TENNYSON EDITION
0 From the Principal
Mr Peter Chapman
Few would have pictured, after the devastating floods of 2011, what we
see today at Tennyson.
Through hard work, grit and determination, in little more than three
years this facility has become one of the finest schoolboy sports facilities
in the country.
From the Br CL (Charlie) Dillon Boatshed to the Old Boys’ Grandstand,
thousands of Terrace students and their GPS colleagues have continued
a sporting history that dates back to the early 1960s when the land was
first acquired.
Today is a special day for the Terrace Community and I welcome you
all. I am sure you will enjoy a day filled with Rugby from the under 13’s
through to our First XV clash kicking off at 2.30pm.
I am especially pleased that our good friends from Brisbane Grammar School are with us today. In
2011 when we found ourselves with Tennyson out of action, Grammar and then Headmaster Mr
Brian Short, provided us with a ‘home away from home’.
So a very warm welcome to Grammar players and supporters and to those from other GPS schools
competing today.
We have a busy schedule planned of matches, activities, entertainment and the Blessing and Opening
of the Old Boys’ Grandstand immediately before the main game.
None of this would be possible without the very generous support of the Terrace Family, especially
those who have contributed to the Tennyson Campaign, which was spearheaded by the Terrace
Foundation.
May all matches be played in the true spirit of the game.
Please enjoy the day.
Please note: All draws are correct at time
of publication. Please check website or
THE HISTORY OF TENNYSON
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN…
Tennyson was bought for £12,500 on 17 November 1961 when the need for larger playing
grounds arose with the expanding school population.
The land needed to be changed from cow paddocks to first class sporting fields. This
required the help of Brothers, parents and students alike. From 1962 working bees
were formed with rosters for the tireless weekend work that was needed to make the
transformation.
Carloads of men would arrive on the weekends, carrying their own tools and carting
water in kerosene tins from the nearby Sea Scouts hut. Local turf was sourced, as it
proved better than the bought turf. Car boots, trailers, barrows, cartons and hands
delivered the turf to the prepared grounds, which were hard and difficult to work.
The process at Tennyson brought the Terrace Community together with men working
side by side every weekend, doing all they could to get the grounds up to standard.
Men gave their time generously and worked tirelessly with bare hands and their own
tools sustained by the lunches prepared by wives and mothers.
The ovals were used for the first time in June 1964 for overflow Rugby games. Nine
age division teams played against Ipswich Grammar. By August Tennyson was ready
for major fixtures.
Working bees continued throughout this time, completing the caretaker’s house, tree
planting, completing the driveway and building the grandstand.
The grandstand was made up of a galvanized roof supported by steel girders and
posts on cement blocks. Concrete tiers were put in to hold the seats, which were
brought from the assembly hall, repainted and braced. Additional seating was made
and placed on concrete slabs around the oval.
The year 1968 saw the last of the working bees after the canteen was built to supply
the ever-growing demand of hungry boys and families.
The grandstand was all but destroyed during the devastating floods of 2011.
0 Director of Sport
Mr Damian Wright
Welcome to Round 1 of GPS fixtures
for Terrace hosting
Brisbane Grammar School in
Rugby and Basketball.
The Basketball round will be
spread across five courts (four
venues) with BGS generously
providing two courts to allow all
boys from Years 5-12 the opportunity
of playing on Saturday
morning. It is a compressed
schedule to allow boys from
both communities the opportunity
to travel to Tennyson to
attend the opening of the Old
Boys’ Grandstand.
The Basketball program for 2014
has been working hard behind
the scenes - being heavily involved
in club fixtures and attending
training/skill sessions.
This is a program moving forward
with expert leadership
from Sam Mackinnon and good
coaching from many experienced
men off the court –the
shining lights being Matthew
Hamilton-Smith and Andrew
Latimer. Basketball is getting
stronger at Terrace and the
young men who will represent
the College this weekend deserve
recognition for their hard
work. The First V are a strong
team of very talented boys who
are looking for back-to-back victories
over BGS after winning
their fixtures in 2013.
The Rugby program is the largest
of all the sporting programs
at the College and encompasses
well over 750 boys. With that
many boys involved it is a
challenge every week to find
games, training fields, and especially
suitable coaches. The
task of steering this formidable
program is assigned to Tyron
Mandrusiak, one of nature’s
true gentlemen, who is by far
the most patient man I know in
dealing with the numerous and
varied elements of feedback he
receives daily.
It is appropriate to recognise the
new opportunities for many in
the Terrace Community upon
reflection of the outstanding
generosity of the BGS Community
when we were at our neediest
in 2011 following the floods.
BGS opened their doors and
their playing fields at Northgate
to allow Terrace a home game.
I wish all Terrace Gentlemen the
best of luck for the season ahead
– remembering to always compete
to you highest level and
at all times in the spirit of good
sportsmanship and humility.
BLESSING AND OPENING
OF THE OLD BOYS’ GRANDSTAND
TENNYSON EDITION
College Captain Nicholas Fidler
Welcome to the Official Opening and Blessing of the new St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace Old
Boys’ Grandstand.
The Very Reverend Dr David Pascoe
God of wisdom and love, in 1961, you gathered the Christian Brothers, lay teachers, parents and young
men of Terrace here at Tennyson as the Terrace Family to develop a place of belonging, companionship
and community.
The Tennyson playing fields have connected us with one another, our families and our stories. The
floods of early 2011 were a reminder of how much we value this place of community and we rejoice
in the opportunity for renewal and rebirth offered to us in coming home to Tennyson today.
In our 139th year, we pray in thanksgiving for the gifts Tennyson has brought to our lives. We pray
with gratitude for the continuing mission of the Christian Brothers and the unfolding dream of
Blessed Edmund Rice. Their vision and commitment to the Gospel has lit a path for us to follow. We
pray that this magnificent grandstand is a place where the light of Christ shines and spreads across
our fields, igniting our boys with your Spirit and bringing our community together in Your Name.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
All: Amen
And so with peace and thankfulness in our hearts, we ask for God’s blessing on each of us and on
our extended community. We ask for God’s blessing on the Old Boy’s Grandstand as a place of special
meaning for the community of Terrace. May this gathering place be a sign of opportunity and joy for
all who come here to play, coach and support.
The response is:
May this be a place of community in good times and in bad
A place of many blessings
May this be a place of friendship and camaraderie
And may this be a place where the great wisdom of serving God’s love for us all
be present and real to all who walk on this land.
Commissioning
Father:
Gracious God, we ask for your blessing on the students, staff and parents who gather at Tennyson.
May they be drawn together in a spirit of co-operation and enthusiasm as they share their many gifts.
Mr Tyron Mandrusiak
The 2014 Terrace Rugby Program
is well underway and will
once again see a record number
of boys pulling on the Red and
Black butcher stripe jersey. A
special welcome to our friends
from Brisbane Grammar School.
The Terrace Rugby Community
has developed a solid foundation
with clear goals and objectives.
The Rugby program is
committed to offering a safe and
well - structured environment
with the focus on participation,
enjoyment and the opportunity
to learn. In doing so, the program
provides boys, coaches and referees
with a strong framework
for improvement and abundant
opportunity to develop the key
elements of Rugby.
On Saturday, 38 teams will be
taking the field to represent Terrace.
With so many boys taking
part, the program requires
a huge amount of support. This
is achieved by working in close
partnership with the coaches
and managers, referees, parents,
doctors and sports aids. On
behalf of the 750 boys playing
Rugby – I thank you.
I would like to particularly thank
Mr Darren Round and the Rugby
Supporters’ Group for the work
they put into the program and
making a day at Tennyson the
best schoolboy Rugby can offer.
0 Rugby First XV
I would like to acknowledge all
Open Rugby players and thank
them for their efforts over the
years playing Rugby at Terrace.
These young men, along with
the First XV, have played Rugby
at Terrace, some since Year 5 in
2007. Your parents have supported
you through all those
years… win, lose or draw. The
Terrace Community is very
proud of you and in your final
year at Terrace we want to publically
thank- you for pulling on
the Red and Black jersey over
many years.
I would also like to take this opportunity
to thank the coaches
Anthony Gibb and Ben
McCormack and manager
Patrick Howell for their efforts. I
also would like to acknowledge
the efforts of our strength and
conditioning coaches Simon
Price and Jono Roussetos and
physio David Bick.
The First XV squad has shown
good pre-season form, including
on tour to Melbourne playing St
Kevin’s College, practice matches
against Ipswich Grammar
School, Nudgee College and last
weekend Brisbane Boys College.
I am confident the First XV head
into today’s game well prepared
to take on BGS.
0 Basketball - Mr Sam Mackinnon
The 2014 GPS Basketball season
tips off this Saturday with
20 Terrace teams competing in
Round 1 of games against Brisbane
Grammar School.
I would like to acknowledge the
30-plus coaches who have been
working with our young men
from Year 5 through to the 1st
V. It is exciting to see more than
200 young men participate in
the Basketball program and I
hope we can strengthen and develop
the program over the coming
years.
The Terrace season launch was
held at Waterford Place last
weekend and it was great to see
so many of the younger years
and their families in attendance
and watch our 1st V team in a
convincing win against St Peter’s.
Thank-you to the Basketball Supporters’
Group, headed by Judy
Soong, for their hard work in
making this day such a success.
The 1st V squad has enjoyed an
excellent pre-season led by Mr
Hamilton-Smith and Mr Latimer
which included an intensive
camp at Tallebudgera over the
Easter break and 12 pre-season
games, winning eight.
In addition, many of the Terrace
boys have been playing for
Brothers in the U16 and U18 age
groups at Auchenflower on Friday
nights with positive results
TENNYSON EDITION
and four teams qualifying for finals.
Our Primary Basketball teams
compete in the GPS this season
and we have five teams representing
Years 5-7. For many,
this is their first introduction to
Basketball. The focus has been
teaching basic fundamentals
and team concepts to provide a
strong foundation for our players
as they start their Basketball
journey at Terrace.
I have been impressed by the
players’ commitment and hard
work and look forward to my
first season being involved with
Terrace Basketball.
Over its 40-year history Tennyson
has been one of the premier
sporting facilities in the country.
However, it means far more to
the Terrace Family than that. It
is a place where we are bound
together, where each of us belongs
and all of our talents can
be found.
In many ways, Tennyson is like a
second home. That is not a platitude.
It is simply the most apt description
of the place Tennyson
holds in our hearts.
When you walk through its
gates, as a Terracian, you know
that it is your home. When you
run onto the fields and begin to
play, a sense of belonging and
worthiness overwhelms because
you know that every single one
of your brothers wants you to
succeed. It doesn’t matter if they
are watching you play; your ability
is not important; whether or
not you are acquainted is even
irrelevant. No matter what, they
will show you nothing but encouragement
on the field, because
you all belong to the Red
and Black.
Your success is theirs too.
I struggle to imagine many other
times in a person’s life, when
they might feel such a strong
sense of belonging, worthiness
and unity. Indeed, the absolute
support of 1400 brothers is not
common. That is why Terracians
cherish each moment on these
fields.
The Old Boys’ Grandstand is a
tribute to the rare gifts that
Tennyson has brought us. For
many years to come it will enhance
the lives of thousands of
many more Terracians.
