From the Chancellor
A new century with new challenges
and opportunities makes this an exciting time to be a part of the University
of Arkansas at Monticello. As we celebrate our centennial year, we remember
the legacy of a school that has touched the lives of generations of students.
We began the year at the State Capitol with a re-enactment of the signing of
Act 100, the legislation that created UAM as well as Arkansas State, Arkansas
Tech and Southern Arkansas. Our celebration began on campus
with a Centennial Convocation on April 1, and we honored
a number of alumni who played key roles in the life of the
university at our commencement exercises in May. We will
continue our centennial celebration with a number of activities
during Homecoming weekend October 22-24, including
reunions of the 1959 NAIA district champion basketball team,
the 1979 AIC champion football team and graduating classes
ending in 9. I hope you will make plans to join us in October.
As we celebrate the past we look forward to the future and
a new century. I am happy to report that in spite of tough
economic times, we’ve had no layoffs, instituted a new pay plan for classified
employees, and kept tuition and fee increases to a minimum. Thanks to the
generous support of alumni and friends of the institution, we awarded more
than 300 private scholarships to deserving students in the past year. Private
scholarships are a lifeline for so many of our students who would find it
difficult to impossible to finance a college education without assistance.
In September, we will dedicate the newest addition to our physical plant,
the indoor practice facility located at the north end of Convoy Leslie Cotton
Boll Stadium. The new building contains a 40-yard turf practice area that will
be used by our athletic teams and marching band, as well as coaches offices
and meeting rooms. On your next visit to campus, I hope you’ll take time to
stop in and tour this new facility. Then take a walk to the center of campus
to see our newest addition, the Centennial Clock Tower, which contains the
names of those individuals who are part of The Centennial Circle.
And finally, I want to thank Dr. Don Holley, professor emeritus of history,
for his work on our centennial book Celebrating a Century of Opportunity.
This 190-page book contains a compelling history of the institution, from
Fourth District Agricultural School to four-year university, and is a must-read
for anyone with ties to UAM.
If you haven’t visited the campus lately, make plans to stop by. My door is
always open.
Best Wishes,
Brad Sears bat away the competition at
a regional timber sports event.
Sears, a former collegiate baseball
player, won the nationally televised
Southeast Stihl Timbersports Collegiate
Series in Huntsville, Ala., on March
13, beating 15 competitors from
colleges across the southeast in a twoday
regional conclave sponsored by
the Association of Southern Forestry
Clubs. UAM won the team event for
the 25th time in the 52-year history of
the competition while Sears captured
the individual Stihl title.
Sears is the school’s third winner
in the six-year-old Stihl competition,
said Dr. Lynne Thompson, one of the
forestry club’s two faculty advisors.
Sears, who majors in wildlife management,
said the club chose him as
its representative in the four-event Stihl
competition for his experience, skill
and strength.
The 24-year-old finished third in
the event’s first discipline - the underhand
chop - in which competitors
chopped elevated wood blocks while
standing on them.
Sears said the ax-swinging technique
required for the event resembled
the swinging of a baseball bat. “Just
putting that motion with an ax instead
of a bat gives me a little bit of an
advantage because I already have that
motion down. It’s just easier for me to
get good cuts into the wood and get a
faster time.”
Sears and Thompson also credited
Karl Hansen, a Sheridan forester and
professional timber sports competitor,
for regularly visiting the school’s forestry
club members to teach chopping
and sawing techniques.
Sears’ victory earned him a spot
Like Autism
r. Benjamin Brown, assistant
Dprofessor of psychology, is
conducting research on an autismlike
disorder that affects the ability of
children to develop memories.
Brown recently presented his research
at the 2009 Society for Research
and Child Development Conference in
Denver, Colorado.
Brown’s study examines the differences
in structure and content of
earliest memories provided by children
diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and
those provided by typically developing
children. Brown conducted his
research in collaboration with psychology
colleagues at North Carolina
State University, Meredith College and
Canisius College.
Asperger syndrome is related to
autism and children who suffer from
the disorder show difficulties in social
interaction as well as restricted and
stereotyped patterns of behavior and
interests.
During the fall of 2009, Brown will
begin new research in partnership with
psychologists at Gallaudet University
that will explore memory development
in deaf college-age individuals
with varying degrees of early language
exposure.
Brown joined the faculty of UAM’s
School of Social and Behavioral Sciences
in 2008. He is also faculty cosponsor
of the Psi Chi National Honor
This year’s forum dealt with emphasizing
sustainable forest management
as the primary means to address the
It’s All
About Arkansas
On
Dr. Trey Berry is passionate about Arkansas
history. The dean of UAM’s School of Social
and Behavioral Sciences thinks Arkansans have
been shortchanged by an educational system that
teaches very little about their native state.
Berry set about rectifying the problem by
authoring an Arkansas history textbook for
grades 5 through 7 entitled The Arkansas Journey,
published in 2007. Now Berry and a colleague on
the UAM faculty are working to fill a void in the
state’s history at the collegiate level.
Berry (left, above) and Dr. Kyle Day, assistant
professor of history at UAM, have recently published
Arkansas History: A Collegiate Reader to be
used as a supplemental text for college curricula.
The 610-page book is a collection of articles and
primary documents to be used as a resource for
Arkansas history classes at the collegiate level.
The book contains newspaper editorials, including
the famous editorial penned by the late Harry
Ashmore of the Arkansas Gazette on the crisis at
Little Rock Central High School. Also included are
autobiographies, reminiscences, explorer’s diaries,
inaugural addresses of the state’s governors, an
essay on the legacy of Governors Bumpers, Pryor
and Clinton, and primary documents such as the
state Slave Code and the Articles of Secession.
“One of the things we’ve found out in this
process is the dearth of books about Arkansas
history,” said Berry. “There are fewer books about
Arkansas history than almost every state in the
union. This is a state with a rich, colorful, fascinating
history that needs to be told.”
All That Jazz
AM has jazzed up its music
U
program. The University became
the second in Arkansas to offer a degree
program in jazz studies when the
Arkansas Department of Higher Education
and the National Association of
Schools of Music recently approved the
new program. UA-Fort Smith is the
only other Arkansas university with a
jazz studies degree program.
UAM will begin offering classes
in jazz studies this fall as part of the
school’s existing bachelor of arts in
music degree. The new concentration
will require 18 hours of jazz studies.
“We’ve had such a successful jazz
band program and we saw this as a real
opportunity for growth,” said Annette
Hall, chair of the Division of Music.
UAM currently has three jazz
ensembles. The top group, Jazz Band
I, has performed at the University
of North Texas and Clark Terry Jazz
Festivals and was recently invited to
perform at the Arkansas All-State Band
Festival in Hot Springs.
V-12
The Navy Comes To Arkansas A&M
In the early months of 1942 the Axis Powers were winning the
Second World War. After conquering France in 1940 and defeating the
British at Dunkirk, Nazi Germany dominated virtually all of Europe,
Celebrating a Centu
while Japan controlled southeastern Asia and most of the For its survival, Bankston knew that his campus had to
western Pacific. The American victory at Midway in June make a greater contribution to “national defense.”
encouraged hope of an early victory, but the bloody fighting In late April 1943 Bankston learned that the Navy had
on Guadalcanal showed that the Pacific war would not end assigned Arkansas A&M a V-12 unit. Traveling by train
soon.
and bus to reach the campus, 410 men reported for duty at
To man its ships and aircraft, the United States Navy required
Arkansas A&M by July 1. The original quota of students
more officers than were currently available. The Navy assigned to A&M included 210 Navy trainees and 200 Ma-
required commissioned officers to have a college degree. rine basic students. The Navy men were billeted in Horsfall
In December 1942, a year after Pearl Harbor, the Navy Hall, while the Marines occupied Harris, the better of the
introduced a college officer-training program with special two dorms.
consideration given to small and financially weak colleges. When the school opened for its first V-12 term, the
In 1943, under the leadership of President Marvin military presence created a dramatic change in the character
Bankston, Arkansas A&M faced a severe enrollment problem.
of the campus. The overwhelming majority of students on
In the fall of 1940 the school enrolled 993 students, campus were V-12 trainees. Only about 50 students, mostly
one student short of a school record. But the enrollment women from the local area, were civilians. Yet the Navy
slid to only 244 students in the 1941-42 school year. The wanted the school to experience a normal college life.
decline stemmed entirely from military manpower needs. Most of the V-12 trainees were from outside of Arkan-

sas. The local Monticello citizens were apprehensive about
the presence of a large group of outsiders. Most of the local
young men had been called into service, and their parents
and relatives criticized what they saw as coddling and
pampering the V-12 students. The result was that many
V-12s avoided Monticello. Knowing the doubts circulating
in town, an editorial writer lectured his readers, “It behooves
us all to serve and serve well these men who are preparing to
serve us.”
V-12 students ranged from high school graduates to men
who had completed two or more years of college work in
various majors.
Under the Navy’s guidance, Bankston placed A&M
on a year-round academic schedule of three terms of four
months each, starting on July 1, November 1, and March 1.
This schedule facilitated transfers between any of the V-12
schools. Navy trainees attended classes five and a half days
each week.
From the earliest days of the V-12 program the Navy encouraged
participation in intercollegiate athletics as long as
it did not interfere with regular duties. This policy produced
what James G. Schneider, the historian of the V-12 program,
called a “Cinderella” football team at Arkansas A&M.
The school’s recent football history was either spectacular
or notorious, depending on one’s point of view. In three
years (1939-41), the Wandering Weevils had traveled 40,000
miles, received national acclaim, and won three games. In
1942, the school canceled its football season because of low
enrollment and was not expected to field a football team
during the war.
As the fall of 1943 approached, however, football fever
began to rise. There was a widespread desire to field a football
team that could score touchdowns and win games since
everyone knew that the V-12 unit contained a wealth of
experienced players.
Lieutenant Homer Cole, the athletic director of the
A&M V-12 unit, contacted the University of Arkansas with
an offer to play a game on an open date in the Razorback’s
schedule. A&M had no team, not even uniforms, but Cole
apparently had a plan. The Razorbacks were anxious to fill
their open date and agreed to loan the A&M team their
road uniforms.
At a muster, an officer said, “Everyone with football experience,
take a step forward.” Nearly the entire unit moved
forward. Next he asked how many had college football
experience, and half of the unit took another step forward.
The Aggies – they used this term to distinguish themselves
from the “losing” Wandering Weevils – borrowed a ball
from Monticello High School and started practicing on
Monday of game week.
ry of Opportunity
One of the team members, Charles ‘Pinky’ Steed,
remembered, “We went out in shorts and tennis shoes and
made up six plays we would use. We practiced two days, got
on a bus and spent the night in Russellville on Friday, and
got to Razorback Stadium at noon on Saturday.”
Despite their lack of preparation and having to draw
plays in the dirt, the V-12 Aggies upset the Arkansas Razorbacks,
winning the game 20-12.
Loaded with football talent, the Aggies were almost an
all-star team. Most of the players were Marines with their
usual reputation for toughness; and among the 22 men
who traveled to Fayetteville, the great majority had at least
one year’s experience in college football. Six were former
Razorbacks; others had played for SMU, Texas A&M, and
Oklahoma A&M. Steed had played at Arkansas Tech.
After the initial victory, the season might have been over
except for a stroke of good luck. The Naval Air Technical
Training Command (NATTC) team at Millington,
Tennessee, suspended its football season because of Navy
regulations. Secretary Knox ruled that no service team could
play away from their station or base. This team already had
arranged a two-year schedule, along with equipment and
stadium dates in Memphis’ Crump Stadium. Since V-12
units were not under any such restriction, A&M assumed
the NATTC schedule and uniforms and played their home
games at Memphis. (V-12 trainees could play anywhere
within a 48-hour radius of the A&M campus.)
Under Coach Cole, the season was highly successful with
a 5-1-1 record and an invitation to play in the inaugural Oil
Bowl in Houston, Texas, on January 1, 1944. The game was
a rematch between A&M and the Southwestern Louisiana
Institute. The two teams had played to a 20-20 tie earlier
in the season. Southwestern Louisiana was led by halfback
Alvin Dark who later managed the Oakland A’s in the World
Series. On a rain-soaked field A&M lost 24-7. For the first
time in a decade, A&M enjoyed a winning football season.
Many of the 1943 players were transferred around the
country to continue their naval training, but 1944 was also
a winning season for the V-12 Aggies. Under Coach Eugene
Augustefer, they won seven games and lost two. In a rematch,
A&M defeated Southwestern Louisiana 18-6, but against
Arkansas they lost 41-0. When the V-12 program closed, the
school again suspended football for the 1945 season.
Without a V-12 unit, A&M would probably have not
survived the war. Ultimately, no Arkansas school failed, but
the enrollment of 50 civilian students in 1943 suggested
that survival would have been highly problematic without
external assistance. Instead, the V-12 Program enabled
A&M to make a contribution to the war effort that was
unique in Arkansas.
COACH
Coaching legend Alvy Early steps down as Director of
Athletics but will remain for the next few seasons as
softball coach. It’s in his blood.
(By Sean Saunders, Pine Bluff Commercial. Reprinted with permission.)
here’s no question Arkansas-Monticello coach Alvy Early is in the
twilight of his career. The 68-year-old stepped down from his position
as athletic director April 29 after 12 years to focus on softball and his
family. TEarly faces a cross-roads in his coaching career by turning over the reins of the
UAM MAGAZINE
athletic program to women’s basketball coach Chris Ratcliff. But what can’t be
ignored is a coaching career that includes more than 850 victories at one school.
“Honestly, I don’t pay much attention to it. I know that it’s an achievement,
and every coach’s goal is to win,” Early said. “It all comes back to what players
you can recruit and get to perform. I’ve been fortunate in my 30 years here – 21
years in basketball and now 13 in softball, there were a few years where I doubled
up – I’ve been able to recruit athletes that can compete at this level and had good
teams.”
Early is in rarefied air, winning more than 400 games in two different sports at
the collegiate level. He led the UAM women’s basketball team to 425 wins before
finishing the 2009 softball season with 457 career victories.
Early has also had an eye for talent throughout the years, recruiting All-
Americans in both sports. He produced 11 All-Americans in basketball, including
four-time NAIA All-American Tina Webb, and three National Fastpitch Coaches
Association All-Americans in softball.
Dating back to his 12 years at West Fork High School before arriving at UAM,
Early has also coached just about every sport imaginable. The only exceptions are
soccer and hockey.
When Early arrived in Monticello, it didn’t take long to make an impact.
12

Early Through the Years . . .
Building basketball
Early inherited an already successful UAM squad under
founder Mary Jane Lavender in 1979 and didn’t relinquish
the reins until 2000. In only his second year, he had already
worked his winning touch, leading the Blossoms to 29
victories in 1981.
By the time he had three All-Americans on his squad in
the late 80s, he had his team competing for the Arkansas
Intercollegiate Conference championship every year. Early
captured his first AIC title in 1987, sharing the crown with
Arkansas Tech, and on that team were two members still
influencing girls basketball in the region – Star City coach
Becky Brown and Watson Chapel coach Leslie Byrd.
“I loved Coach Early,” said Brown, who is 12th on the
school’s career scoring list. “He was so family-oriented. He
and his wife (Nancy) went out of their way to make us a
part of his family. But he was also so well-organized. Everything
in practice had to be done a certain way, or else he
wasn’t satisfied.”
The NAIA’s policy of selecting teams for its national
tournament based on geographical location made it difficult
for UAM to make the tournament field because it always
had to compete with Arkansas Tech every year, Early said.
The Golden Suns and Blossoms went through a 10-year
period where the two captured or shared every AIC title,
with Arkansas Tech getting the upper hand most years. The
Blossoms finished the 80’s going 109-20 in four seasons.
as a
Campus
Favorite
in 1966 . . .
as a
young head
coach of
the Blossoms
in 1979 . . .
A special time
But UAM made a splash in its 1990 NAIA National
Tournament appearance, Webb’s senior year. After going
34-2, the Blossoms made their only appearance in a national
title game in program history.
“That was a special time for those four years, because at
that time we were the best team in Arkansas,” Early said.
“(The University of Arkansas) wasn’t far along in their
program, but what would’ve made it really special was that
all my players were from Arkansas at that time, That’s very
unusual, even for 20 years ago. Of course, now you won’t
find any of that anymore.”
But Southwest Oklahoma State was a thorn in Early’s
side that year. The Bulldogs defeated UAM 100-90 earlier in
the season, and after the Blossoms held a lead with five minutes
left in the national championship game, they eventually
fell to Southwest Oklahoma 82-75.
“We played them in the Queens Classic in Plainview
and celebrating
(Texas) and then in the national championship game. We
had leads in both of those games,” Early said. “This is a
strange deal, but you know how Frank Broyles has never
gone back and watched the film of the 1969 shootout the
Razorbacks lost with Texas? Well, I’ve never gone back and
watched the film of that championship game. We had a four
or a five-point lead with five minutes to go and didn’t win
for a variety of reasons. I didn’t think the calls went our way,
and we couldn’t hit shots.”
UAM MAGAZINE
The Right Guy
hris Ratcliff knows he has big shoes to fill. The man
selected to replace Alvy Early as UAM’s director of athlet-
Cics loves a challenge, and if his record as a women’s basketball
coach is any indication, the Boll Weevils and Cotton Blossoms
are in good hands.
“We couldn’t have found anyone better suited to lead our
athletic program than Chris,” said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter.
“He has demonstrated the leadership and commitment to build
on the legacy established by coach Early.”
Ratcliff came to UAM in 2006 as head women’s basketball
coach and later became assistant athletic director and NCAA
compliance officer. A native of Houston, Tex., Ratcliff led the
Cotton Blossoms to a 21-9 record in 2009 that included a trip to
the finals of the GSC Tournament.
Prior to coming to UAM, Ratcliff was as assistant coach and
recruiting coordinator at Henderson State who helped lead the
Lady Reddies to the 2004 NCAA Final Four.
Ratcliff is married to the former Andrea Edmonson of Gentry,
Ark. The Ratcliffs have a daughter, Ella, born in 2008.
Sideline wars
UAM won the AIC again in 1993, but once again fell
by double figures at Arkansas Tech during conference play.
Early and current Arkansas-Little Rock coach Joe Foley
waged a sideline war through the 80’s and early 90’s.
“I don’t know of anyone who is a better coach than he
is,” Early said. “Joe is the ultimate perfectionist. He can
get film on you from anywhere. They’d break it down, and
I joked with him before that we’d be out there running a
pattern, and one of his players would tell us that we aren’t
supposed to go there.”
Early captured four AIC championships since joining the
league in 1983. But Foley’s record exceeded that, making
five Final Four appearances from 1987-93, winning the
NAIA National Championship in ’92 and ’93.
“Some guys just know how to coach,” said Foley following
Early’s resignation as A.D. “Alvy is one of those rare
individuals who can coach any sport and be successful.”
Arkansas Tech and UAM shared the league crown one
more time in 1995, the final year for the AIC. Early then
took the Gulf South Conference, an NCAA Division II
league, by storm in his first year, capturing the first GSC
West championship. He then took his Blossoms to the
NCAA Tournament in 1998, falling to, once again, Arkansas
Tech in the South Regional final in Russellville.
UAM and Arkansas Tech’s addition to the GSC West
made it a three-team dominated league with tradition-rich
Delta State. Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame coach Lloyd
Clark took the Lady Statesmen to 16 national tournament
appearances in 19 seasons, winning three national titles and
finishing as runner-up once.
Clark went 32-1 during the 1989-90 season, the same year
UAM went to the NAIA National Championship game. The
Blossoms handed Delta State its only loss that year.
“Lloyd called the day we joined and told the rest of the
Gulf South that women’s basketball in this league just got a
lot tougher with us and Tech coming in,” Early said.
14

Early claims a lot of success came from his ability to
recruit and identify talent. His success formed one of the
state’s most prestigious summer camps.
“He was a great guy. We always had a lot of fun working
those camps together,” said Ouachita Baptist coach Garry
Crowder, who worked at several of Early’s camps. “I had to
coach against him some, but he was always fun to work with.”
Making a change
UAM began its softball program in 1996 under Steve
Baxley and went 4-22 its first year. Early decided to take
over the program the next year, and the team had a winning
season the second he took over.
“I took softball because after basketball had been ranked
and been to the national tournament a couple of times, here
is softball, and I don’t want to start a women’s program and
have it be a laughing stock,” Early said. “That’s why I went
ahead and took those responsibilities. I like that sport.”
Early played fastpitch softball while growing up in Pahokee,
Fla., and Northwest Arkansas. He increased the team’s
win total to 31 games in his second season, and the only
other time he won less than 30 games in a season was 2008.
He retired from basketball in 2000 and took over as A.D.
in 1996. So for four years, he was working three different
jobs at UAM. The news of him switching to softball came as
a shock to some of his former players.
“That did surprise me,” Byrd said. “I wasn’t even aware
that we had a softball team down there. I don’t think we had
a team when I went to school.”
UAM made its first regional appearance in 2004 and
won its first regional game in 2007, defeating Albany (Ga.)
State 9-7. Early has led the Blossoms to six GSC West
championships this decade and two appearances in the
tough South Regional Tournament.
Early continued his winning ways this year, going 38-16
and finishing second in the division. Early was the GSC
West Coach of the Year, and he had the GSC West Player of
the Year and Freshman of the Year in Lindsey Randall and
Kayla Jackson respectively.
A coach of coaches
Several coaches who dot the Arkansas landscape can
trace their roots back to Early. Aside from Brown and Byrd,
former Early players have gone on to various coaching positions
in basketball and softball.
“I always wanted to be a coach, but I got a lot from
Coach Early,” Brown said. “It seems like he has produced a
lot of coaches. I can think of at least eight from the teams I
played with.”
Even some athletes who played for Early this decade now
hold Arkansas high school coaching positions. Heidi Cox, a
2002 NFCA Third-Team All-American, is the softball coach
at Texarkana, and Gidget Pambianchi, a 2002 All-South
Region first-team selection, is the softball coach at Arkansas
Tech. Pambianchi led the Golden Suns to a GSC West title
in her first year.
A couple of his former softball assistants are also in collegiate
head coaching positions in Arkansas. Jason Miner and
Tim Munn were graduate assistants on the 2004 regional team,
and Miner is the softball coach at Lyon College in Batesville
while Munn is the softball coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor,” Munn said.
“That man could recruit. He could sell ice to an Eskimo he
was so good at recruiting. But he was also very honest in his recruiting.
He never tried to pull the wool over anybody’s eyes.”
But while he has influenced his former players to go
into the profession, he has also passed his blood into the
Arkansas coaching scene. His oldest son, Preston, is the girls
basketball coach at Rogers High School, his middle son,
Brian, is an assistant football coach at Central Arkansas, and
his youngest son, Kent, is the softball coach at Bentonville
High School.
“He’s been a huge influence on me,” Preston Early said.
“I’ve known since I was a little kid that I wanted to be a
coach, but he’s the sole reason behind it.”
Kent Early mirrors the sentiment. “He has every bit to
do with me becoming a softball coach,” he said.
What’s next
Alvy Early figures he probably has about four more coaching
years left in him after stepping down from A.D. His goal
is to see his incoming freshman class through their careers.
He also said he wants to spend more time with his wife,
still recovering from surgery and a car accident, and his kids.
And he wants to spend more time with his softball team.
“It’s not going to be easier, but I am going to get to
spend more time individually working with players,” Early
said. “For instance, if a player is having a problem hitting,
then I’ll be available when they’re not in class. They’ll come
into the cage, and we’ll work on it. And also I get to just be
around them more. It’s been hard on my players to be a in
situation where the coach isn’t always there.”
But whatever Early decides to do, he can rest assured that he
has built two of the most successful programs in UAM history.
for the university
Lasting Legacy
Jim Roiger Creates Third
Endowment Fund
D
r. Jim Roiger is planning to retire
in July from his post as chair of
UAM’s Division of Computer Information
Systems.
And he’s leaving with a flourish.
Dr. Roiger, a member of the faculty
since 1993, has created three separate
endowments in the UAM Foundation
Fund to support the CIS program and
the university’s Library.
The first endowment, the Raymond
O. and Loretta J. Roiger Chi Iota Sigma
Scholarship, was presented in the name
of Dr. Roiger’s parents and will generate
funds to be used for scholarships for CIS
students.
The second gift, the Edward and Veronica
Groebner Computer Information
Systems Operations Support Endowment,
is named for Dr. Roiger’s uncle
and aunt and will generate income to be
used to support the CIS program.
The third gift, the James F. Roiger
Endowed Fund for Library Acquisitions,
will be used to fund support services and
acquisitions for the university library. Dr.
Roiger plans to add a fourth endowment
for the Division of Computer Information
Systems in July.
“I think I speak for everyone connected
with this university when I say
how pleased and grateful I am for the
generosity demonstrated by Dr. Roiger,”
said Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “Jim has
been an esteemed colleague and distinguished
professor, but more than that,
he’s been a friend to the institution and
our students. These gifts are creating a
lasting legacy that will help future generations
through scholarship support, the
betterment of our library, and program
enhancement in the Division of Computer
Information Systems.”
Roiger, who holds a Ph.D. from
the University of Arizona, said the gifts
reflect his belief “in the inherent worth
and value of reading and education. Two
of the endowments have been given in
the name of family members who lived
simple, unnoticed lives,” he explained,
“but are worthy of remembrance – my
parents, Raymond and Loretta Roiger,
and my uncle and aunt, Edward and
Veronica Groebner, with whom I spent
many wonderful and memorable summers.
I created the library endowment in
my name because 100 years from now,
when the university celebrates its second
centennial, I would like to be remembered
as a person who understood that
reading will always be an essential life
skill.”
Sandra Campbell, director of UAM’s
Taylor Library, praised Roiger for creating
an endowment that “will allow us to
expand our acquisitions during a time
when budgets are limited. A library is
the lifeblood of any university and a gift
like this one provides invaluable help in
acquiring the resources we need to keep
the library current.”
Music Collection
he Music Listening Lab in the Tay-
T lor Library and Technology Center
recently acquired a collection of 31
operatic CDs from the estate of the late
Dr. Walter Moffatt of Monticello.
The collection was presented by Dr.
Moffatt’s family and includes the operas
of Debussy, Handel, Mozart, Rossini,
Verdi and Wagner.
“This is a significant collection and
we’re grateful to Dr. Moffatt’s family for
this generous gift,” said Annette Hall,
chair of the Division of Music. “These
CDs are a valuable resource for the university
and for our students.”
The Music Listening Lab is available
to all library patrons and includes a collection
of 1,453 scores, 758 CDs, 1,277
records and 60 videos and DVDs.
Keeping A Promise To His District
When Fourth District U.S. Congressman Mike Ross
it wasn’t just a politician’s
promise. Ross recently
presented one of his annual
Sarah Kilcrease, a
sophomore nursing
he history of the Moffatt family
recently with the presentation of a
newly-endowed scholarship honoring the
The endowment was created by his
sisters, Minnie May Moffatt and Pattie P.
Moffatt, and will be used to fund scholarships
in UAM’s Division of Music.
Dr. Walter A. Moffatt received a
junior college diploma from Arkansas
to a distinguished career in higher education,
serving as the long-time chairman
Celebrating a Century
of Opportunity
As we celebrate our 100th birthday, we invite you to help us observe this event in a very special
way. We are asking you to become part of our Centennial Circle, a group of 100 friends of UAM
who pledge $10,000 each to be used to create a $1 million unrestricted endowment for the UAM
Foundation Fund. Earnings from this endowment will be used on an annual basis to meet priority
needs of the university. These priorities will be determined by a joint committee of administration,
faculty, and students. None of the endowment earnings will be used to augment salaries. As part of
our Centennial Celebration, the university has constructed a clock tower located at the center of the
1909-2009
campus. Members of The Centennial Circle will have their names, or the names of whomever they
designate, inscribed on the Centennial Clock Tower.
If you would like to be part of The Centennial Circle, we encourage you to contact the UAM
Office of Advancement, at (800) 467-8148 or (870) 460-1028.
