Class Notes 1968 Judge John Guy, Manitoba Provincial Court, Class of 1968, was the recipient of the Manitoba Bar Association 2011-2012 Distinguished Service Award. 1970 R.M. (Bob) Kozminski was the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of Winnipeg in May 2012. 1973 Bruce A. MacFarlane, Q.C. was featured as a Distinguished Alumni in the Faculty of Law’s 2011-2012 promotional publication. 1975 The Honourable Justice Freda Steel was featured as a Distinguished Alumni in the Faculty of Law’s 2011-2012 promotional publication. Justice Steel was also the recipient of the Manitoba Bar Association’s 2011- 2012 Isabel Ross (MacLean) Hunt Award. Paul Brett was appointed a deputy judge of the Small Claims Court of the Ontario Superior Court Justice, Northwest Region. 1976 Philip D. Backman was appointed a Queen’s Counsel for the Province of Alberta. George Orle, Q.C. was the recipient of the Manitoba Bar Association’s 2011-2012 Pro Bono Award. 1977 William (Bill) Sumerlus was appointed the regional director of the Manitoba Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Sumerlus has worked for CUPE as legal counsel and as a negotiator for over 20 years. 1979 The Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, Class of 1979 (2002 LL.D.), was featured as a Distinguished Alumni in the Faculty of Law’s 2011-2012 promotional publication. Irene Hamilton was appointed Director of Justice Innovation for Justice Manitoba on January 4, 2012. 1981 Kimberly Prost was featured as a Distinguished Alumni in the Faculty of Law’s 2011-2012 promotional publication. Thomas G. Frohlinger was featured as a Distinguished Alumni in the Faculty of Law’s 2011- 2012 promotional publication. 1982 Lieutenant-Colonel Randall Callan was appointed to the B.C. Provincial Court in February 2012. Lt.-Col. Callan was formerly a legal officer with the Office of the Judge Advocate General and also served as the Assistant Judge Advocate General Atlantic Region. 1984 1986 Lee Stuesser was appointed the Founding Dean of Law, at the new Faculty of Law at Lakehead University. Jon Sigurdson was the recipient of the Manitoba Bar Association’s 2011- 2012 Section Activity Award. 1995 Gary Gervais, founder and president of Heartland International English School, located in Winnipeg Manitoba, graduated with an MBA in May 2012 from the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba. Allison Neapole, has for the last five years been working in Geneva Switzerland as in-house counsel at Addax Petroleum, an oil and gas exploration and production company. Allison says, “Working in an industry with finite resources and geopolitical sensitivities is certainly challenging! I firmly believe that the role of in-house counsel is that of the conscience of the organization. I ensure that my company can conduct the business it wants to in a way that is morally and ethically sound.” Allison says she enjoys living in the small but exciting city of Geneva “It’s surrounded by mountains, and since I love to ski and hike, that’s a bonus! Darren is now Associate General Legal Counsel at the Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo), where he manages internal and external legal services. When not working, Darren can be found enjoying the day with his wife and daughter. Amanda Balasubramanian has been a partner with Torys LLP in Toronto since 2007. Amanda’s practice focuses on debt financing: corporate liquidity financing, acquisition finance, leverage finance, and high yield debt, domestically, internationally and globally. She is also co-chair of the Student Recruitment Committee. “I really enjoy being part of the student recruitment process. We meet so many wonderful, talented, and interesting candidates from all over Canada. At Torys, we take a long-term view to recruiting so when we are interviewing students for summer positions, we are effectively recruiting our future partners. This is immensely important to the firm as a whole and every recruitment season we have more than 100 Torys lawyers that participate in the process. Casey Chisick is a partner in the Entertainment Law and Intellectual Property practices and co-leader of the firm’s Fashion Industry Practice Group. He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Certified Specialist in Intellectual Property (Copyright). 1998 Lisa Stiver, partner at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP, was named a 2011 Lexpert Rising Star, a Leading Lawyer Under 40, by Lexpert Magazine. 2001 Cynthia Lau, MPI, was the recipient of the Manitoba Bar Association’s 2011-2012 Headnotes & Footnotes Award. 2005 Dr. Mosope Fagbongbe (2005 LL.M.), obtained her Ph.D. in international human rights law, with particular focus on the African Regional Human Rights System, from the University of British Columbia in November 2010. Dr. Fagbongbe is currently a Research Fellow, Legislative Drafting, at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in Lagos, Nigeria.
