• Opponents shooting less than 50 percent - Opponents have not shot 50 percent or
more from the field in 96 consecutive games.
The last time an opponent shot 50 percent or better came in the sixth game of the 2010-11
season when South Plains shot right at 50 percent (23 of 46) from the field. That’s the only
time in the John Ontjes era that an opponent has shot 50 percent.
Before that, the Lady Dragons went 117 straight games without allowing a team to shoot
50 percent or better.
• Non-Conference regular-season streak - With its 81-52 victory over Neosho County
on Jan. 2, the Lady Dragons have reeled off 35-straight non-conference victories dating back
to a 69-63 loss to South Plains on Nov. 20, 2010.
2012-13 Lady Dragon Basketball Game Notes

HEAD COACH JOHN ONTJES
Former Blue Dragon basketball great John
Ontjes became the Hutchinson Community College
women’s basketball program’s sixth head coach on
Aug. 9, 2007.
In just his second season, Ontjes led the Lady
Dragons to their first Region VI championship in 32
years. Two years later, HCC won its first Jayhawk
West crown in 31 years.
Then came 2011-12 … an
unprecedented season in Lady
Dragon Basketball history. HCC
had an undefeated Jayhawk
West championship, a Region
VI crown and the best finish in
team history, finishing as the
2012 NJCAA national runnerup.
Ontjes has been named the
Jayhawk West Coach of the
Year and the Kansas Basketball
Coaches Association Coach of
the Year twice each (2009, 2012).
Ontjes, now in his sixth season, has a 181-23
career record at Hutchinson. Ontjes reached 100
wins (119 games) faster than any previous HCC
coach. He posted
the second-most
wins (40) in his
first 50 games as
HCC women’s
coach. He was
also the second
fastest to 50 wins
(62 games).
Ontjes enters
the 2012-13
season ranked
third in HCC
coaching
victories – Tom
Worthing has
231 and Rob
Edmission has
199.
HCC has posted its only three 30-win seasons
under Ontjes, winning 31 in 2009, 30 in 2011 and
a team-record 36 in the national runner-up season
of 2012. In each of the past two seasons, Ontjes’
teams have also set team scoring records.
Ontjes has made the Lady Dragon program a
stepping stone to Division I. Ontjes has helped
several players springboard to the next level. Ontjes
has now has seven Division I signees and 17 overall
four-year signees in his first five seasons.
LADY DRAGON ASSISTANT COACHES
Lady Dragons in the NJCAA National Poll
After winning eight-straight games since the
season’s first loss on Feb. 6, the Lady Dragons
stayed at No. 3 in this week’s NJCAA Division I
Women’s Basketball poll for the fourth-straight
week.
HCC’s first-ever No. 1 ranking lasted five
weeks, but came to an end with a 64-62 overtime
loss at Garden City. The Lady Dragons
had won seven consecutive games as the No. 1
team in the nation.
The Lady Dragons became the first Jayhawk
Conference Division I team to be ranked No.
1 since Seward County opened the 2007-08
poll as the nation’s top team. HCC is the first
Jayhawk Conference team to be ranked No.
1 during a regular-season poll since Cloud
County held the top spot for three weeks in the 2006-07 season.
The No. 1 ranking is the highest mark ever achieved by the Lady Dragons, surpassing the
No. 2 ranking reached this season and matched by an eight-week run at No. 2 during last
seasons’ 36-1 national runner-up season.
HCC has been a part of the NJCAA poll for 50-straight and 60 of the last 62 polls. The
Lady Dragons have been in the nation’s Top 10 for 32 consecutive polls.
Ontjes now third on HCC
coaching wins list
Five of HCC’s six women’s basketball coaches
have been at the post for at least 146 games. That
means it’s tough to quickly move up the program’s
coaching charts.
Sixth-year head coach John Ontjes is doing just
that, now ranking third on the coaching wins’ list
with 181 victories.
Ontjes trails Tom Worthing (1982-93) who had
225 victories and Rob Edmisson (1993-2002), who
has 192 wins. Ontjes’ 88.7 winning percentage
ranks first among HCC’s six head coaches.
He has coached in 203 games, third most in team
history. Tom Worthing holds the record with 341 games coached.
Hutchinson became the first school in NJCAA Division I basketball history to have both
its men’s and women’s teams hold the No. 1 ranking in their respective polls at the same time,
according to the NJCAA.
The HCC women earn its first No. 1 ranking in team history on Jan. 9 after former No. 1
North Idaho lost. One week later, the Blue Dragons moved to the top run of the men’s poll
after former No. 1 Chipola lost.
Division I has had a couple of close calls to the same school holding both No. 1 spots.
In 2005, Western Nebraska had its men’s team and women’s teams ranked No. 1 within one
week of each other being No. 1. In 1990, the Connors State women were ranked No. 1 and its
men’s team was No. 2 for several weeks, but both never reached No. 1 at the same time.
23-game winning streak was program’s 3rd longest
Hutchinson’s 23-game winning streak wound up being the third-longest winning streak in
team history. Garden City ended HCC’s winning streak on Feb. 6, defeating the Lady Dragons
64-62 in overtime in Garden City.
HCC’s latest extending winning streak became
the third in team history to reach a minimum of 20
games in duration.
The longest winning streak in team history is 36,
set by last season’s NJCAA national runner-up team
who started the season 36-0 before losing in the
national championship game.
The second-longest streak in team history was
also snapped in the NJCAA Tournament. The 1976-
77 Lady Dragons reeled off 26-consecutive wins
before falling in the national semifinals.
Three other long winning streaks came to an end on Jan. 6:
• Regular-season streak - The Lady Dragons had their 64-game regular-season wining
streak snapped. The last regular-season loss came on Jan. 15, 2011 at El Dorado, a 55-51 loss
at Butler. HCC went 753 days between regular-season losses.
• Jayhawk West regular-season streak - That streak ended at 37 consecutive games.
• Road regular-season streak - That streak came to an end at 19 consecutive victories.
2012-13 Lady Dragons off to third best start ever
Garden City’s 64-62 overtime victory on Feb. 6
also put an end to the third-best winning streak to
start a season.
Last year’s NJCAA national runner-up team
holds the record by winning its first 36 games
before dropping the national championship game.
The 1976-77 Lady Dragons, which finished
fourth in the NJCAA Tournament, started that season with 24-straight wins before losing
the final two games of the national tournament.
HCC’s women have had 11 starts to seasons of at least 10-0.
