3.3.2 Other epidemiological methods The following epidemiological methods were also used:- la) Data collected from rural area (study villapel (i) Census was carried out to define the important demographic characteristics of the study population. (ii) Cross sectional school morbidity survey, which included a detailed clinical history and examination of ch~ldren studying in the village school was conducted (iii) Random survey of school children was done for causes of school absenteeism. (iv) A cohort of 215 children between 5-20 years of age were randomly selected from 100 families and followed up fortnightly for, morbidity, school absenteeism, ,nutritional intake and activity pattern for one year. School absenteeism was studied only in children between 5-15 years of age as they fonned the school going age. (v) Data were collected from the records maintained by the village health nurse (VHN) and the primary health center (PHC), on morbidity pattern ~n children. jb) Data collected from the tertiary care hospital Data were collected from the following sources:- (I) The medical records department 3 Data on the nature of illness for which children between 5-15 years of age attended the hospital were collected at weekly intervals for a period of one year 3 Details of the regularity and duration of follow up ln selected children suffering from cerebral palsy who attended the hospital over a period of one year were also obtained.
(11) Pedlatrlcs Inpatlent ward => Over a period of 3 months, detalled lnfonnation on health care was obtained from parents of children who were admitted with acute symptom(s). LC) Data collected from the Government Chest Clinic (i) Data on treatment given to children suffenng from tuberculosis over a period of one year were collected from the clinic records. 3.4 Organization of data and analyses (a) The qualitative data were organized in Word Perfect version 5.1 and analyzed using the Text base Alpha software package. (b) All the quantitative data collected were organized in a computer data base (dbase IV) and analyzed using Quattro Pro version 5 and Epi Info 6 packages. (c) The statistical tests applied were Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test. Student's "t" test , ANOVA. KnrskaCWallis test and Z test for large sample means. Epi info 6. Quattro Pro, and Epistat software packages were used for the statistical analyses.
