Alumni News HOMECOMING 2011 & REUNION CELEBRATIONS Homecoming 2011 was a great success! A variety of events took place throughout the University, including our own well-attended Law Open House reception on Friday, September 16 th at Robson Hall. The reception celebrated the 40 th anniversary of the University Law Centre, the 50 th anniversary of the Class of 1961, and the 25 th anniversary of the Class of 1986. Left: the Hon. Howard Pawley, and Professor Roland Penner at the University’s Homecoming Alumni Dinner Professor David Deutscher gave an eloquent speech on the importance of the University Law Centre, thanking the dedicated student volunteers who have, over the years, helped to provide so many people with access to justice. Roberta Turner, Joanne Parisian, and Diane Hartley, the Centre’s Administrators, were honoured for their years of exemplary service. Peter Tonge presented certificates of appreciation on behalf of Legal Aid Manitoba, the Province of Manitoba, Manitoba Justice, and the University of Manitoba. It was wonderful to welcome back Al McGregor, Q.C., class of ‘67, the first Supervisor of the Law Centre. Left: Lisa Fainstein, Associate Dean, and Mr. Robert Gabor The Class of 1961 continued its 50 th anniversary celebrations with a dinner at the Manitoba Club on Friday evening and the University’s Homecoming Dinner on Saturday evening, during which the Hon. Howard Pawley P.C., a member of the class of ’61, was awarded the University’s Distinguished Service Award. As Roland Penner recounted, “The highlight of this coming together was the Friday dinner attended by nine members of the class including Howard Pawley. Memory and mirth followed the dinner as each attendee was called on to reminisce. Although likely the last reunion of the Law Class of 1961, it will live long in the memory of all of us.” The Class of 1986 continued its celebration over the course of the Homecoming weekend. Bill Height and Fia Goswin hosted a party on Friday evening at their home. A casual dinner at Dacquisto Restaurant on Kenaston Boulevard, followed on Left: Homecoming volunteers Nicole Smith, student, Gail Mackisey, Library Supervisor, Ms. Roberta Turner, former Administrator, University Law Centre; and Roberta’s Daughter. 99 ROBSON HALL ALUMNI REPORT
