entries & opportunities Arlington Arts Center Solo Shows 2009 > Call for Entries The Arlington Arts Center seeks contemporary fine artists working in all media for solo exhibitions in their 2009 season. Ten to fifteen artists will be chosen to show in their seven separate galleries. Jurors include: Anne Ellegood, Curator for the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and Phillip Barlow, notable Washington, D.C., art collector. Essex Art Center Annual Juried Show > Call for Entries The Essex Art Center announces its 15th Annual Juried Show, juried by Miriam Stewart, Assistant Curator of Drawings, and Michelle Lamunière, Assistant Curator of Photography, both at the Harvard University Art Museums. The exhibition will run from October 24 – December 5 and the application deadline is Friday, September 12, 2008. Work must be submitted through slides and all media will be accepted. Glimpses in Time: International Juried Photography Exhibition > Call for Entries Photographers working in all styles and mediums are invited to enter up to two of their photographic images for the international juried photography exhibition: Glimpses in Time. The top award recipient will receive a solo exhibition at the Joyce Jordon Gallery. The juror will be Steve Wirtz, owner of the pretigious Steven Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco, CA. This year’s exhibition pays tribute to the life and art of James Van Der Zee, an American-born photographer, who captured the most comprehensive documentation of the Harlem Renaissance. The Light Factory > Call for Entries The Light Factory announces its 2008 Members Show, which will open on Saturday, July 12, 2008. The show gives every member a chance to be featured in an exhibition. While all that is submitted is judged, the show is not juried; whatever you send in, gets in. All mediums are welcome. Newburyport Art Association > Call for Entries The Newburyport Art Association announces its Fall I Members’ Juried Show, which will be on display from August 22 – September 14. Work must be dropped off on Monday, August 18 between 11am and 7pm. The Fall II Members’ Juried Show will be on display from September 19 – October 12 and work must be dropped off on Monday, September 15 between 11am and 7pm. Picture the Change > Call for Entries Since the early 1960s, the visual vocabulary of social change has been dominated by images of massive, popular demonstration. More recently though, such public events have failed to capture the public imagination or produce visual icons similar to those of the March on Washington, the March on the Pentagon, the ERA rallies, or the AIDS quilt. Yet the hard work of social change continues all around us every day. Instead of mass protest, we now have organic farms in the heart of the city, music studios catering to positive hip-hop, laboratories dedicated to clean energy, socially responsible businesses, and youth workers reaching out to the dropped out and disengaged. This project seeks to collect an array of images from Boston, MA that represent these modern forms of social change and challenge our understanding of what constitutes social change itself. The project will remain open until September 2008, at which time a panel will review the collection and select a portfolio for an online and, funding permitting, a traveling exhibition. Providence Art Windows Project > Call for Proposals Artists are invited to submit proposals for the Providence Art Windows Project. Works by selected artists will be installed in windows downtown. Proposals may include pre-existing or site-specific work and may be 2-D or 3-D. There is a $100 stipend available. There will be 2 rounds of installations, opening September 18 and December 6. Soho Photo Gallery > Call for Entries The Soho Photo Gallery announces its 2008 Fourth Annual Alternative Processes Competition, juried by Dan Estabrook. The exhibition will run from November 6 – 29. Up to five pieces may be submitted in the form of work prints or slides for a $40 entry fee, and work must be received by August 1. Common forms of alternative process prints are: Cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, Tintype, Bromoil, Platinum, Palladium, and Polaroid image transfer. Questions concerning eligible forms should be directed to Margery Franklin. The competition is open to U.S.-based artists at least 18 years of age, with the exception of members of Soho Photo Gallery.
