research our faculty members are working on are
the foundations of this law school and are the
means through which we are making a difference
in our communities, whether we find ourselves in
Manitoba, across Canada, or around the world. Law is
a powerful tool in creating the societies we live in and
at the University of Manitoba, we educate lawyers and
leaders who are equal to the task of addressing the
challenges we face. In this issue, you will read of work
being done through the Centre for Human Rights
Research on water as a basic human right. This is an
issue of vital and daily importance here in Manitoba,
as well as in many areas of the world. Those of you
interested in business will find an article on how our
students are learning about corporate governance
while serving philanthropic organizations in Winnipeg.
You will also read profiles of alumni who have taken
their legal education into careers serving their fellow
citizens as a firefighter, a member of the armed forces
and as counsel to international tribunals to name but
a few non-traditional career paths. Alumni giving
back is the theme in the donor profile of a U of M
couple who are devoted to seeing a positive future
for Aboriginal students and their communities. Our
students are also out there, doing remarkable things
in our community here in Winnipeg, and across the
world in a United Nations Internship in Montenegro.
This is a dynamic Faculty where change is a daily
reality. While many of the excellent professors
you may have enjoyed during your studies are
still leading Socratic discussions, others have
retired and many new colleagues have joined the
faculty, bringing exciting ideas for research and
new perspectives on legal education. Just as the
profession across the country is reviewing how it
functions in an era when many other jurisdictions are
losing the privilege of self-regulation, law schools in
Canada are now facing increasing scrutiny from the
Federation of Law Societies of Canada. All of these
factors have contributed to our desire to consider
how best we at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of
Law can prepare the lawyers and leaders we need for
Canada in the 21 st century.
