BDL Group.
Rainbow had initially been
appointed to provide bio-hazard
cleans for the BDL Group hotels
including the Ramada in East
Horsley & Sutton Coldfield as well
as Ashton Hall in Sheffield. BDL
Hotels also include well know
brands such as Holiday Inn Express
& Crowne Plaza and are a large UK
wide hotel chain.

Hard floor and carpet cleaning were part of the
cleaning specification for the Princes Street Suites

Ross Donaghey, Regional Sales Manager
for Rainbow Scotland & Northern England,
and Scott Wilson from Rainbow’s
Edinburgh branch met Edinburgh Suites’
Operations Manager Helen Gallagher and
conducted a thorough site survey. Helen
had a difficult stain that had resisted all
previous attempts to clean, but the stain
was successfully removed during a test.
The team also cleaned the carpets, rugs
and restored the floor tiling in the kitchen
of one of the suites leading Helen to
comment upon inspection:-
“Your team was in today for the trial and they
were fantastic – it looks as if we have a new
carpet in the bedroom that they cleaned.
The tiles have turned out extremely well and
your technician, Kirk Nisbet, was extremely
professional and efficient”.
Rainbow have now started work within
the 74 bedrooms and 37 living/kitchen
areas and the initial programme sees work
commence every day for a 5 week period.

Delivering fast

seen the value of Rainbow’s cleaning expertise in a variety of instances over the past 10 years.
UK hospitals are benefitting from
a two hour emergency response
service from deep cleaning
specialist Rainbow International.
Rainbow International provides a
comprehensive service including
anti viral and bacteria removal
services from over 90 branches
across the UK.
The company is engaged by several
NHS Trusts carrying out deep
cleaning of operating theatres and
hospital wards often working in
partnership with NHS cleaning staff.
Rainbow has invested in the latest
technology in respect of equipment
and developing anti microbial
cleaning solutions giving it the
capability to handle any situation in
any location.
“We have a fantastic array of
equipment including fogging, steam
cleaning, air managers to kill airborne
pathogens, ultrasonic cleaning and
ozone chambers available and we

within two hours of receiving
instructions”, said Managing Director

“As well as being responsive we are
also extremely flexible and will adopt
the preferred cleaning solutions and
techniques requested by individual
NHS Trusts”.
An example of this is in Shropshire
where Rainbow’s Telford branch
has been working with the Telford
and Shrewsbury NHS Trust for 10
years.

Deep cleaning in operating theatres
is carried out by hand using
spray on wipe off solutions for
equipment, floors and walls with
post cleaning testing carried out by
NHS staff.
“Steam cleaning is often used for
cleaning and decontaminating day
wards and sanitary ware. These are
extremely thorough cleans where
every surface and piece of equipment
is cleaned”.
Phil Else added: “When hospitals
have an emergency - be it
contamination by superbugs or
accidental spills - they need a fast
response and that is why we have
invested in highly trained staff and the
latest equipment to deliver a two hour
maximum response time anywhere in
the UK”.

The clean up operation collected over
1000 needles, and allowed the surveyors
access to make their inspection prior to the
demolition and rebuilding of the properties.

Huw Smith, who runs Rainbow’s local office in
Cardiff had previously provided some cleaning
work for the Association and when asked if
he had bio-hazard training, Huw’s experience
provided the perfect solution to the problem.
All of Huw’s technicians are accredited to the
Response standard, which is approved by the
Ministry of Defence, and he had 4 of his team
working in the properties for a week to make
them safe for the surveyors’ inspection.
Making the property safe included installing
temporary lighting, placing temporary floorboards,
sweeping the internal and external properties
for needles, removing all rubbish and debris to
approved waste sites.

Considerable cleaning outside...
United Welsh Housing Association had
a major problem, when a series of their
properties which had been derelict and had
run into a major state of disrepair, were due
for inspection by the surveyors prior to them
being rebuilt.
The row of 5 terrace houses presented a serious
hazard area. All the internal rooms were cluttered
with so much debris that included needles and
broken glass, much of which was hidden in bags and
buried in the overgrown garden areas. Additionally,
the properties had been broken into and had all
the floorboards removed so that the thieves could
remove all the metal and copper beneath.
Barry James, Development Surveyor from United
Welsh Housing was delighted with the work done
by the Rainbow team.
He commented:- “We intended to survey the building
however, prior to carrying out the survey we needed
to ensure the building was safe. We asked Rainbow
to carry out the works as they had previously worked
for us.
I was very satisfied with the work they carried out.
They were very thorough, professional, and completed
the work to time and budget. They found and disposed
of far more needles than anticipated and continually
updated me on the progress of works. The significant
number of needles they found justified using Rainbow’s
specialist knowledge. They also provided lighting and
temporary works to enable the survey to be carried out.
I am glad I used Rainbow and would recommend them”.

Facelift for
Cullompton
College
Cullompton Community College, based near
Exeter was given a major facelift recently
with the jet washing of the front, side and
rear building elevations, which included the
main school and library buildings.
A pole mounted, high level cleaning system was
also utilised which allowed high level cleaning in
awkward and hard to reach areas from ground
floor level.
Rainbow’s local office based in Exeter was
chosen for the project following an extensive
examination of Rainbow’s Health and Safety
accreditation for working at height and use of
mechanical lifting equipment.
The schools appearance was greatly enhanced
by the clean which was performed during the
holiday period and to very strict deadlines.
The clean also provided an added bonus for the
College – a total of over 30 footballs, tennis balls,
rugby balls and basketballs were retrieved from
the roof by Rainbow’s technicians!
The building is 2 storeys and
was accessed through the
use of scissor lifts and cherry
pickers, to enable the pre-cast
facia to be thoroughly cleaned.

Drying expertise provides
continuity of education
When Castercliff Community Primary
School near Burnley suffered a major
escape of water, the pupils continuity of
education was under serious threat.
During routine maintenance to the plumbing
system, the bleed valves on all the radiators
were opened throughout the building as the
plumbers believed that the water supply was
turned off. However, the stop cock valve was
not fully closed, the system was left in this
state over the weekend and water had leaked
out of all the radiators onto the floors in all
rooms, affecting the carpets and in some
rooms affecting the building structure.
A total of 14 rooms were badly contaminated
but Rainbow’s local office uplifted and
disposed of all carpets beyond economic
repair, installed a drying regime, and had the
entire property back to pre-incident condition
in time for the pupils to start their new term.
The schools Site Supervisor, Ernest Thornton
was delighted with the speedy service the
local branch supplied.

School restored
following arson attack
When Stonedyke Primary School, near
Glasgow suffered an arson attack,
Rainbow International was called to help
return the building to its pre-incident
condition.
The attack had left its mark on the nursery
part of the school building which dictated
that a thorough clean, sanitising and
air management programme had to be
implemented to get the building back up and
running.
Chemical sponging to clean soot and smoke
residue to all the affected walls, ceilings
and painted surfaces was swiftly followed
by fogging and the installation of a series
of Air Storm TM systems. Air Storm is an Air
Management system which will deodorise and
sanitise the air and remove all airborne smoke
particles and traces of contamination.
In addition to the building restoration, full
contents restoration was part of the instruction
which included many of the schools toys and
furnishings, and a full laundry service.
The instruction had come from City
Building which is one of Scotland’s largest
construction companies. City Building was
established from the former Building Services
Department of Glasgow City Council, and
the local branch of Rainbow have worked
closely with them on several other restoration
projects.
The restoration project was completed
within a week and handed over to the client’s
complete satisfaction.

Damp Diagnosis &
Mould Remediation
Rainbow International are one of the UK’s
leading experts in diagnosing the causes
of damp and condensation, which can
lead to mould. A full diagnostic process is
combined with a programme to eradicate
the mould & damp problem.
Damp and mould can lead to a series of respiratory diseases
Mould is classed as a category one
risk to health, which is the same
class as asbestos, as assessed
under the Housing Health and
Safety Rating System 2000. The
Environmental Protection Act (1990)
classifies mould as a statutory
nuisance that must be treated.
The Rainbow system
incorporates a 3 stage process
when considering Damp and
Condensation issues in any
property -
Step 1 - Risk Assessment
Prior to any survey Rainbow
International will carry out a full
Risk Assessment including an
assessment of ACM (Asbestos
Containing Materials).
Step 2 - The Survey
Rainbow’s fully experienced
technical team will then carry
out a survey on the property, to
identify possible causes of damp
penetration and condensation inside
the property.

External Survey
The general state of repair will be
thoroughly assessed, including:-
n Brickwork, rendering & mortar
n Roof - condition of roof tiles or
flat roofs
n Downpipes & guttering
n Flashing around chimney stacks
and in adjoining elements
n Damp Proof Membrane - any
evidence of missing, breached
or faulty DPM
n Waste pipes
n Outside doors
n Window units (paying particular
attention to double glazed units
and any lack of ventilation)
n Airbricks - check for blockages
n Measurement of moisture,
humidity and temperature in all
building materials with hi tech
measurement equipment. This
will confirm the conditions in
the property as either damp and
at risk of mould contamination,
or dry and comfortable living
conditions.
Internal Surveys
Internally, Rainbow will check
for visible damp conditions and
evidence of mould contamination.
Damp and mould will often be
concealed within the building
structure - for example in cavities,
under floorboards and behind
skirting boards.
Wherever mould is evident, there
is usually much more of it hidden
within the building structure.
Rainbow employs a wide range of
sophisticated technical equipment
to identify and analyse the
contamination in these hidden
areas, such as Endoscopes and
Borescopes. These can have
inspection cameras attached which
allows a detailed internal visual
inspection in hard to access areas,
without major disruption or damage
to the building and its contents/
decor.
Step 3 - Remedial Action
Following the survey a full report
will be issued to the landlord,
homeowner, plumber or other
instructing party. This will provide
a complete analysis of the causes
of damp and mould, and a course
of remedial action will be proposed
which will eradicate the problem.
Upon approval of the summary of
works Rainbow will commence the
treatment, which depending upon
the nature and severity of the damp
and mould will include the following
treatments:-
n Washing, spraying or fogging
of the affected areas with
an appropriate anti-microbial
substance to sanitise the
contaminated surfaces.
n Removal of plaster and wood
where contamination is severe
or dry/wet rot has taken hold.
n Air Manager – an air sterilisation
unit which will kill all airborne
spores released from mould
Mould can thrive in a damp environment
infestation can be deployed if
necessary.
n Installation of drying equipment
regime – a combination of
dehumidifiers, airmovers &
heaters will be deployed to
ensure moisture and relative
humidity levels are introduced
that are consistent with healthy
living conditions.
n Monitoring of drying regime – to
guarantee suitable damp free
conditions are maintained.
n Installation of appropriate
ventilation systems (if
appropriate).
n Stripping out and replacing of
units and building materials that
have been affected beyond
repair by the damp or mould.
n Redecorating following cleaning
and sanitisation.
n Sign off/handover - following
treatment and drying of a
property, a certificate will be
issued which will confirm the
home is conducive to a healthy
living environment and is free
from damp and mould.

Thermography - a simple and effective
process which allows the complex
analysis of building substrates
Rainbow currently has
40 separate branches
with technically qualified
teams in Thermography.
They provide this highly
specialist service as part
of their Leak Detection
programme.
Thermography promotes
cost effective
leak detection
Water leaks can be hard to trace, both
internally and externally. External leaks may
not cause disruption, but can dramatically
increase your water bills. Internal leaks, if
not identified and repaired can cause major
damage and destruction to a property.
Traditional methods of leak detection can involve
major, unnecessary excavations and upheaval,
with no guarantee that the leak will be found.
Using a combination of the latest technology our
expert systems can identify the location of a leak
quickly, precisely, with minimal damage and cost.
One such method is by Thermal Imaging, but
the process is prone to misinterpretation if the
user has not been adequately trained and is fully
qualified in its use.
Rainbow’s restoration and specialist cleaning
service is greatly enhanced by the value that
thermal imaging can bring to its portfolio. It is a
key tool in allowing the exact location of leaking
pipes, often buried deep within the building
structure, to be identified with precision. It can
also be used to identify pre-existing conditions
and allows excellent analysis protocols to apply
to their drying regimes.
Training Programme
Rainbow International has teamed up with
Infrared Building Solutions (IBS) to develop
an independent training package for thermal
imaging. IBS are the leading independent
trainer in the UK and Europe on thermography
specialising in building diagnostics.
The training programme devised by
IBS involves compulsory online training
prior to a two day intensive training course
at Rainbow International’s Head Office Training
Centre. Upon completion of the course
the delegates have to pass a closed book
examination. Finally the delegates have to submit
a complete report which is sent for independent
evaluation for validity and accuracy.
To ensure that Rainbow’s technicians remain
at the forefront of this technology they are also
subject to ongoing training and annual evaluation
to ensure standards and new technological
advances are maintained.

The facility in the west end of the city is
located across the road from the popular
Kelvin Grove Art Gallery. The landmark
multi-purpose venue is home to an indoor
sports arena which hosts international
events and also has gymnasium facilities.
Fire and water damage had affected Kelvin Hall, in Glasgow

Rainbow International were recently
instructed to restore a property and its
contents following major fire & flood damage
caused by the same incident.
Following a blaze at Kelvin Hall, one of Glasgow’s
biggest sports arenas, around 11 fire engines, a
forward control unit and several police vehicles
were promptly at the scene. Grey smoke could
be seen coming out of the side of the building
as firefighters ran hoses into all four sides of the
venue. The fire broke out in the building’s health
suite on the ground floor.
Although structural damage was limited, the
centre remained closed while the affected area
was cleaned and dried.
The work was secured through Glasgow City
Council who called Rainbow to visit site and
assess the damage, provide an estimate to
restore the fire and smoke contamination and
water damage to the buildings. Being aware that
the venue was in full use and that a snooker
legend event was set to take place in just 2
weeks time, Rainbow gave a guarantee that they
would have all restoration complete for the event.
Rainbow’s local office in Airdrie has an excellent
working relationship with Glasgow City Council
who have always been delighted with the
efficient service Rainbow had provided. They
were therefore more than happy for restoration to
commence on the buildings as soon as full access
was granted by the fire service.
Restoration was completed well within the
council’s deadline and subsequently Rainbow
contacted Kelvin Hall’s contents insurers,
submitted an estimate to restore the contents
which was duly accepted based on the excellent
work done previously on the buildings.
Ten firefighters with breathing equipment entered the building,
found the fire and put it out before it could spread. However,
a water main adjacent to the fire melted as a result of the
extreme heat and caused extensive water damage to the venue.

Team AON
choose Rainbow
Team AON wanted the radiators and oil
coolers from the race cars cleaned after each
race, specifically using the Ultrasonic process.
This process cleans delicate items very
efficiently by using pure water and absolutely
no chemicals, to ensure the integrity of the
parts being cleaned is maintained.
Paul Ryan was recently
contacted by Team AON, Arena
International Motorsport who
are based in Littlehampton and
who had searched the Internet
for a local company with an
Ultrasonic Cleaning System,
and found Rainbow’s local
branch.

International Motorsport.

Earle’s Littlehampton based Arena
International Motorsport has a long
history of success in touring cars.
Earle is one of the most respected
figures in the industry, having
created the Onyx Formula 1 Team
in the late 1980’s, which scored
points and finished on the podium
in its first season in Formula 1.
They are the first team to race the
new Global Ford Focus Touring
Car, which made its racing debut
at the first round of the 2011 BTCC
season at Brands Hatch.
To date Paul and his team have
cleaned a large number of
radiators and oil coolers and Paul is
expecting that the level of orders
will continue.

National Trust
in Rainbow!
Fire recently ravaged a historic Lakes house that was once the home of William
Wordsworth. Firefighters from five stations fought through the night to tackle
the huge blaze at Allen Bank, Grasmere.
The severity of the fire resulted in a major clean up operation
The fire, which started in the roof early one morning from a suspected electrical fault,
quickly consumed the first floor. Allen Bank was built in 1805 and given to the trust by
Canon Rawnsley in 1951, William Wordsworth lived there between 1808 and 1811.
Rainbow’s branch in Morecambe were instructed to strip out all the fire damaged
debris, clear the property of soot and smoke residue and protect the original
fireplaces and other unique features by building chipboard casing surrounds.

for Farmfoods
The floor was “the cleanest it’s ever
been” following Rainbow’s visit
A web site enquiry from Farmfoods in Scotland
recently resulted in some work for several of
Rainbow’s Scottish branches.
Following one clean of the whole store area the General
Manager for Farmfoods at the Dalkeith branch commented
“It’s the cleanest I’ve ever seen the floor”. Due to the
excellent results achieved at that branch Rainbow was
invited to tender for the cleaning and restoration services
for over 100 Farmfoods stores in Scotland.

promptly eradicated by using the soda blast cleaning system

Restored to former
glory following
years of neglect
The builders were planning
major refurbishment before
selling the properties on,
and instructed Rainbow
International’s Morecambe
branch to help.
When Robert Hughes Ltd bought an old Grade II listed building
known as the Hornby Hotel in Lancashire, they were also taking
on many years of “neglect”.
The property, an adjoining Inn and 6 domestic homes had been
unoccupied for years, left to the elements and were in a very poor
state of repair.
Because of the time the buildings had been open to the elements
they were soaking wet and had to be dried in sections which totalled
over 100 days of careful work to ensure the structural integrity was
not compromised.
The drying work had to be carefully planned in between the builders
and conservationists procedures. Following the extensive drying
regime Rainbow were also appointed to clean after the building
work had finished, supplying a “sparkle” clean prior to the properties
going onto the market.

brushes due to the very delicate nature and age of the sandstone façia

skies and light rain but by midday
the sun was shining and it made
for a very enjoyable day for all.
Diffusing
the problem
Rainbow International receives many unusual
requests from a wide range of industries.
They were instructed to clean several hundred light
diffusers for a Facility Management company in
London recently.
In order for the diffusers to be cleaned evenly and with
a totally streak free finish, a pure water system was
required as it removes all impurities from the water.
A different type of clean from the normal domestic or
commercial type, but one that shows the versatility
and the full nature of the comprehensive range of
services provided by Rainbow International.
