For a better comprehension of their health, education and social status, qualitative ethnographic research which brings out the community's point of view, in combination with quantitative sociological and epidemiological studies which bring out the quantum of the problem wwld be more appropriate. Such studies need to be canied out particularly in rural areas since, India still continues to be a land of villages despite increasing urbanization. With these key points in mind, this comprehensive study combining both qualitative ethnographic methods and quantitative sociological and epidemiological methods was planned to assess the health, education and social status of school age children with emphasis on the girl child, in a rural area.
