The cardan-style universal joint (conceived in the late
thirteenth century) has been the workhorse universal
coupling for so long, its drawbacks are often overlooked.
The fact is, a traditional U-joint’s angle range is severely
limited. As its working angle goes up, its torque capacity,
speed capability and reliability decrease dramatically.
Vibration is sometimes a problem. And failure due to
inadequate lubrication is all too common.
Traditional constant velocity joints have their problems
too. Like the cardan U-joint, their angle range is also
limited. Inherent complexity makes them expensive. And
when their protective boots fail, lost lubricant means that a
