The Corporate Securities Moot
On March 2 nd and 3 rd, 2012 for the
fourth consecutive year, Robson
Hall participated in the Corporate
Securities Moot. Participation
was at an all time high with
thirteen teams participating at
the Moot this year. The Robson
Hall team sponsored by the
Desautels Centre was comprised
of third year students, Katrina
Broughton and Brandon Trask,
and second-year students
Marlena Bova and Spencer
Chimuk. The team represented
the school ably and well, and
put in tremendous practice
and research time in so doing.
Spencer Chimuk was singled out
by judges and recognized as the
third-best oralist among the 52
mooters at the moot.
One of the highlights of the
trip was the fact that both the
students and the coaches were
able to dine with Dr. Marcel
A. Desautels just prior to the
opening of the competition.
With his trademark warmth
and humility, Dr. Desautels

reason and passion, as passion without
reason is bound to fail, no matter how
emotive, and reason without passion
runs the risk of not being sufficiently
persuasive.”

held the students’ attention
as he recounted many of his
experiences as both lawyer and
businessperson, both in his
native Winnipeg and his current
place of abode, Toronto. This
encounter was perceived by all
as a wonderful kickoff to the
competitive weekend.
The Laskin Moot
Our Laskin team, comprised of
Meghan Menzies, Stephen Myher,
Patricia Doyle and Bruce Haddad
and coached by Professor Gerald
Heckman, performed very well at
the 27 th annual Laskin Moot Court
Competition, held in Moncton,
New Brunswick. Robson Hall
students received high praise from
judges for their appellate advocacy
skills. Highlights included speaking
with Justice Binnie and mooting
before panels of distinguished
lawyers and judges, including
former justice of the Federal Court
of Appeal Robert Décary, Federal
Court Justice Yves de Montigny
and Ontario Superior Court Justice
Michael Quigley.
