NEWS MEDIA INTERACTION<br />
Halloween Food Safety<br />
Supervising <strong>Environmental</strong> Specialist (ES) Zarha Ruiz provided information regarding Halloween food<br />
safety during an interview conducted in Spanish for Univision Channel 19.<br />
COMPLIANCE ASSISTANCE, WORKSHOPS AND OUTREACH<br />
Food Safety Education (FSE)<br />
One FSE class was conducted in October with 3 participants representing 3 facilities. The class was<br />
conducted in English.<br />
Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMP) Workshops<br />
Two HMP workshops were held with five businesses in attendance.<br />
Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention<br />
ES Debbie Katz displayed information on childhood lead poisoning prevention at the Rancho Cordova<br />
Public Library and also in the lobby of the <strong>Sacramento</strong> County Administration Building in recognition of<br />
Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. For calendar year 2009 (including October), there have been<br />
32 cases of childhood lead poisoning in <strong>Sacramento</strong> County. There were a total of 94 childhood lead<br />
poisoning cases in 2008.<br />
<strong>Sacramento</strong> Valley Rental Housing Association<br />
Supervising ES Marie Woodin, ESs Eric Sutton and Sharon Zimmerman, and <strong>Environmental</strong> Compliance<br />
Technician (ECT) Margie Chatwood participated in the <strong>Sacramento</strong> Valley Rental Housing Association<br />
Expo in order to publicize the County’s new Multi-Family Recycling Ordinance.

EMD Director Val Siebal met with incoming SEC Chair Mark White and outgoing Chair Robert Bailey to<br />
review meeting topics for the 2010 calendar year.<br />
<strong>Sacramento</strong> Valley Medical Society<br />
EMD Director Val Siebal presented information on legislative changes to EMD programs to members of the<br />
<strong>Sacramento</strong> Valley Medical Society.<br />
Texas <strong>Environmental</strong> Health Association<br />
<strong>Environmental</strong> Health Division (EHD) Deputy Chief Alicia Enriquez presented information on EMDs<br />
Green/Yellow/Red Placarding Program at a meeting of the Texas <strong>Environmental</strong> Health Association.<br />
Solano County (CA)<br />
EHD Deputy Chief Alicia Enriquez met with <strong>Environmental</strong> Health Program staff from Solano County to<br />
discuss EMD’s Green/Yellow/Red Placarding Program. Solano County staff accompanied ES Kari Wagner<br />
on a food inspection in order to witness the Program in action.<br />
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT AND COLLABORATION<br />
<strong>Sacramento</strong> <strong>Environmental</strong> Commission (SEC)<br />
EMD Director Val Siebal and <strong>Department</strong> Executive Secretary Vicki Kloock provided staff support to the<br />
October meeting of the SEC. Michael R. Wiley, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the<br />
<strong>Sacramento</strong> Regional Transit District, provided information on building plans for the Downtown Natomas<br />
Green Line to the Airport and noted that a groundbreaking ceremony had been held on October 12. Paul<br />
Marshall, Planning and Operations Manager for the Delta Habitat Conservation and Conveyance Program<br />
and Karla Nemeth, Liaison between the Natural Resources Agency and the Bay Delta Conservation Plan,<br />
presented information on the state of planning for the peripheral canal in the <strong>Sacramento</strong>-San Joaquin<br />
Delta. Mr. Stein Buer, Executive Director of the <strong>Sacramento</strong> Regional Flood Control Agency (SAFCA),<br />
spoke about levee repairs in the <strong>Sacramento</strong> area.<br />
<strong>Environmental</strong> Council of <strong>Sacramento</strong> (ECOS)<br />
EMD Director Val Siebal met with the Executive Officer of ECOS to discuss coordination of the <strong>Sacramento</strong><br />
<strong>Environmental</strong> Commission and the County Planning Commission.<br />
UST Cleanup Discussion<br />
EMD hosted a multi-agency panel discussion on Underground Storage Tank (UST) Cleanup Funds which<br />
was attended by members of EMD’s Site Assessment and Mitigation team.<br />
California Integrated Waste <strong>Management</strong> Board (CIWMB)<br />
EMD Director Val Siebal and <strong>Environmental</strong> Compliance Division (ECD) Chief Dennis Green met with an<br />
executive staff member of the CIWMB to discuss/review grants and County/State relationships.<br />
Food Industry Working Group<br />
EMD Director Val Siebal, EHD Chief John Rogers, EHD Deputy Chief Alicia Enriquez, Supervising ESs<br />
Kelly McCoy and Zarha Ruiz, and ES Sonia Lee met with members of the EMD Food Industry Working<br />
Group to provide an update on recent changes to the California Food Code.<br />
CCDEH Onsite Wastewater Technical Advisory Committee<br />
EMD hosted a meeting of the Onsite Wastewater Technical Advisory Committee of the California<br />
Conference of Directors of <strong>Environmental</strong> Health (CCDEH)<br />

2009 World Health Aquatic Conference<br />
Supervising ES Colleen Maitoza participated in the Model Aquatic Health Code Steering Committee<br />
Meeting held during the World Health Aquatic Conference.

Disaster Preparedness Training<br />
EHD Chief John Rogers, ECD Deputy Chief Elise Rothschild, and ESs Robert Duncan, Sophia Johnston,<br />
Doug Osborn and Heather Tanner participated in Disaster Preparedness Refresher Training held at the<br />
<strong>Sacramento</strong> County Emergency Operations Center.<br />
Local Enforcement Agency (LEA)<br />
Supervising ESs Lisa Todd and Marie Woodin, and ESs Lea Gibson, Derek Jacks, Victoria Krohn, Mary<br />
Ellen Oetzel and Patrice Webb attended the Annual Local Enforcement Agency (LEA)/California Integrated<br />
Waste <strong>Management</strong> Board (CIWMB) Conference.<br />
Technical Information Exchange Conference<br />
Site Assessment and Mitigation staff from the <strong>Environmental</strong> Compliance Division (ECD) attended the<br />
Local Implementing Agency Technical Information Exchange Conference hosted by the Central Valley<br />
Regional Water Quality Control Board (CVRWQCB).<br />
California Onsite Wastewater Association<br />
EMD hosted an Operation, Maintenance and Monitoring (O&M) training session provided by the California<br />
Onsite Wastewater Association.<br />
<strong>Environmental</strong> Enforcement Training<br />
ECD staff attended a one-day environmental enforcement training course designed to improve their skills in<br />
determining violations, gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and report writing. This training was<br />
provided by the California <strong>Environmental</strong> Protection Agency (CalEPA) in conjunctions with EMD and the<br />
<strong>Sacramento</strong> County District Attorney’s office<br />
EnvisionConnect User Conference<br />
ESs Amanda Hakim, Rashmi Nair, Lisa Perez, Eric Sutton and Sara Vining; Sr. Informational Technology<br />
(IT) Analyst John Stender; IT Analyst Rob Milano; Accounting Technician Sothea Chhang; and Senior<br />
Office Specialist Kristin Ledbetter attended the Annual EnvisionConnect User Conference which provides a<br />
forum for users to learn new features and capabilities of the product which is the main application software<br />
utilized by EMD for data management.<br />
Refrigerating Engineers and Technicians Association (RETA)<br />
ESs Dennis Karidis and Michelle Sever attended the 2009 National Conference and Heavy Equipment<br />
Show sponsored by the RETA and received valuable training on the management of ammonia as well as<br />
the safety design and operation of ammonia refrigeration systems.. There are a number of businesses<br />
within the County of <strong>Sacramento</strong> which currently utilize anhydrous ammonia, an extremely hazardous<br />
substance, for their refrigeration needs.<br />

EHD Deputy Chief Alicia Enriquez received a scholarship to attend the CDC Conference and was invited to<br />
present information regarding EMD’s Green/Yellow/Red Placard and Food Safety Rating System.<br />
National Swimming Pool <strong>Environmental</strong> Health Leaders Conference<br />
Supervising ES Colleen Maitoza spoke on the highlights of the new California Health and Safety Code<br />
Section relating to public pools and the requirement for anti-entrapment devices and systems at the 2009<br />
National Swimming Pool <strong>Environmental</strong> Health Leaders Conference.
