The UB Alumni Association will hold its annual
awards ceremony on Friday, March 20, 2009, in
the Adam’s Mark Hotel in downtown Buffalo. All
alumni, friends and supporters of the university are
invited to attend the alumni association’s signature
event and pay tribute to a group of outstanding
individuals for their accomplishments in their field,
for bringing honor to UB and for their extraordinary
volunteer efforts. Single tickets are $100; tables of
10 are also available for $1,000.

recognition of his contributions

of research in this field. He
is a professor in the department
of laboratory medicine
and internal medicine at
Yale University School of
Medicine and director of the
Yale-New Haven Hospital
Clinical Microbiology
Laboratory. Edberg resides
in Westbrook, CT. Paul A.
Battaglia, JD 1972, has
been named a Buffalo Law
Review honoree in recognition
of his outstanding
service to the University
at Buffalo Law School.
He resides in Orchard
Park, NY. D.
Jozwiak, BS

1973, has
joined Gaines Kriner Elliott,
a public accounting firm in
Buffalo, NY. He has more
than 30 years of accounting
experience and lives in
Cheektowaga, NY. Sheryl
Gordon McCloud, BA 1976,
received the 2008 William
O. Douglas Award in recognition
of extraordinary
courage and dedication to
the practice of criminal law.
She is an adjunct professor
in the Seattle University
School of Law, cochair of
the Washington Association
of Criminal Defense Lawyers
(WACDL) amicus committee
and a member of WACDL’s
board of governors.
McCloud lives in Bainbridge
Island, WA. Loren Etengoff,
BA 1977, has been named
governor of the third congressional
district for the
Washington State Bar
Association. He is a personal
injury lawyer with memberships
in the American
Association for Justice
and the Clark County Bar
Association. Etengoff lives
in Vancouver, WA. Kenneth
A. Manning, JD 1977 & BS
1974, received the New
York State Bar Association’s
2008 President’s Pro Bono
Service Award for his outstanding
pro bono service,
with an emphasis on helping
to provide equal access
to the justice system for all
citizens of
New York,
irrespective
of their

financial
standing.
He received
manning the Dr. Philip
B. Wels Award from the UB
Alumni Association in 2005
and resides in Kenmore, NY.
Vikki L. Pryor, JD 1978 &
BA 1975, received the 2008
Bronx Community College
Presidential Medallion in
recognition of her leadership,
philanthropic efforts
and commitment to higher
education. She is president
and CEO of SBLI USA and
resides in New York, NY.
Nancy Carriuolo, PhD 1979,
is president of Rhode Island
College and chief academic
officer of the Rhode Island
Office of Higher Education.
Previously, Carriuolo worked
as dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences, School
of Hotel and Restaurant
Management and the
Dietetics Administration
of the University of New
Haven, where she was also
an English professor and
assistant provost. She lives
in Providence, RI. E.
Evanko, JD 1979 &*Ann MA 1973,
is president of Hurwitz and
Fine law firm, which she
joined in 1979. She resides
in Orchard
Park, NY.

E. Schutt,

elected president of the
New York State Society of
Professional Engineers. He
lives in East Aurora, NY.
David J. Lipman, MD 1980,
received the 2008 American
Society for Microbiology
Promega Biotechnology
Research Award in recognition
of his outstanding contributions
to the application
of biotechnology through
important microbiological
research and development.
His work has led to
the creation of PubMed
(which provides access
to biomedical literature)
and the maintenance of
GenBank (an annotated
collection of all publicly
available DNA sequences).
Lipman is a member of
the National Academy of
Sciences and the Institute of
Medicine and a fellow of the
American College of Medical
informatics. He resides in
Rockville, MD. Jeff Markin,
BS 1980, is CEO and president
of VirtualScopics Inc.
He previously served as
the company’s COO and
spent 26 years at Eastman
Kodak Company. Markin
lives in Rochester, NY. Alan
D. Mathios, BA 1980, has
been appointed Rebecca Q.
and James
C. Morgan
Dean of
Cornell
University’s
College
of Human
Ecology after
serving as interim dean
of the college since 2007.
He is a professor of policy
analysis, coeditor of the
Journal of Consumer Policy
Management and project
leader on the Consumers,
