2011 - 2012 Event Highlights The Honourable Chief Justice Scott Welcomes the Class of 2014 Left: Chief Justice Scott, Law Student Derek Deacon, and Dr. Lorna Turnbull A tradition has been established at Robson Hall. For the second year in a row, a formal ceremony and reception took place to welcome first-year students to the Faculty of Law. The importance of professionalism and ethics were the subject of a special address from Chief Justice Scott, who spoke on the importance of integrity and the duty to uphold and protect the public interest. David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, along with members of the legal profession were in attendance. Each student was presented with a personalized copy of the Canadian Bar Association Code of Professional Conduct. A reception, sponsored by the Manitoba Bar Association and the Law Society of Manitoba, followed. Student Derek Deacon said that he felt incredibly privileged to be studying law at Robson Hall. “The welcome ceremony and reception were exciting, engaging, and informative.” Earlier in the day, students were welcomed to the study of law by Elder Shane Patterson of the Southern First Nations Network of Care, who spoke about the importance of being true to oneself and performed a traditional blessing. Students also heard welcome messages from Dean Lorna Turnbull and Associate Dean Lisa Fainstein. FRENCH LANGUAGE GRANT ANNOUNCED This year, Robson Hall received an Access to Justice in both Official Languages Support Fund grant from the Federal Department of Justice. It will be part of a project called “Renforcement de la capacité de la faculté de droit de l’Université du Manitoba d’offrir aux étudiants en droit une formation en français” (“Building the capacity of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law to provide law students with education in French”). The grant includes funds to support law professor Gerald Heckman’s course, Français Juridique, as well as a new course on minority language rights. In addition, French-language opportunities will be introduced in the first year of the law program by adding a French section to the currently offered judge shadowing and legal methods courses. Internships for upper-year students to serve French-speaking clients will also be developed. The grant also includes funds to conduct a survey and for advertising. Robson Hall’s partners for this grant include the Association des juristes d’expression française du Manitoba inc., Centre canadien de français juridique, La Fédération des associations de juristes d’expression française de common law inc. (FAJEF), and the Government of Manitoba’s Secrétariat aux affaires francophones. Robson Hall’s Bilingual Students Group is also key to the success of these new initiatives. 5 ROBSON HALL ALUMNI REPORT
