BROWNE: A large number of kids came here from out of that program.<br />
COHEN: They did?<br />
BROWNE: Yes. [Tape Ends]<br />

COHEN: When was this?<br />
BROWNE: It seemed to me that I started teaching a class in 1978 maybe, or something like that—<br />
maybe ’80.<br />
COHEN: Well, I have here that you taught philosophy of education in February, 1972.<br />
BROWNE: Well, that’s right. That’s when it started. So that’s how long it was. I had forgotten.<br />
COHEN: OK. You had fourteen students, and you had them design a model school.<br />
BROWNE: That’s right.<br />
COHEN: OK. And then I also have a very nice picture of you and Bob Walker running a summer<br />
course for entering freshmen.<br />
BROWNE: Freshmen, yes, yes.<br />
COHEN: So they asked you to do that, too.<br />
BROWNE: Yes. I used to go out to the freshman camp on Catalina. But this was prior to that.<br />
We would get some kids together who had an interest in <strong>Caltech</strong> and we would talk to them<br />
about what it is you can do here. We’d ask, “What is it you want to do?” A kid might say,<br />
“Well, I want to be an engineer.” So we’d say, “Well, have you really thought about what<br />
