GUIDELINE TO FORESTRY LUBRICATION<br />
Whether we talk to large logging companies or smaller independent loggers, it all comes down to productivity<br />
and environment. From large self sustaining logging machinery to hand operated chain saws, most of the<br />
equipment needs lubrication. We supply a comprehensive range of lubricants for the forestry, be it in arctic or<br />
in the most severe tropical conditions.<br />
The Forestry Industry can be divided in the following categories:<br />

1. Diesel-powered Engines<br />
Forestry equipment is often used in remote areas. The quality of the diesel fuel used often leaves a lot to be<br />
desired. The sulphuric content of the diesel fuel should be neutralized by the engine oil used. Therefore a<br />
high TBN Diesel Engine Oil should be applied. Distinction is made between older and newer equipment. For<br />
the older equipment, an SF/CD S3 with a TBN of 10 is suitable. For newer<br />
equipment, CF, CG-4, CI-4 and CI-4+ are the standard. The newer the<br />
equipment, the higher the output (relative) and the more expectations to<br />
the longevity of the lubricant.<br />
Larger Medium Speed Diesel generators<br />
require marine like lubricants with a high TBN.<br />
Mostly in a monograde SAE 40 with a total<br />
base number varying from 6 to 40. The oils<br />
should be compatible with different qualities of residual fuel, have an<br />
excellent thermal and oxidation stability and have a high load carrying<br />
capacity.<br />

2. Gears<br />
In both closed and open systems a variety of different lubricants is being used. Extreme<br />
pressure, reliability, consistency and performance are key factors the lubricant should comply<br />
to.<br />

3. Compressors<br />
One can encounter different compressors in the industry. Coolcompressors, reciprocating<br />
aircompressors and others. Depending on oil change interval, we can recommend different<br />
products lasting from 2.000 up to 10.000 hours.<br />

4. Chain saws<br />
Chain saws are mostly motored by a two stroke engine. Characteristic for 2-stroke<br />
engines is the combustion of a mixture of fuel and oil. Apart from its engine, the<br />
chain needs to be lubricated. Because of the spilling of the product, in many<br />
regions, a biodegradable product is prescribed.<br />

5. Hydraulics<br />
Hydraulics are one of the main mechanical devices used in the forestry.<br />
Because of the outdoor use and the frequent spilling of the hydraulic fluids<br />
used, in many countries, bio degradable products are prescribed. Suggested<br />
range of products is suitable for all hydraulic applications of high pressure, low<br />
temperature, high temperature – suitable for the use according to most<br />
legislations worldwide.<br />

6. Greases<br />
Extreme pressure, water contamination, dust, shocks, high loads. Mines are a<br />
beautiful playground for grease developers. Although in many cases a Lithium EP<br />
Grease would be good enough for the job, either a Lithium Complex or a Polyurea<br />
Grease is recommended. Circumstances can change rapidly. Do define properties<br />
vis-à-vis dust or water is not very difficult but what if the dust gets wet and<br />
sticky? Better safe than sorry and apply a grease of which one is sure it will do the<br />
job under all possible circumstances.<br />
