team
neighbour, or it can be as big as committing to take transit
for a whole month - or even a whole year! No matter how big Ward 9 can help out with, we’re always here for you at 403-
or small, each of these gestures will begin to add up and start 268-5330 or ward09@calgary.ca.
Ramsay’s Kind-Hearted Baker
by Nancy Janovicek
The recipes that Leah Layden, owner of Double Elle Bakery,
uses are as old as the heritage building that houses Ramsay’s
new bakery. Most of the recipes are not written down. Her
grandmothers, aunts, and mother taught her how to bake
bread when she was growing up in Kneehill County, southeast
of Red Deer. They were passing down recipes that they
had learned from their elders. Her great-grandparents arrived
in Alberta in 1898. In the early 1900s, her great-grandfather
found the site where the young family established the Layden
Homestead. Travelling homesteaders en route from Innisfail
to Three Hills knew that they would find a warm meal and
place to stop for the night on the Layden Homestead.
You’ll find the same hospitality at Double Elle Bakery.
It’s a cozy place decorated with antiques and art that Leah
and her family have collected
over the years. There is a 1938
Baldwin piano in the corner.
There’s an interesting story
behind the piano. Leah took
piano lessons when she was
young. She missed playing
and was in the market for an
instrument. On her Facebook
page, she posted a comment
explaining why pianos are wonderful
instruments that deserve
care. A stranger read this, and
contacted her to ask her to
provide a new home for their
piano. (She’s still looking for a
stool.) Customers are welcome
to play a little tune when they
stop in for bread and sweet
treats.
Most days, Brenda will take
care of you until Leah returns
from her “bread and butter
job” as a legal assistant. She
keeps the bakery open after 5:00 pm because she realizes that
Ramsay is a working community. In the kitchen, her faithful
tools – “Gloria” the Globe Mixer, “Patricia” the proofer,
and “Ollie” the oven – help to ensure consistent quality. On
Saturday mornings, her son Jules helps out. Her partner,
Charlotte, provides the behind-the-scenes support that Leah
needs to get the business off the ground. There is a friendly
family debate about whose grandmother makes the best pastry.
Leah started baking at an early age. She helped to cook and
bake during the harvest season when there were ten to twelve
extra mouths to feed. She grew up surrounded by people who
understood the importance of wholesome, homemade food:
“We are a lot of good cooks. At family reunions you do not
lack for food.” Everything that she sells at Double Elle is from
a family recipe. Leah’s favourite is the pineapple-carrot muffins.
(It’s top secret. I asked.) Many Calgary Posties stop by
for poppycock to munch on while they deliver mail. My dad
– who lives in Ontario – is also a big fan of her handmade
candied popcorn. His only complaint is that I never send him
enough!
Leah’s had her eye on the 1910 heritage building on the
corner of Spiller and 23rd Ave SE for a while. She started
selling home-style white bread, whole wheat bread, and other
goodies at Valta Bison last December. When Darlene and
Gil, the owners of Valta Bison, decided to retire, selling the
business to Leah was a natural fit. When she took over the
business, her family moved into the living quarters, which
were built in the 1940s. Leah has been doing research on her
home so that she can put up old photographs that explain the
building’s history over the last
one hundred years. She knows
that it’s been a general store,
a knick-knack store, a bakery,
a sewing shop, a market, and
Valta Bison. She’d love to talk
to you if you know more about
the space or have pictures of
the bakery in its previous lives.
Leah was drawn to Ramsay
because it’s “more about
community than other communities.”
She believes that
community begins with family
and then spreads out to the
neighbourhood. Art, music,
and food bring a community
together. She hopes that
Double Elle will foster Ramsay
talent. She’s interested in displaying
art, selling locally-produced
jams, jellies, and canned
goods, and providing performance
space for musicians.
She has plans to turn the back yard into a community hub.
Leah understands the importance of supporting community:
“If you operate in a community, you should support it. You
depend on it for survival.” And she gives back to community.
She fed us at the last visioning meeting, regularly donates
food to a weekly independent art program, and has a 50% off
table in the shop.
After I chatted with her, Leah insisted on giving me a
loaf of whole wheat bread and a half-dozen of the pull-apart
cheese buns. I headed to The Area for the Urban Aggie Days
and shared the cheese buns with Ramsay and Inglewood
neighbours who had gathered to learn more about how to
support good, locally grown, sustainable food. As we enjoyed
the buns, we all agreed that Leah is a welcome addition to the
community of Ramsayites who are making sure that we all eat
well.
One of the key focuses in Canada’s Economic Action Plan
2012 is the need to streamline the regulatory process for
resource projects. This proactive step will ensure that Canada
leads the world in sustainable resource exploration and development,
while continuing the creation of new jobs, and longterm
prosperity.
Responsible Resource Development is designed to end the
burdens that are caused by the bureaucratic review process.
This streamlined process will not remove any environmental
safeties, or restrictions to sensitive ecological areas. All projects
must continue to meet all Environment Canada guidelines.
Currently, companies undertaking major projects must navigate
a complex maze of regulatory requirements and processes,
and approval processes are long and unpredictable. Responsible
Resource Development will remove those unnecessary hurdles
for entrepreneurs and companies. It will streamline the review
process for major economic projects by providing a predictable
timeline for project approvals. It will prevent long delays that
kill potential jobs and stall economic growth by putting valuable
investment at risk.
Since 2006, your Government has been working to streamline
the review process for major economic projects and
Responsible Resource Development in Canada’s Economic
Action Plan 2012 is the next step to further reduce barriers to
investments in Canada’s resources.
In 2010, Canada’s natural resource sector employed more
than 760,000 workers across the country. Canada’s mining
and energy sectors alone represent 10 percent of the Canadian
economy and 40 percent of exports.
Over the next ten years, more than 500 new projects representing
over $500 billion in new investments will be proposed
for Canada. The potential for job growth is enormous.
With the emerging economies in Asia and around the world
providing the potential to create even more jobs and growth,
our Government will act swiftly to implement its plan for
Responsible Resource Development in the interest of the
Canadian economy.
resource review process visit http://www.nrcan.gc.ca.
Otter, ‘wolf & Explorer
Scouter Rick, 403-278-2547
This has been an active month for all the
kids with none of them seeing much of the
inside of the hall. The Otters have been to the
Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and on a historic
tour of Inglewood. They visited the Explorers and had a
canoe trip on Carburn Pond.
Back to the history of Inglewood. We first went to the
Fort and I explained how the North West Mounted Police
crossed the river and started the town of Calgary. I went on
to tell them more about how the town grew and the rugged
conditions for the first settlers. At the end of the little talk
I asked the kids, “Who were the first settlers????” Charlie
popped up and said they were the COPS. So there you have
it from a very cute 5-year old Otter: the cops settled Calgary.
The Explorers have been busy getting ready for their big
adventure. All of May, they have been biking, and finished
off with a 35 km trip from Priddis to Maclean Creek for a
camp. Now they are on to canoeing and will finish off with
a trip on the Bow from Ghost Dam to Cochrane. June will
be backpacking month with a trip in Kananaskis Country.
Last weekend we had a chocolate sale at the Forest Lawn
Co-op. We had some super salespeople. They sold out!! If
you were there and bought a bar... Thanks.
Next month we won’t slow down as we have a food drive,
soapbox derby, cardboard boat race, Scouts of Steel challenge
and lots more.
