37 ROBSON HALL ALUMNI REPORT
Paradise Found Saul Froomkin - Class of 1960 In the sub-tropical climate of Bermuda, where weather reporting is all but redundant and the deep-sea fishing is always good and often spectacular, Saul Froomkin, struck the perfect work/life balance long before the concept became mainstream. Most fish tales are prone to exaggeration, but Froomkin’s is definitely the real deal. “The truth of the matter is I came here for the fishing,” says the 76-year-old, who still begins his full day at 8 a.m. as a senior litigator at the ISIS Law Group office, leaving at 6 p.m. and working weekends when his case load is heavy. “I had in mind to come here for three years or so and 34 years later I’m still here. I can’t say it was done with much foresight.” “It’s as close to paradise as I’ll ever see. The island is beautiful and the weather is temperate. It doesn’t snow, it doesn’t freeze. Fishing is wonderful and the people are great. What else can you ask for? Oh, did I mention? There’s no income tax!” Obviously a man who plays hard, Froomkin brings that same degree of focus and stamina to his professional life. Moving to Bermuda in 1978, Froomkin served as Solicitor General until 1981 and Attorney General from 1981 to 1991, when he joined Mello Jones & Martin. Currently, Froomkin is involved with an attempted murder appeal; he is also working on an administrative law matter and he is handling a huge trust case from the UK. “Just a nice complex mix of pretty well everything involving corporate, commercial, and civil litigation, insolvency, insurance, and administrative law.” Reflecting on 50 years of legal practice, Froomkin says, “I’m really thankful for the UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA, FACULTY OF LAW robsonhall.ca 38
