Limestone
Branch
Distillery
The Bourbon experience heightened h this year in the
City of Lebanon with the arrival of Limestone Branch
Distillery.
The distillery is located within minutes of downtown
on the Veterans Memorial Highway. Visitors can experience
the distilling process close-up. Guests who are 21 years
old or older may sample a taste of an authentic moonshine
recipe, or a variety of Limestone Branch’s uniquely Kentucky
small-batch products. The distillery offers tours Monday
through Saturday at the top of the hour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The distillery is open 360
days a year. It will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas
Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Easter. The distillery
tour is located under one roof and on a single floor, making it
easily accessible.
Brothers Steve and Paul Beam founded Limestone Branch
Distillery. They chose Lebanon and Marion County for many
reasons. Clearly, the location is very important, since Lebanon
is in the heart of Bourbon Country. The location also offers
an abundance of local grain and the presence of the essential
limestone water that is so necessary for their unique and personal
recipes. Most importantly, Steve and Paul’s great-great
grandfather, Joseph Washington Dant, began distilling sour
mash whiskey in 1836, only a few miles down the road. As
the operation grew, its management was taken over by their
great grandfather, W.W. Dant. W. W. was also a partner at that
time in the Smith and Smith Distillery in Loretto. After W. W.
passed away, John Proctor Dant, his brother, moved the Loretto
distillery to Louisville. The Dant family was responsible for
many early Kentucky bourbon brands.
At the same time, just over the county line in Nelson County,
their other great grandfather, Minor Case Beam, was busily
producing Old Trump and T.J. Pottinger brands of fine sour
mash and rye whiskeys. Minor Case was the eldest son of
Joseph M. Beam. Joseph M. was grandson of Jacob Boehm,
who in 1788 passed through the Cumberland Gap to arrive
in Kentucky. Family lore says that he came with a pot still
strapped to his back. Jacob promptly changed his surname to
Beam and sold his first barrel of whiskey in 1795.
Even though prohibition ended the family’s ownership of
the distillery, grandfather Guy S. Beam carried on the family’s
heritage as a Master Distiller for many of Kentucky’s finest
distilleries.
Under the guidance of their father, the brothers have reconstructed
a small distillery reminiscent of an era gone by. Here,
a 150-gallon hand hammered copper pot still is used to produce
small one-barrel batches of the finest spirits possible. This
offers an experience for the visitor as unique as the distillery’s
products.
Come enjoy after-hours evening tours of the distillery featuring
paddleboat fun on Limestone Lake. Plan a picnic or join
them their regular lakeside barbeque events. Call 270.699.9004
for more information.
bypass (Veterans Memorial Highway)
Marion County’s own Ernie Brown Jr., better
known as the Turtleman, has taken
Hollywood by storm with his turtle catching
talents.
He has his own television show, “Call of the Wildman,”
on the Animal Planet, and he has appeared on various
television shows, including The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno!
Since the age of seven, Brown has been helping
neighbors, farmers and friends rid their ponds of turtles
that pose a threat to livestock or produce. He learned the
trade from his father and uncle and he’s been drawing a
crowd ever since.
But, according to Brown, he’s doesn’t catch turtles for
fame or fortune.
“I’m doing it for good,” Brown said during an interview
with The Lebanon Enterprise. “I’m not looking for
money, just happiness.”
Marion County Quilt Trail
On this breathtaking tour, visitors meander through
some of the most beautiful countryside in Kentucky.
Currently, there are 60 quilt block paintings hanging
on barns and other structures throughout Marion
County. A free colorful brochure with the trail map, descriptions
and GPS locations of the quilts is available at the visitors’
center, or call 270.692.0021 to request one.
Many of the quilts portray unique stories and paint a colorful
legacy to each family’s heritage. Several have been featured
in Suzi Parron’s book, “Barn Quilts and the American Quilt
Trail Movement,” along with the fascinating accompanying
tales. Take a day out to travel the entire route. Pay attention.
You’ll get a good feel for local heritage and enjoy the visually
stimulating look of the pastures, forests, country roads and
knoblands.
The Marion County Quilt Trail is a portion of the “Clothesline
of Quilts” trail that runs throughout Kentucky, Ohio and
Tennessee. It has 60 barn quilts making it one of the largest
community trails in the state.
Start your tour at the visitors’ center at Centre Square in
historic downtown Lebanon. Colorful brochure maps of the
trail with directions and GPS coordinates are available there,
as well as a beautifully photographed 2012 calendar of the barn
quilts created by the Marion County Extension Office.
Centre Square is the visitor center in downtown.
Birth of the "Clothesline of Quilts" trail
A tri-state effort among Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee was created
to draw tourists off the interstates and into rural areas to
experience the region's unique culture.
Called "Clothesline of Quilts," the project involves painting quilt
squares and murals of rural life on barns and other structures
along roadways throughout rural areas.
The project began in Ohio when Ohio Arts Council member
Donna Sue Groves painted a quilt square on a barn in honor of
her mother, a lifelong quilter. She raised funds to paint 20 squares
in Monroe County, Ohio. Kentucky and Tennessee joined the project
to create the "Clothesline of Quilts" driving trail.
“To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for
his widow, and his orphan.” - Abraham Lincoln, Second
Inaugural Address - 1865
The Union dead from the Battle of Perryville were
the first to be buried in what would later become the
Lebanon National Cemetery.
Official records indicate the U.S. government first
obtained the land for a cemetery in 1862 but it was not designated
a national cemetery until 1867. The original interments
were the scattered remains of Union soldiers from Lebanon
and the surrounding countryside. There were 865 total
original interments including 281 unknowns. The original
triangular tract is bounded by a stonewall and it contains an
1870s lodge occupied by the superintendent and the remains
of a rostrum.
In September 1861, Union Col. John M. Harlan from
Springfield, Ill. established Camp Crittenden at Lebanon and
began recruiting the 10th Kentucky Infantry regiment. From
November of that year, Lebanon had become the primary
staging center for Union Gen. George H. Thomas’ Mill Spring
camp. The town remained an important Union supply depot
during the Civil War, as well as a major center for Union
hospitals.
Even after the fighting moved south during the last two
years of the war, at least one military hospital continued to
operate in town. During the same period, Lebanon was a
major recruiting camp for “colored troops.” More than 2,053
men were recruited, the overwhelming majority of whom had
been slaves in the region.
The cemetery was placed on the National Register of
Historic Places in 1975. It is considered by Civil War historians
to be one of the most important burial places in the state.
Situated on 15 acres, the cemetery currently serves nearly
Historic Highway U.S. 68...
Historic Highway U.S. 68 cuts a path right through the center of
Lebanon and serves as its Main Street. Stretching from Paducah to
Maysville, U.S. 68 is the mother of all Kentucky's historic highways,
which were once major thoroughfares linking small towns across
the state.
Because of interstates and parkways, many travelers bypass these
comfortable and educational routes, never realizing what treasures
they are missing.
Lebanon is the epicenter of Historic Highway U.S. 68, not only for
its location but for its scenic beauty and unique dining and shopping
experiences along the way.
This portion of U.S. 68 was the trail used by such historic figures as
Andrew Jackson, Jane Todd Crawford and General Lafayette and it
includes, at one end, the Muldraugh Hill range, once named a Top
10 fall drive in a national poll. At the other end, undulating farmland
with crops, swaying hayfields, old barns and grazing livestock
give it a postcard feel.
In between is downtown Lebanon with its Civil War sites and historic
buildings, great Kentucky cuisine with a local flair, antique
stores, eclectic boutiques and southern hospitality at every stop.
Travelers can spend a day or week on Historic Highway U.S. 68, rediscovering
the interesting rural communities that give Kentucky
its unique taste.
Historic Highway U.S. 68 is also home of 400 Miles of Antiques,
Collectibles & Stuff held in June each year and portions of the
Marion County Quilt Trail.
In 1785, a "league" of 60 families was formed in Maryland,
all Catholics, and mostly from St. Mary's County, each one
of whom pledged to emigrate to Kentucky within a specified
time. Their primary purpose of settling together was
to secure as soon as possible the advantages of a pastorate and
a church.
Twenty-five families left Maryland early in 1785 and reached
Kentucky before the end of spring. Father M. Whelan was
assigned to Kentucky and reached the Pottinger's Creek settlement
in the early summer of 1787 and remained until the spring
of 1790. Six months later, the Rev. William de Rohan followed
and it was he who built the first Holy Cross Church in 1792,
the first Catholic church erected in the state. The Rev. Stephen
Theodore Badin arrived in Kentucky in 1795. The Rev. Charles
Nerinckx arrived in Kentucky in July of 1805.
After the establishment of the Diocese of Bardstown, April 8,
1808, and the arrival of Bishop Flaget, the mission territory was
divided up into other parishes and priests were assigned to them.
In the fall of 1812, Nerinckx was called to the temporary pastorship
of the Holy Cross congregation. For several Sundays, he
referred to the matter of a more suitable accommodation for their
Lord and Master than the log structure that had served this purpose
for more than 30 years. One Sunday morning, he astonished
his listeners by telling them that he had fixed the following day
for the beginning of the new church. He acknowledged that few
among them were able to contribute large sums of money but all
could give a little and most of them could give the labor of their
hands to the undertaking. He invited everyone to come early the
next morning with whatever tools and working stock they possessed.
Timbers were felled and shaped by hand implements into girders,
joists and rafters. Clay and sand were hauled for the making of
bricks. According to Nerinckx's correspondence, the building was
under roof by December of 1823 and must have been completed
soon afterwards. Nerinckx left the Holy Cross congregation in the
spring of 1824 and died August 12, 1824 in St. Genevieve, Mo.
The Record, the Archdiocese of Louisville's Catholic newspaper,
stated in February 1879 that a new rectory and school was
built at Holy Cross, Kentucky. The school burned Feb. 14, 1958
and a new one was built.
The Holy Cross school was served by the Mount St. Joseph
Ursuline Sisters from 1914 until 1977. The Marion County Board
of Education closed the school in May 1984.
The old Sisters home was torn down around 1962, at which
time a new brick home was built. After the Sisters left, Father
Patrick Warren, pastor, moved from the old rectory to the brick
home in 1978.
Historic Penn's Store
Lebanon is the gateway to Historic Penn's Store,
located in the small hamlet of Gravel Switch. The
store has been designated a Kentucky Historical
Landmark. Opened in 1845, it is the oldest country
store in America continuously operated by the same family. It
offers a unique step back in time.
Historic Penn's Store has been in the Penn family since
1850, and has become a popular site for visitors seeking living
history. The spirit of the store remains today much as it has
throughout its past 150-plus years, although most recently it
has been damaged by floodwaters and is currently undergoing
restoration. It will be closed for business during this time,
though progress can be viewed on site.
When restoration concludes, counters and glass showcases
much as they were at the turn of the century will be on display
once more. You will be able to see large spike nails in the ceiling
where rolls of bologna and salt-cured country ham once
hung. Dried herbs from the proprietor's herb garden will be for
sale as well as groceries, sandwiches and dry goods as it always
has in the past. There will also be t-shirts, caps, handmade
crafts, and specialty items for gifts and mementos.
Historic Penn's Store has been featured in many magazine
and newspaper articles, some of which emphasized the annual
events held there. The largest event is the Great Outhouse
Blowout, a celebration of the old-fashioned facility, complete
with outhouse racing, which featured a visit from Ernie
"Turtleman" Brown Jr. this past year! The store was used as a
backdrop for a Playboy magazine shoot and was featured on
Animal Planet!
Directions
With a growing line-up of
Plantation Club and Kitty Kat Club,
nightlife has returned to the beautiful,
historic downtown and there is a special
event of some kind going on almost
keeps a steady beat when it comes to
fine food and drink. There is an eclectic
array of dining options and musical
performances regularly but also theatre,
comedians and more and local restaurants
mixed drinks to imported and domestic
wines. Alcohol, package and by the
drink, can be purchased on weekdays,
Saturdays and on Sundays after 1 p.m.
bands, acoustic performances and vocalists
at Chasers, Willie A's on Depot
and Live on Main to karaoke, Comedy
Caravan routines, rock and R&B bands
and national recording artists at McB's.
Cardinal Den offers music and dancing
each weekend and Los Mariachi's features
lineup of family events that include the Kentucky Bluegrass
Music Kickoff, celebrating the state's official music, Country
100.9 Battle of the Bands, Marion County Ham Jam and
Motherhouse also hosts free performing arts events routinely.
The Stillhouse Restaurant on Main Street features a twostory
art gallery of ever-changing items from local artisans,
including quilts, painted barrelheads, photography and more.
remind of your visit to Lebanon. Limestone Branch Distillery
likewise has a very unique gift shop with bourbon themed
items from barrel-stave furniture to jewelry from local artisans
to explore.
Building at Centre Square, which features Angelic Hall, a
347-seat theatre with cushioned back seats and state-of-theart
light and sound, local historical artifacts and exhibits and
conference space. Kentucky Classic Theatre produces events
throughout the year in this venue culminating with an annual
comedic melodrama as part of the Holiday Festival. For further
info about upcoming performances at the Fine Arts Building
in the summer. The MCAHC also partners with Farmers
National Bank and others to present a Community Performing
Arts series that features quality performances from baroque
guitar and brass ensembles to classical piano, African drums
and professional dancing throughout the year. Finally, don't
forget to pay a visit to the Sisters of Loretto Motherhouse to
visit the newly created heritage center for ongoing art collection
displays.
Conventions...
Once serving as junior and senior high schools, Centre
Square is comprised of two large buildings, indoor and outdoor
theatres and Johnston Field.
provides a place for meetings, performances and a place for
athletes to hone their skills.
The Great Outdoors
This hiking path is not only beautiful but also challenging,
educational and enjoyable to traverse.
Cecil Gorley was a long-time conservation office
and all-around good fellow who lived in Marion
County for many years. The Trail honors his dedication to
outdoors conservation and the community. It was carved out
of the landscape after the Fagan Branch Reservoir was built to
provide another source of water for the community.
In 2009, a rehabilitation project began that included clearing
the trail, widening it, building new bridges and adding signs,
viewing and fishing stations and other amenities to make this a
great outdoors experience for seasoned hikers and recreational
walkers. The Trail and bridges are also wide enough for your
BMX bike!
We at the Lebanon Tourist & Convention Commission are
proud to offer you this wonderful experience and our deepest
gratitude goes to our partners - Lebanon Water Company,
Marion Adjustment Center, City of Lebanon, Marion County
Health Center and the Federal Highway Administration
Recreational Trails Program/Governor’s Office Department
for Local Government - for making the grand project possible.
Enjoy the trail, the lake and Mother Nature. You’re in the
true Heart of Kentucky and the Gorley Trail is good for the
heart... and your mind and soul!
About the Trail:
The Cecil L. Gorley Naturalist Trail is not for sissies. Your
3.2-mile trek around the Fagan Branch Reservoir is distinctive
and gorgeous but it has its share of hills and steep climbs.
Noted for the 47 bridges one crosses as he or she traverses
this foot tour of nature and wildlife, the Trail will be undergoing
expansion into an additional 30 acres soon and markers
identifying natural occurrences will be added.
There is paved parking at both ends and a portion of the trail
crosses the dam. You can start at either end and the experience
is notably different depending on which direction you are hiking.
The Rules:
No fuel-powered equipment is allowed on the trail or in the
water. You can walk or jog the trail or ride your bicycle on it but
leave the ATV at home. Same goes for the water. Paddle or sail
your boat or use your electric motor but leave the gas-powered
engines in the garage. We drink this water!
No open fires are allowed on this property.
Pets are allowed but must be kept under control with a leash.
This is a forest and your pet will likely want to wander. We
don’t want you or your pet to get lost.
Hiking Safety:
* Plan and Prepare. Have a map of the area you are hiking.
Stay on clearly marked trails. A compass can help you find
your way through difficult terrain.
* Do not hike alone. It is also a good idea to let someone else
know your destination and when you plan to return.
* Take basic provisions, such as water or sports drink and
food/ snack. A number of things could keep you out longer
than expected - enjoying time by the lake, difficult terrain or
an injury. Food and water will help to keep your energy and
morale. If you’re bringing your pet, bring water for it, too, and
doggy bags for picking up waste.
* Take some basic hiking gear. Don’t go overboard on gear
but these few essentials can offer a huge peace of mind:
o Whistle - to aid in rescue.
o First aid kit.
o Knife or multi-purpose tool.
o Flashlight and batteries.
o Weather related gear, such as sun screen, sunglasses and
rain gear.
Off-road biking safety:
* Make sure your bicycle and equipment are in good working
condition.
* Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.
* Do not bike alone.
* Always leave word of your destination and when you plan
to return.
* Stay alert. Always keep a lookout for obstacles in your
path. Show respect for other trail users.
* Be sure to have water and a snack with you.
* Do not bike on a wet, muddy trail. In addition to being
unsafe, it can cause damage to the trail.
Leave No Trace!
Pack it in, Pack it out! Take all trash and leftover food/snacks
with you. Trash receptacles are located throughout the trail.
Respect wildlife. Keep your distance and do not feed animals
you may encounter. This can disrupt their natural food cycle.
Be considerate of other visitors. Show respect to other trail
users. Obey posted trail rules.
Scott's Ridge Lookout
The view from the Scott's Ridge Lookout covers more than 100 square miles
and visitors can see landmarks in St. Mary, Lebanon and Gravel Switch. It is truly
breathtaking and the drive to get there is peaceful and equally scenic.
The site became more visitor-friendly when Marion County Fiscal Court conducted
a massive clean-up effort in the area throughout 2005 and 2006 and constructed
a viewing deck with fencing and better parking.
Marion County Sportsman Lake
Marion County Sportsman Lake is an outdoor heaven loaded with fish, wildlife
and scenic beauty.
This is a new "old" lake that was built in 1952. Around 1990, the Kentucky
Department of Fish & Wildlife drained it and reconstructed the lakebed with channels,
humps, ridgelines and points, all of which are conducive to improved fish
habitat. Largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie and hybrid bluegill will
be the species most likely encountered.
The Sportsman Lake grounds can be hunted. There are squirrel, deer and waterfowl.
Sportsman Lake is home of the Marion County Sportsman Club. There is a clubhouse,
playground and facilities for fishing, picnicking and archery. The Club also
Marion County Wildlife
Management Area & State Forest
The Marion County Wildlife
Management Area & State Forest protects
and enhances wildlife habitat for upland
wildlife species, including forest songbirds.
Opened in Aug. 2010, the 1,293-acre
outdoors paradise offers excellent squirrel,
deer and turkey hunting. Except for fields
surrounding the parking area, the entire
property is forested and has rugged terrain.
Outdoors lovers will find a recreational
paradise with opportunities for hiking,
picnicking and bird watching. The area
is open for public use that also includes
wildlife viewing and photography under
statewide regulations.
The Marion County Wildlife
Management Area & State Forest is in the
Rolling Fork River watershed and is covered
in relatively unbroken upland mixed
hardwood forest. There are parking lots
with appropriate signage, trash receptacles
and boundaries that are well marked and
posted with signs and yellow paint.
Area educational institutions use the
property for education purposes and
the public is permitted to use the area
year-round except during closed periods
as might be required by prudent wildlife
management practices and as might be
otherwise restricted by site-specific regulation.
The new management area does
not currently have any fishing ponds or
streams, although there are water holes
that might provide some frog hunting
opportunities. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife,
the Kentucky Division of Forestry and
Marion County Fiscal Court jointly own
the property, which was purchased with
money from the Kentucky Heritage Land
Conservation Fund and the federal Wildlife
Restoration program.
Sports &
Recreation
Sports enthusiasts and spectators alike never lack for fun
in Lebanon. For its size, the community has an extraordinarily
lengthy line-up of all the traditional sporting
activities but also more eclectic choices such as bull
riding, disc golf and karate workshops.
There’s even stockcar racing, drag races, bowling and more
within a 30-minute drive.
Lebanon has recreational opportunities for average to serious
athletes and a non-stop schedule of elementary, middle and
high school competitions, organized youth and adult leagues
and fitness programs. There are well-equipped fitness centers
and the Lebanon Aquatic Center features a 25 foot x 25 yard
indoor heated pool as well as a 100-foot winding outdoor slide
and kiddie pool.
Marion County is an outdoors paradise. Just outside the downtown
area is a deer hunting mecca and fishing paradises such as
Marion County Sportsman’s Lake, Fagan Branch Reservoir, the
Cecil L. Gorley Naturalist Trail, the Marion County Wildlife
Management Area & State Forest.
Wild game is plentiful in the community and there are organized
outdoor competitions for children and adults also.
Historic homes
& landmarks of
Lebanon, Kentucky...
Step back in time and get a significant glimpse of a town
that flourished even after the Civil War delivered it a
severe blow. In the 19th Century, Lebanon was one of
the stops along the National Turnpike from Maysville
to Nashville and Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson met here
long before the Civil War.
Lebanon was susceptible to attack during the Civil War
because of its L&N Railroad depot and Union Commissary
located downtown. Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan and
his Morgan's Raiders visited the town in all three of their raids
into Kentucky and he once burned 20 buildings in his effort to
rout the Union troops protecting the depot.
Many of the homes on this self-guided walking and driving
tour were built in the 1800s, including "Ann's Chateau,"
which became an infirmary in the early 1900s, was home to
Dominican Sisters and nurses and was converted to apartments
in the 1930s, "Evergreen Bend," built in 1840 and where John
Lancaster Spalding, the first bishop of the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Peoria and co-founder of The Catholic University of
America, was raised, and "Myrtledene," now a bed & breakfast
but once taken over by Morgan for his headquarters and where
he rode his horse right through the front door and started up
the stairs.
There's a home on West Main Street with a cave in the back
yard that housed soldiers and horses during the Civil War and
there was once a home on Kobert Avenue that was a flourishing
girls' school in the mid-1800s. One of the teachers, J. Proctor
Knott, later became governor of Kentucky.
Lebanon's first hospital still stands and there are houses on
the National Register of Historic Homes and a striking Victorian
mansion with third floor tower and cupola built in 1878.
There are significant cemeteries, such as the Lebanon
National Cemetery, Belltown Cemetery and Ryder Cemetery,
earthworks erected as defenses against Confederate invasion
and statues of Morgan on a fiery steed with pistol blazing and
Union Gen. George H. "Rock of Chickamauga" Thomas.
Brochures with maps can be found at the Lebanon Tourist &
Convention Commission office along with other information.
This tour is easy to follow and the homes, several of which have
markers and wayside exhibits, are easy to find. The walking
portion of the tour covers two miles and can also be driven.
Civil War history
Lebanon was one of only two cities that felt the wrath
of Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan and Morgan's
Raiders during all three of their Civil War raids into
Kentucky.
Follow Morgan's activities in Lebanon on this self-guided
walking or driving tour that starts at Centre Square and carries
five blocks through the historic downtown district. There are
wayside exhibits along the route with information and photos.
A guide with map and additional information is available
at the visitor center located inside the Convention Complex at
Centre Square at 239 N. Spalding Avenue. The visitor center
is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. It's closed state
and federal holidays.
For more information, call 270.692.0021, e-mail info@visitlebanonky.com
or go to VisitLebanonKy.com.
Directions...
• Just one block north of Centre Square is Myrtledene and
Morgan's Headquarters - Used by Morgan as his headquarters
during his July 1862 raid on Lebanon; Myrtledene is completely
furnished in antiques and serves as a bed & breakfast now.
It has been designated a Kentucky Landmark by the Kentucky
Heritage Council.
• Go one block south to the Lebanon Civil War Park - See
a statue of Major Gen. George H. "Rock of Chickamauga"
Thomas who led Union forces from Lebanon to Mill Springs in
January 1862 for the first major Civil War battle in Kentucky.
• Go one block west to Kobert Avenue then head south on
Kobert to see The Kobert Place - On July 5, 1863, cannon fire
missed the train depot and fell on the lawn of this house. The
home was also set on fire but neighbors put it out. The wayside
exhibit is on the corner of Kobert and ML King Avenue, just
past the house.
• Turn right onto ML King and go one block. Just to the right
on Proctor Knott Avenue is the Presbyterian Cemetery - This is
all that is left of the Presbyterian church that was blown up by
cannon fire during the Battle of Lebanon.
• Continue one block on ML King to Depot Street and see
the site where the train depot was located along with the Union
Commissary building where the Battle of Lebanon took place.
The depot itself is gone now but this was the site of a horrific
raid by Morgan on Thomas' troops.
• Go one block south to Main Street and turn right. Just
down the street is the Holly Hill Inn. The residence at Holly
Hill is one of Lebanon's historic landmarks. Known for years
as "Sunnyside," the front hall, including its winding stairway,
was added in the early 1850s. Some walls are 18 inches thick,
the woodwork is hand carved and the floors are ash and poplar.
It's the site where Morgan's brother, Tom Morgan, was laid out
after falling in the battle in Lebanon July 5, 1863. He was later
buried in the garden until the war was over. The motel opened
in 1951.
• Go two blocks east and on the corner is The Shuck Building
and Gen. Thomas' Headquarters. The second floor was used as
Gen. Thomas' headquarters after he was assigned to Lebanon
in 1861.
• Go one block east on Main Street and turn left onto
Spalding Avenue. Go one block back to Centre Square but
across the street from Centre Square, next to the Lebanon
United Methodist Church (a lovely architectural sight itself)
is the Dr. Maxwell House - Morgan knew Maxwell and knew
that Maxwell was a Union sympathizer so he set the house on
fire. Maxwell was the surgeon at Camp Crittenden, the Civil
War's fourth largest black soldier encampment, which was also
located in Lebanon.
• The Lebanon National Cemetery, located just outside of
downtown, is the final resting place for many of the Union
50

soldiers that fell in the Civil War. It began when space was
needed to bury those who were killed during the nearby Battle
of Perryville.
• Ryder Cemetery is on your right just as you leave the downtown
district traveling east. It is home of the Capt. Andrew
Offutt Monument, which honors Offutt (Nov. 9, 1837-Oct.
7, 1921) who served as a Union officer in the 5th Kentucky
Cavalry during the American Civil War, participating in Gen.
William Tecumseh Sherman's march. It is speculated that he
must have seen his actions during the war as his greatest life's
act, as he lived for 56 years after the war, yet his family chose to
depict him in his Union Army uniform. The monument features
a marble statue of Offutt atop a granite base. Offutt is wearing
a kepi hat and tunic length coat with a sword extending downward.
On both sides of Offutt's grave are two other veterans of
the War, one of whom was a Confederate who rode with John
Hunt Morgan, Dr. W. W. Cleaver.
On July 17, 1997, the Offutt monument was one of 60 different
monuments related to the Civil War in Kentucky placed
on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the few
monuments dedicated for a Union soldier/unit. In fact, except
for the Union Monument in Vanceburg, it is the only one to
express strong sentiment for the Union cause.
All these sites are located on or just off Scenic Highway/
Byway U.S. 68 and carry through an area of beautiful old
homes and current renovation projects.
If that's not enough...
Lebanon's trail is part of Kentucky's John Hunt Morgan
Heritage Trail where visitors can retrace the steps of Morgan's
Raiders and discover the history behind all the stories.
More than 60 wayside exhibits are strategically located along
the trail to help travelers recreate and interpret the historic
routes taken by one of Kentucky's famed Civil War generals.
• Morgan's First Raid, July 1862 - Morgan crossed the
Cumberland River and began a 24-day journey across Kentucky
capturing 17 towns and paroling nearly 1,200 Union troops. An
exasperated Abraham Lincoln told his advisors, "They are having
a stampede in Kentucky. Please look to it!"
On July 8, under the cover of darkness, Morgan slipped out
of Celina, Tenn., beginning the First Kentucky Raid. See where
in the early morning hours of July 9, 1862, Morgan's men surprised
the Union garrison in Tompkinsville. Within two hours,
Confederates had fought and captured the Union soldiers.
After the battle, Morgan's Raiders marched northward
through Kentucky stopping in Lebanon and Springfield. From
Springfield, Morgan and his men marched north into the bluegrass
and back south crossing the Cumberland into the safety
of Tennessee.
Months later, Morgan again returned to Tompkinsville but,
this time, he and his Raiders only camped until they began their
next Kentucky raid, The Christmas Raid, from 1862-63.
• Morgan's Christmas Raid, 1862 - 1863 - On December
23, with nearly 4,000 men, Morgan crossed into Kentucky
near Tompkinsville. Follow the Raiders to Glasgow where on
Christmas Eve they captured the town routing a small Union
force before the first real resistance took place Christmas Day
at Bear Wallow near Cave City.
Visit the site where Morgan's men burned the L&N Railroad
bridge across Bacon Creek at Bonnieville.
At Elizabethtown, learn how 600 Union soldiers forced
Morgan to fight for the city, street by street and building by
building, for several hours before Morgan's numbers and artillery
took their toll on the brave men.
The next day, Dec. 28, Morgan's men captured 600 Federals
guarding two trestles on Muldraugh Hill. Morgan burned the
trestles to ashes creating a huge break in Union Gen. William S.
Rosecrans' rail supply line. The following day, Federal pursuit
caught up with Morgan at the Rolling Fork River near Boston
forcing Morgan to fight his way across. The goal of this raid
was to destroy the Union supply line that ran via the L&N
Railroad through Kentucky to Nashville.
• The Great Raid, 1863 -Morgan's Great Raid into Kentucky,
Indiana and Ohio began in Cumberland County, Kentucky
ending in Ohio, nine miles short of the Pennsylvania line.
The 24-day raid covered 1,000 miles, making it the longest
Confederate raid of the Civil War.
On July 2, 1863, with some 2,500 men, Morgan's regiments
crossed the Cumberland River into Kentucky at Burkesville and
Neeley's ferries. Learn about Marrowbone's Federal camp and
the skirmishes at Norris Branch and Columbia.
Make a stop at the site of a supply depot at Camp Billy
Williams near Neatsville. Continue the raid where the men
camped at Cane Valley before the Rebel disaster at Tebbs Bend
where Morgan's men took 71 casualties. See where troops foraged
at the Hiestand House in Campbellsville.
Take a side trip to Greensburg to learn about Union Gen.
Edward H. Hobson who pursued Morgan. Visit the site in
Lebanon where Morgan's teenage brother, Tom, was shot in the
heart and died in his brother Calvin's arms. In retaliation, much
of the city was burned.
Find out how 25 Union soldiers in Bardstown delayed
Morgan for 24 hours and the action that took place at both
Bardstown Junction and Lebanon Junction.
See where two steamboats ferried more than 2,200 men and
their horses across the river at Brandenburg for 16 hours while a
detachment of Harrison County, Ind. Home Guards fired at the
Raiders with an ancient cannon.
William Clark Quantrill Trail self-guided tour
Follow the William Clark Quantrill Trail self-guided tour, just
minutes from downtown Lebanon, and see sites associated
with one of the most vicious renegades of all time. Posing as a
Union soldier at times, Quantrill murdered and pillaged along
with the James Brothers.
Quantrill displayed cruel tendencies even as a child.
Purportedly, this bad seed would shoot pigs through the ears
just to hear them squeal, nail snakes to trees and tie cats' tails
together for the pure joy of watching them claw each other to
death.
When the Civil War broke out in April 1861, Quantrill joined
the Confederate side. By late in the year, he became unhappy
with the Confederates' reluctance to aggressively prosecute
the Union troops. As a result, he took it upon himself to take
a more antagonistic course with his own guerilla warfare,
becoming the leader of Quantrill's Raiders.
Starting with a small force of no more than a dozen men, the
pro-slavery guerrilla band began to make independent attacks
upon Union camps, patrols and settlements.
His band of marauders grew to more than 100 in 1862
and he became the most powerful leader of the many bands
that pillaged the area. Several famous would-be outlaws
joined him, including Frank and Jesse James and the Younger
Brothers. Quantrill's nature as an outlaw, murderer and thief
made him a prime candidate for the vicious attacks, where
he took advantage of the pandemonium for his own use in
profitable hit-and-run attacks on pro-Union sympathizers and
Federal Troops alike.
Quantrill was eventually killed during a raid into Kentucky in
1865. He raided the hamlet of Bradfordsville twice in 1865 and
once burned the community for revenge.
