Driving a new generation of readers
The image of a typical truckie is one
that is often surrounded by many
clichés. However, one transport firm
has gone a long way to changing
those perceptions with their support
of the Duffy Books in Homes
programme.
Mainfreight is a long-time supporter of the
programme and through their sponsorship of
numerous Duffy schools around the country
has been able to give the gift of reading to
thousands of children.
Mainfreight’s support is not just limited to
school sponsorship. Each year the firm
sponsors an end of year prize for each of
the schools involved in the programme.
This includes a cup, a certificate signed by
Executive Chairman Bruce Plested and a high
quality reference book.
Last year’s book prize was The DK Complete
Atlas of the World – The Definitive View of the
Earth which has been created with
state-of-the-art digital mapping software and
satellite data to present high-definition maps,
in a modern design, for every region of the
world.
Together with the cup and certificate, the
atlas makes up the Mainfreight Award for
Excellence in Attitude which was presented
to a senior student at each Duffy
school who has shown outstanding
Gregg Conning from Mainfreight Hamilton
attitude in all areas of school life. joins all the award winners from Pukenui
Representatives from Mainfreight
School to celebrate their achievements.
Sponsor needed
and its associated companies were
invited to visit schools and help
present the award –
an opportunity which they all relished.
What about the grandparents?
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day give
children the chance to show their
love for their parents. But what
about grandparents? With no special
section of the Hallmark card shelf for
them, Duffy Books in Homes decided
to do their part in recognising their
importance in children’s lives.
The Caught Being a Good Grandparent
Award recognises one special grandparent
at each of the schools involved in the Duffy
Books in Homes programme.
During the week of November 9, schools
chose a grandparent who had gone the extra
mile in supporting their grandchildren and
honoured them with a beautiful gift.
The award was Ian Brodie’s New Zealand,
Happy New Year!! I trust you all managed to have
relaxing time over the Christmas and New Years and
have had a productive first term of the year.
2009 was a busy year for us and the 2010 schedule
shows no signs of slowing down. Duffy Books in
Homes continues to make solid progress in areas
we think offer most value to Duffy kids. By working
together with our schools, we hope to create and
enhance the desire for Duffy children to read, through
book ownership.
An online questionnaire offered to all our schools
in November 2009 received an 80% response rate
showing that 97% of our schools reported improved
reading habits and 97% an improvement in attitudes
to reading. In addition almost 60% noted an increase
in parental involvement as a result of the programme.
These types of positive results are what Duffy Books
are all about.
Duffy Books in Homes continues to foster and
support our Duffy schools and communities as best
we can and 2010 will be a focus on family literacy
through our Early Childhood Education programme
Duffy R4R (Ready for Reading).
A highlight for the Duffy calendar this year will be
the celebration of 15 years since the Duffy Books in
Homes programme commenced. This will involve a
number of activities and events throughout the year
in your schools, Whitcoulls stores around the country
and in selected communities nationwide. So keep on
the lookout (particularly in August) for activities and
events celebrating 15 years of Duffy Books in Homes.
Some of the highlights of Term Four 2009 and Term
One 2010 and upcoming events are inside this
newsletter. I look forward to hearing about your Duffy
15 Year celebrations and any great stories during the
remainder of the year.
15 years of Duffy
Books in Homes
On August 24 1995 Prime Minister Jim Bolger officially
launched Duffy Books in Homes (although back then
there was no ‘Duffy’ in the title). Tairangi School in
Wellington was the venue and at the time was one
of just 82 Duffy schools.
15 years on and the club is a little less exclusive (547 schools and
100,000 kids) but just as important to the lives of its members.
Over 7,000,000 books have been distributed in the last 15 years
and many thousands of New Zealanders are now proud to call
themselves Duffy kids.
During 2010 we will be reconnecting with some of those people
who grew up enjoying the benefits of five brand new books each
year. Where are they now? Have their lives been positively
influenced by the programme? Do they now have children of their
own who they enjoy reading to? Watch out later this year for some
inspiring stories about where Duffy Books in Homes has taken its
participants.
Take a look at the next page to see some of the highlights of the
first 15 years.
Duffy schools need your help!
Without the help of sponsors there would be no Duffy Books in Homes
programme.
Sponsoring a school means that each Duffy kid there can enjoy a minimum of five free
books every year as well as the chance to receive regular weekly book awards and other
prizes throughout the year.
This is in addition to all the other services of the programme such as the travelling
Duffy Theatre group and the Kids at Home preschool programme.
Maybe there’s a school near you that is in need of a
sponsor – for just $13.40 per child, per year, you
can help give the gift of reading to an entire community.
If you see a school that you would like to get involved
with then please contact us on 0800 383 392
or email duffy@booksinhomes.org.nz. If that school
is already taken then we’d be happy to help out
with other options.
Thank you so much for this beautiful book
‘Sanctuary’ received from Park Estate School,
Papakura. I am one of the volunteers doing
reading assistance and it is my pleasure to work
with such an enthusiastic group of children.
Congratulations on the success of Duffy Books in
Homes giving much needed encouragement to
these young children.
In appreciation of your kind thought and gift.
Seasons Greetings to you all
Hi Vanessa
At GE we had a second hand book sale (books
donated by staff and purchased by staff) this is
inline with the book theme. The staff are aware
the money is used to support the schools we
sponsor through Duffy.
The trips are not only a community and
environmental awareness event but also
educational, catering for 30 students and teachers
and 15 GE staff who volunteers to supervise on
the day. The day is wrapped up with a shared
BBQ. There is no cost to the school as the money
we raise pays for the bus and BBQ.
We have had two very successful excursions with
GIen Innes Primary and St Josephs. One teacher
said it was the best trip she had ever been on!
We will again run book sales at work and use the
money to fund trips for 2010.
Thanks
Dear Thom
I appreciate what you said and trying to
inspire us to read. I really think it got through
to me for the first time. I also enjoyed the
tricks and moves you could do, they also
were pretty cool. But now you have got
through to me and told us how far you’ve
come and everyone knows it wouldn’t have
happened if you didn’t know how to read.
So I say again THANK YOU.
Yours sincerely
