There will be a team of four instructors conducting the long day course, with back up online assistance and follow up help via multiple means to help ensure proper and full training. This is a unique opportunity for Kevin’s Community Center to have a nationally recognized program agree to sponsor a program tailored to our current and future needs. This is a first step to afford KCC the opportunity to build capacity to respond to the dire counseling and support needs of our community not only in the wake of the 12/14 tragedy that occurred in our community at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, but also for the long aftermath of need that has become apparent as the residents of Newtown struggle to recover from this tragedy. The strength of Newtown in this crisis has been its unification as a community to help one another toward the path to recovery. The positive prognosis for our Town rests in our ability to provide these long-range support services from within the Town, with minimal reliance on service providers who are not members of this close-knit small town community. Massachusetts General has secured a grant from one of its major donors to cover most of the costs to initiate this program at KCC in Newtown. Additional funds will be needed to supplement this donation for the initial implementation and to ensure the ongoing training and continued capacity building so that our community can be well-prepared to address its needs on a long-term basis. KCC, because of its long standing reputation of providing free high quality health care to the uninsured and underinsured in Newtown, is well poised to be the “go to” place in Newtown for residents seeking counseling and support services to address their grief and stress associated with the trauma that they have experienced.
