Donations to the Canadian Red Cross in Alberta will support
programs and services across the province. Your donation
ensures that Red Cross staff and volunteers can provide food,
clothing and shelter to a family that has lost their home due to
disaster, provide seniors with medical equipment so that they can
have mobility and dignity as they recover from surgery or help
ensure that our youth learn important messages about healthy
relationships. To fi nd out how you can support the Power of
Humanity in your own community, please contact
Who We Are
More than a Century of Service
A PROUD HISTORY AND BRIGHT FUTURE
The Canadian Red Cross Society is a non-profi t, humanitarian
organization with over 100 years of experience working to
improve the lives of vulnerable people. The Canadian Red Cross
has helped Canadians, faced two world wars and other confl icts,
and responded to many natural disasters at home and around
the world. Today our work remains grounded in our mission: “To
improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the Power of
Humanity in Canada and around the world.”
PART OF AN INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN MOVEMENT
The Canadian Red Cross Society is part of the International Red
Cross Movement, which includes the International Committee of
the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross-Red
Crescent Societies and more than 186 Red Cross-Red Crescent
national societies. As part of the largest humanitarian organization
in the world, the Red Cross is united by seven Fundamental
Principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence,
Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality.
The Canadian Red Cross is involved in many programs and
services that assist vulnerable populations.
DISASTER MANAGEMENT (DM) mobilizes Red Cross
personnel to provide shelter, food, clothing, water, fi rst
aid, family reunifi cation and assistance to individuals
affected by personal emergencies and disasters. Disaster
Preparedness workshops are also held in most major
communities. Restoring Family Links (RFL) helps to reestablish
contact between family members separated by
international humanitarian emergencies, while Detention
Monitoring enables Canadian Red Cross personnel to
monitor immigration detainees in Canada.
FIRST AID AND WATER SAFETY has been a hallmark of
Canadian Red Cross programming for decades. Red Cross
First Aid/CPR offers courses to help individuals prepare for,
act on, control and manage life emergencies. From infants
to seniors, Water Safety programs have been keeping
Canadians safe in, on, or around water for over 60 years with
the fi rm belief that prevention through lessons is the key to
saving lives.
What We Do: Programs
Improving the Lives of Vulnerable People by Mobilizing the Power of Humanity
IN
The HEALTH EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM (HELP) is a donationbased
community service that provides medical equipment to
those recovering from surgery, injury or illness, or those spending
the fi nal days of their lives in their homes.
RESPECTED: VIOLENCE & ABUSE PREVENTION promotes
healthy relationships and safe communities through many youth
and adult educational workshops discussing the prevention of
bullying, violence, abuse and sexual exploitation.
COMMUNITY RESILIENCE AND CAPACITY BUILDING involves
programming that reaches out across Alberta. Aboriginal Outreach
focuses on initiatives like healthy dating relationships and bullying
and harassment prevention, while Calgary-based Community
Housing Support and Youth Assistance and Advocacy (YAHOO)
work to prevent homelessness through fi nancial assistance.
HUMANITARIAN ISSUES PROMOTION focuses on leadership
development and engagement on global issues. International
Humanitarian Law – the rules of war – is an aspect of humanitarian
promotion focusing on the application of the Geneva Conventions
to protect human life in times of confl ict.
Did you know that the
Canadian Red Cross is part
of the largest humanitarian
organization in the world?
MISSION
The Canadian Red Cross mission is to improve the lives of
vulnerable people by mobilizing the Power of Humanity in
Canada and around the world.
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES
Humanity Impartiality Neutrality Independence
Voluntary Service Unity Universality
“When man fi nally learns to control the elements...
When the winds will be quiet and the earth cannot
be torn apart...When there will be no loneliness... no
destitution...no war...When the last hungry man, woman
or child is fed...Only then will there be no need for the
Red Cross.” ~Albert Schweitzer
