AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 2.1 Overall aim The overall aim of this case study is to h~ghlight some of the health, educational and social issues in school age children with emphasis on the girl child in a rural area of Tamil Nadu, India. The results of the study will be useful in formulating appropriate measures to improve the quality of life of these children. 2.2 Specific objectives 2.2.1 Health (a) To assess the nutritional status of school age children. (b) To study the morb~dity pattern of school age children. 2.2.2 Education To study the educational status of school age children in terms of:- (a) Magnitude of school enrollment, school absenteeism and school dropout. (b) Causes of school absenteeism and school dropout. 2.2.3 Socioeconomic (a) To study community perceptions and attitude towards the girl child. (b) To study the health seeking behavior of the family with respect to their children.
(c) To study the diet pattern of children wlth reference to difference between girls and boys. (d) To study the degree of participation of children in different household and occupational activities. (e) To study the influence of menarche on the social status of the girl child. (f) To estimate the direct cost of illness of the children to the family. (Q) To find the direct cost of education of the children to the family. (h) To flnd the cost of celebrating social functions such as attainment of puberty, rnarrlage and first child birth to a girl in the family.
